Official KILLING THEM SOFTLY (Formerly Cogan's Trade) thread (November 30, 2012)

2012 is really shaping up to be one of the best years in recent memory. Cogan's Trade is at the top of the list of films with incredible potential. Based on an acclaimed novel by George V. Higgins, it's about Jackie Cogan, a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game.

It will be written and directed by Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Chopper) and starring Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Mark Ruffalo, Sam Rockwell, Casey Affleck, Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, James Gandolfini, Vincent Curatola and Scoot McNairy. Now if that director, plot and cast doesn't get you excited, I don't know what will.

I love a movie with a great, versatile cast and this is a movie and a cast that I can't wait to see.

I'm also a huge fan of Sam Rockwell, and will see any movie that he is in.

All you needed to say was Andrew Dominik, but that cast is incredible.

I'd watch anything that Dominik makes. Not that it matters. I'd watch any film with a cast this stacked.

Hell. Yes.

Stumbled upon an interview with (the awesome) Garret Dilahunt at the A.V. Club today, and he mentioned that he'd be filming a cameo in Cogan's Trade. This was the first I'd heard of the project, so I quickly googled the title and now I am dying to see this IMMEDIATELY. I couldn't be more excited. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a masterpiece and one of last decades finest films, so I'm thrilled to hear that Andrew Dominik is helming a followup with none other than Brad Pitt. Plus, I'm a sucker for these mob/crime flicks. Subject matter + Amazing Cast + Dominik= gold, Jerry, gold.

This has moved to the top of my most anticipated films list. Cannot wait.

Agreed Hucksta, I love Ellis and Warren's score of Jesse James (it's actually 1 of the 6 cds in my car at the moment). A unique score from these guys could really add a unique element and elevate the (hopefully) already awesome material.

I was hoping to hear that Deakins was lensing this... but alas, it's not to be.

Fuuuuckkk. 1st draft of the script is ridiculous. This movie is going to be just as awesome as you'd expect. It's like the Coen bros. with a side of Tarantino. I was planning to just read the first couple of pages, but I ended up reading the whole thing in like 90 minutes.

Good to hear Bourne.

Who has the second biggest role in this?

I'm not exactly sure who is playing who, but I did hear Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn are the guys who perform the heist. They are in it quite a bit. Liotta's character isn't in it a ton, but his character is essential and has a couple of terrific scenes.

What is the hold up on this Weinstein? No trailer? No release date?

It was originally slated for March 2nd, but is now in TBA mode. They better not pull a shelve and dump like Warner Bros. did with Jesse James.

This is really exciting. The director has certainly earned his stripes in my book, and the cast is more than worth their weight on the screen. I look forward to this one. Definitely one of my most anticipated movies of 2012.
My only complaint is that most everything I'm currently looking forward to, including this, is coming out the 4th quarter of this year. Oh well, time to practice patience.

Nice pics! While I'm kinda pissed they moved it from March to the last quarter of 2012, I think that unless they are shelving it, it's a good indication that they feel like they have something on their hands with this. Maybe not Oscars, but success on the festival circuit like Drive might be possible. The script is kind of like Drive in that it is an unconventional take on the crime genre, but is still entertaining as hell. Dialogue wise it will be the polar opposite though. Pitt and the rest of the cast have a ton to chew on and there won't be many moments of silence, haha. A Cannes bow will probably happen.

And if the suggested song choices from the script end up in the movie, it'll be one of the best soundtracks in recent memory.

This was gonna get released in March?? no wonder they moved it. No trailer, no nothin' - this film bombed before the promotion would start, if they stuck to March.

It might have just been a rumor, but I remember seeing March 2nd on a few sites. The latest updates indicate 4th quarter.

The cast is great but that's about all I can judge the movie on. I can't judge based on the director because while, yes, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was great, flawed, but great, I need a few films from the same director before he goes on my list where his name is an automatic draw. One movie doesn't cut it for me.

Hopefully the trailer will deliver because I do like crime flicks and the cast is great.

Well fortunately for you the guy made two movies, maybe you should watch the other film before you don't draw a conclusion.

Haven't seen Chopper. Maybe I'll see it soon. If it's available to watch on netflix instant, I'll definitely get around to see it very soon. Otherwise, it'll be a while.

I like that James Gandolfini is in this. It's just sad to see him take up yet another mafia role. Although, I don't know for sure he plays as a mobster in this movie, but I'm assuming he does.
I feel like he got typecast because of the Sopranos.

This movie already looks solid from the stills and the fact that Andrew Dominick is directing. With that said, I couldn't help myself...
