Nothing for me that month. As much as I love the 2 Powell & Pressburger titles, I'm not sure I'd be willing to upgrade them.

Okay this is gonna make me seem like an anal bastard but...the font bothers me in the Powell blu-rays. Not so much for the titles - it's fine when it's large - but it just looks...unprofessional in the smaller, longer lines at the top and bottom. Actually, now that I think about it, both of these covers kind of bother me in general - the photos used are fine but the layout and design seems off from their norm, closer to some of the fake Criterion covers around than a true Criterion cover. They look like slapped together jobs, done in two minutes in photoshop.

The way "A film by..." edges close to the C on the Red Shoes cover or "Black Narcissus" is touching the shaded Criterion siding...I dunno. Not digging these covers.

I like the concept of the Antichrist cover a lot - it's well-thought out and put together but I don't know if the cover fits the tone of the movie that well - it's a little too antiseptic and clean. I prefer the poster overall but I'm plenty fine with that cover too.

Aah. That makes sense - I was wondering why the C on the Darjeeling Limited cover was so much bigger.

So does anyone know how amazon.com comes by the information that Antichrist and the The Thin Red Line, etc. will be forthcoming Criterion blu-ray releases? You'd think that if they knew, then perhaps some other human being on the planet would have heard something as well. But that doesn't seem to be the case.

Ahhh, I've gone back a page and seen the clever little illustrated clues. Are these in Criterion newsletters or on the website or what?

Meant to post this earlier. Second wave of OOP Canals. I advise everyone to get Billy Liar and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Coming soon for the blu-ray section has The Thin Red Line with boxart coming soon, the page goes nowhere. Just interesting to note that Septembers releases are most likely what was previously leaked.

Plus I've also heard its just the theatrical with deleted scenes. Which is a shame considering how many people were almost begging to have a longer cut or whatever.

Either way, I'm still too poor to buy anything from CC at the moment...

Ah, can't wait for TTRL!!! Criterion has really upped their game even further lately, as far as package design goes... I can't wait to see the box art for it. Anyone else think the Stagecoach box art was one of their coolest designs yet?

Noice.

Extras are what everyone expected for TTRL, "Outtakes from the film" - They don't reveal much, so I'm nicely curious to see what's in store.

And more BOWIE!!!! AND OSHIMA! I can't believe I wasn't aware of this before, I'm a little ashamed. Sign me up. Now if they could just release Labyrinth.

There's a blog dotting about the internetz that is by the guy who designed the Stagecoach cover, it's really interesting, I think CC.org has is posted somewhere. But I agree, it's gorgeous. I love all the detail that goes into every dvd.

Merry Christmas is a definite must have. It's quietly odd, but more normal than anything else I've seen by Oshima. Think of a Kitano film (he obviously took a lot from this experience which is his first dramatic role) where the violence is toned down and the gay is ramped up. It also has the most absurd flashback since Lola Montes. Bowie fans should have a field day though. Too bad they didn't have an isolated score though, the music is probably more famous than the movie.

I managed to see it in theaters, and it was worth the hour drive. If you've seen the American movie House, just imagine that mixed with Suspiria and Looney Tunes and you'll have a vague idea of what it is. The entire film is one of the trippiest things I've ever seen. Supposedly the directors son wrote the script. The trailer is a good indicator of what you'll experience. Here's a completely awesome out of context scene.

It's been exiting on the Criterion front recently huh? Seems like their blu-ray releases must be selling well.

I nearly jizzed my pants when i read this list of Ten films (the editor) looks forward to the most to be released Criterion.

http://criterioncast.com/2010/07/16/...l-waiting-for/

For one, i had no idea that they picked up Charlie Chaplin's main filmography!

And smack dab at number one is one hell of a rumor. here's an article detailing more about 'said' rumor...

http://criterioncast.com/2010/06/02/...this-november/

A BLU-RAY BOX SET OF BOB RAFLESON/BERT SCHNIEDER 70's CLASSICS including Five Easy Pieces/ Head/ King of Marvin Gardens/ The Last Picture Show/ Easy Rider/ A Safe Place/ Drive

enough to make me old...

Do not get the Criterion release of L'enfance Nue. It is the single ugliest job I've seen from them. The MOC can be found for $14 US on their site during their monthly sales and is R0. I'm just shocked how ugly the Crit is, go see for yourselves.
