Your Favorite Movie Soundtracks
Music is an essential part of quality filmmaking. It sets the mood for the scene, assists in building suspense, and it even has the power to make you jump in your seat. So who uses it best?
First of all, I am a huge fan of Quentin Tarantino's use of music in his films. I own every soundtrack to them and they are constantly playing in my car. That being said, here are my favorites. Pulp Fiction - I love just about every song on this soundtrack, particularly the old school surfing tunes played throughout. Reservoir Dogs - To me, this soundtrack defines "cool", and the excerpts from Steven Wright as the K-BILLY Super Sounds of the 70's D.J. are golden. Death Proof - Again (mostly) a great soundtrack. Tunes to kick back to. I also enjoyed select songs from both Kill Bill soundtracks. Another soundtrack I could never live without would have to be The Pick of Destiny by Tenacious D. A hilariously great soundtrack (IMO) ripped straight from the underrated (IMO) film. Sometimes I also enjoy listening to instrumental film tracks such as the 28 Weeks Later (John Murphy) and 28 Days Later (Various Artists) soundtracks, as well as the Donnie Darko score by Michael Andrews. I also enjoy the gritty, saxophone-driven sounds of the Sin City soundtrack by Robert Rodriguez and various other artists. Even some of the Planet Terror tracks I find enjoyable. And then there's the Mac-Daddy of them all - the Halloween (1978) soundtrack by John Carpenter. And lastly, for some "good-time" feels I enjoy The Big Chill soundtrack and I recently picked up the soundtrack for The Hangover which is so-so. So, what are your favorite film soundtracks? And, in your opinion, who uses music the best in their films? |

Scores and Soundtracks?
Soundtracks Goodfellas (the best one) Pulp Fiction Kill Bill O Brother Where Art Thou? The Graduate A Clockwork Orange Barry Lyndon (the music in this film is great, very moving) The Departed South Park Score The Godfather Part II (the best one) The Godfather The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (all Sergio Leone movies I guess) There Will Be Blood Lord of the Rings Taxi Driver The Assassination of Jesse James Star Wars Raiders of the Lost Ark Braveheart The Dark Knight As for who uses music the best, I find that the top three are my three favourite directors (but I guess that's just because I've seen all their movies ). Quentin Tarantino has a great knowledge of music and always seems to pick a track that perfectly fits the scene, only problem is maybe the repetition/rewinding of the soundtracks. Stanley Kubrick is similar but focuses on classical music rather than pop. Martin Scorsese is the best though, the songs he chooses not only 'fit the scene' well but can sometimes lend it a unique atmosphere that enhances the scene in a way that only he can. |

Pretty much all of Tarantino's films have awesome soundtracks, from Pulp Fiction all the way to Death Proof.
Others: Snatch - Fits the movie perfectly. The Matrix - I can't listen to Rage Against the Machine's "Wake Up" without thinking of the final scene. Singles - A fine selection of early 90s grunge and alternative rock The Crow - Again, more grunge Spawn - Don't laugh... I actually think the soundtrack is the only good thing to come out of that wretched film. Collaborations between electronica and rock/metal acts. There's a song in there featuring Prodigy and Tom Morello which sounds so awesome you can't tell when it's guitar or machine making the sounds. |

Jaws, Psycho, Lotr and the classic that is The Snowman are my favourite scores,
Just seen that new horror film Triangle though and the score's amazing in that - really builds suspense! Knew Christian Henson was pretty great but had never heard of Dot Allison before, turns out her music's really cool and she's done quite a bit of work with Pete Doherty before - http://www.myspace.com/dotallison |
