What are the definitive Thor-Captain America-Avengers books?

Since next year we're all getting the Thor and Captain America movies and then after that the Avengers, I was thinking about getting some of the collections from my library but I wanted to know if anybody would suggest what to read. I own a couple of Captain America books and I've been reading a bit of the Ultimates. I saw a collection of origins too so I might pick that up next time but other than that I'm a bit in the dark.

The John Byrne Cap from the 80's is my favorite vintage stuff. Collects Captain America #247-255.

The modern take on Cap is the best, however. Just about anything from Ed Brubaker or the Rieber/Cassaday stuff from right after 9/11 is great.
