The Box - *** 1/2
A weird, very cool thriller with some really neat ideas and moral dilemmas and it all builds up to a powerful conclusion. I didn't expect much in the beginning and I was actually blown away! Richard Kelly's best movie yet. And one of the best movies of the year. Disney's A Christmas Carol - ** Third time is not the charm for director Robert Zemeckis. His third film using the motion capture stuff and it's EASILY the weakest of the three. It lacks the magic and wonder of The Polar Express and the excitement of Beowulf. The movie in general is lacking in magic. It felt very cold and emotionally distant. It was inert and lifeless and shockingly boring. It was just an overall very uninvolving and lifeless affair. A massive disappointment. |

Ichi the Killer
![]() Well. Takashi Miike definitely makes torture porn which earns that very apt - and these days a tad overused - description and makes other movies out of Hollywood labelled as such look like fucking grade school picnics. This really is a strange flick all told, and I can't rightly say whether I liked it or didn't, to be quite honest. It basically boils down to a typical gangster pic that eventually evolves into a burlesque exploration of sadomasochism and the disturbing psychology behind the need for pain and humiliation (chiefly personified by our scarred, rather colorfully-attired psychopath on the poster there), as Miike tends to do in a lot of his work, for whatever reason, making it unique among its more straightforward criminal peers. That is, if it can even technically be said to HAVE peers. Whatever my final verdict will be over time, this is a sick but undeniably original motherfucker that folks should watch just for the shock factor of its insane violence alone, if nothing else. -> 6/10 |

The Fourth Kind - ***
I have some problems with the ending, but otherwise I found this to be a fascinating, absorbing and thoroughly gripping movie with excellent performances all around. Very, very good. It reminded me of The X-Files crossed with The Mothman Prophecies. |

![]() The Blind Side - 7/10 Wow, was not expecting to enjoy it that much. Funny, moving and well-acted film that was entertaining from start to finish. This is easily one of Sandra Bullock's best performances. Quinton Aaron is also great as Big Mike, and Jae Head often provides some great comic relief. There are some cliches of course, but for the most part the movie just tells the story as is, develops its characters well and does not try to be something its not, while also not sinking to the level of eye-roll inducing convention. Good movie. |
