... to the "Blu Ray & Home Theater Discussion" section.
DVD's are no longer "hot" or "cool". Just a thought. |

Why not just to "Home Theater and Video Discussion"
That covers everything. |

How about "Home Theater Discussion"? That covers the bases. I think it is fine now, though.

Me too.
I don't have a blu-ray player, no-one else I know has one either (plenty of PS3s I suppose). |

Boobs. Lots and lots of boobs.
Seriously, I would like to see maybe a thread where people review their HDTVs and so forth - maybe somewhat comparing them with other things they've owned and maybe talking about pros and cons of their TVs. I just bought an HDTV and along with all the stuff I love about it, can also name problems I have with it. Stuff like this would be nice for schmoes to read and help them in making purchases. It would also be cool to have some sticky type of thread that explains stuff like the differences between 720i and 1080i, what refresh rates mean and how they work for you --- Basically, I'd like to see some more technical stuff in the forum similar to what you can find at AVS in addition to more subjective posts by schmoes who share their experiences with gear. I had researched for almost 2 months, everything I could learn about HDTVs before I made my own purchase, and tried to get some feedback here on the boards, and was kind of surprised at the lack of interest. It just seemed like people would be more interested in sharing their experiences, and I have no doubts that there are many schmoes here who would love to have discussions of that sort. |

You're getting twice the refresh rate with these HD models. If you want a system to handle what you want, you need all that refresh rate. See, these new TVs are high definition. You know what that means? That means it's the highest quality definition. High definition, two very important things in a TV. Now 1080i, that's kicking in over 50% more i's than your 720i model. I have that very 1080i unit in my home. But of course I got it modified with a TK-421, that kicks it up another three or four i's per channel. But that's technical talk, that doesn't really concern you. If you have any other questions, I'm here to help. |

Yeah, I don't know, I watched some old western movies on both a 720 and a 1080 and really couldn't see much difference in quality -- honestly didn't look much better than my old Zenith. |

Yeah. As a layman, the difference between HDTVs and the difference between DVD and Blu-Ray is something I can make out I guess but don't really get the big deal about generally. It's like "Oh yeah, that's a little better" rather than blow my mind improvement for me. Last edited by QUENTIN; 11-09-2009 at 05:30 AM.. |

Now I honestly don't know if you caught that I was trying to roll with the reference while keeping it in context. I can tell when I'm watching something from 720 source material. We have HD onDemand programing, plus TV stations. I still haven't gotten a Blu-Ray, and to be honest I'm not in a big hurry because it standard DVDs really do look fantastic enough to appease me for now. I can also see a difference between 120 refresh and 60, but not all the time 0 same with the 1080, it's only noticeable under certain conditions such as bright lights or certain types of pans. It's so negligible like you said though. I'm coming from starting my home entertainment as a pre-teen with a 13" CRT and a VCR that'd I'd hook up to a stereo so I could use headphones. Despite what people say, to me the best experience will always be a theater, and that goes beyond having the best possible sound and picture. I still think though, it's important to know what you are buying . I'm glad I researched my purchase because there are definitely certain things I want and don't. The only reason I jumped the gun on making my TV purchase, since I was planning on waiting after Xmas, is a found what I felt was a good deal on a unit that had everything I was looking for, and at a great price. |

My reference point is also a tiny TV and VCR that was twice my age, so DVD more than satisfies. I'll probably wait to upgrade my collection until whatever's post-BluRay comes out. Like the switch from VHS, it'll be hard to let go of because I've amassed so much. I hope DVDs don't go totally extinct for awhile. I'm with you on the theater experience. With shitty underlit projection at most megaplexes now, a good home entertainment system can probably rival it for picture quality in a lot of cases, but there's something about seeing a movie on 70' screen with an audience I cherish. Generally I'm not too tech savvy and just care about what's easily perceptible without a side-by-side comparison. I have an HDTV now that I got for a steal because it was returned to the store and if I'm watching a football game or Planet Earth it makes a difference, but for most of the stuff I watch, The Daily Show, 30 Rock, enhanced picture quality's not really a concern. I'd seen that flick recently and forgot how perfect it is. From what I understand, PT felt he should have cut a lot fo Cheadle's scenes because they seemed extraneous but he didn't because he liked the performance so much. I totally disagree with him on that one though, because I can't think of a single one of his scenes that the film could have done without. The part scene when he's talking about zodiac signs, for instance, I thought helped capture the spirit of a party. And yeah, Don was great in that movie - I also love that out of all the characters, his was the one who probably ended on the highest note. I thought he was the most likable character of the bunch. |
