Past Tense
Man, it's been a while since my last 'Past Tense' - December 3rd, 2010 to be exact. I've decided to relaunch this... thing, an expanded version. A weekly installment; a look back at some old and not so old store exclusives. These are the things which I own, mostly. Back when I had more money to burn. Don't we all miss those days?
Get seated and buckle in - for this FIRST article you get two titles! This inaugural week we travel to the land of money and privilege. A place where the beautiful live. A place called "Laguna Beach"... "Laguna Beach: The Complete First Season" was released on home video on July 19th, 2005. An MTV program. It streeted against "Sliders: The Third Season", "Constantine: 2 - Disc Deluxe Edition" and "Cleopatra 2525: The Complete Series" (c'mon, you watched it too, share the shame). The release originally came with an insert. A one sheet with an ad for the "V.I.P. Surf Club" (series website with more features; photos, videos, ring tones, games and weekly previews of season two episodes). The other side is an ad for season two. - - - Best Buy offered a $10.00 off coupon. Use it to buy season one, $29.99 or other MTV season sets such as "Punk’d", "Viva La Bam" or "Newlyweds". - - - Circuit City sold the collection with an exclusive keychain for $27.99 (attached to the package). I'm not going to bother with this. - - - There was only one real exclusive worth having and it was from Target. A bonus disc in a CD envelope inside the slipcase. They also added a $5.00 gift card. The set sold for $27.99. I didn't get this at the time. In fact I didn't buy this show until a few weeks ago from Big Lots!, they were having a sale. It was a blind buy, I liked it and pursued the bonus DVD off Ebay. *nods* The disc has a run time of 13:49 minutes. - - - - - - - - - - Can you guess the second title? Why yes, the second season! "Laguna Beach: The Complete Second Season" splashed on shelves on August 8th, 2006. Still an MTV series. It streeted against "Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector", "C.S.A.: The Confederate States Of America" and "Bring It On: All Or Nothing". The release came with two inserts. The first was a mock postcard from the LB store; 20% off discount with the provided code (LB20OFF - makes me wonder if you could insert a 50 in place of that 20) - expired on September 2nd, 2006. The other side was an ad for another MTV show, "8th & Ocean: The Complete First Season" (then coming to home video); still in mock postcard theme. This also had a 20% off code (8O10OFF), expired on the same day. The second insert was a contest from Pepsi. Log in to the promotional website with the provided code and see if you won a free copy of season two, soundtrack. I don't see a CD for that. I suspect it was "Laguna Beach: Summer Last Forever" soundtrack, released on November 7th, 2006. The other side was contest rules; it ran from August 8th to September 8th, 2006. - - - Several stores had exclusives. Once again I didn't buy these when they were first released. This time out I bought them through Amazon and Ebay (twice over - my initial try had scratched DVDs). The first was from Best Buy. The bonus disc set sold for $26.99. The exclusive came in a printed cardboard sleeve attached to the back of the package. It had a run time of 95:08 minutes, very sway. The disc is pure season two extras, unlike the later entry. The ad for the store claimed the disc would have something called "MTV Overdrive Presents 'Fashion Of Laguna Beach'". Did they mean the 'Aftershow' featurette, "Laguna Style"? We may never know. - - - Circuit City sold the second season with a free skin care kit for $27.99. Lame. - - - On that same date, Target offered a more elaborate set for $27.99. This collection came with an exclusive slipcover. It was different from the box cover (Target slip, above left). The box cover is a BIT different from the regular edition, it reads "The Complete Second Season Collector's Edition". Yeah, the girl on the far left (Jessica) does have a distorted face, that's some good Photoshopping there Lou. In addition to the slipcover was a bonus disc. The extra DVD came inside a slim case (with artwork) as did the regular discs. The exclusive has 8:38 minutes of actual "Laguna Beach" content. The rest was devoted to filler (Showtime DVDs are the same; I would rather them not have unrelated stuff and a lower price). As a whole, the bonus is 91:37 minutes long. Completing the collection is a twenty-four page photo booklet (which I forgot to scan), sorry. Various images of the cast lounging about the beach, a hot tub and the surf shop. The Target box is thicker to accommodate the additional extras. - - - Suncoast/F.Y.E had one of their own, a bonus disc. I don't own this, but it's on my list. Price? Sorry, I do not know. I found, much like the above - years after the fact. I think I can find it, but this will take some time. The disc has a single item, "Going Home With..." from MTV Overdrive. - - - This is even more rarer, a bonus disc from MTV Shop, online I'm guessing. The bonus has "Highlights From The After Show". I'll be honest, I don't think I will ever find this, definitely 'first come, first serve' kind of deal. Retail price? That info is lost to the internet Gods. - - - - - - - - - - Footnotes. Season three is available from Amazon as a MOD (Manufactured On Demand), an official DVD-R set with no extras (and no opening credits). But non-region one releases such as the United Kingdom and Australia received full box sets complete with bonus features. Season three was to have an official U.S. release for July 24th, 2007, but it never happened - at least not in the States. Paramount Home Entertainment for whatever reason pulled the plug, too bad. Oh yeah, NONE of these seasons have air dates, there are episode guides, but no dates. Why is that? There you go, hope to see you next Thursday. And the weeks to come. - - - December 28th, 2012: What you see here is a re-working; conforming to later 'Past Tense' structures. January 4th, 2013: Added additional exclusives. But remember, Mel Gibson has had his hand in it so it might be more sober than want. You could DO a double viewing, Jodie's "Beaver" with Wallace & Gromit's "A Close Shave". I am most certain she would like that, Ms. Foster seems like a woman who appreciates smooth animation. Or you could view it with season one of "Hung". But I'm uncertain how that would come together. As for stuff... the only thing I want - wasn't listed, "The Event: The Complete Series". Looking online, Best Buy will sell it for $39.99. |

Past Tense
This week we get all spied-up and become morally ambiguous with "MTV's Ĉon Flux"...
"MTV's Ĉon Flux: The Complete Animated Collection" was released on home video on November 22nd, 2005. It streeted against "Alien Vs. Predator: The Unrated Edition", "King Kong: Two-Disc Collector's Edition" (1933) and "War Of The Worlds: Widescreen Two-Disc Limited Edition" (2005). This release originally came with an embossed cardboard foil slipcover. The three disc came inside digipacks, each. There was one insert. Side A was a production note from series creator Peter Chung. It detailed the changes made for the remastering; select dialog re-recorded by stars (voice actors Denise Poirier and John Lee) for better series continuity, voice replacement for the character Clavius (it's now Bruce Willis, uncredited) and CGI elements added for shadows, blurs and various glows. As well as timing errors corrected among other revisions. The other side featured ads for various MTV products; "Ĉon Flux: The Game", "Ĉon Flux: The Herodotus File" book, "Jackass: The Box Set" and "Beavis And Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection - Volume 1". - - - There were two exclusives, plus one. Lets address this alphabetically... Former retail giant Circuit City sold the box set on release day for $27.99; it came with a bonus DVD. A sampler disc (in a CD envelope) showcasing select shorts from the MTV series that it originated from - "Liquid Television" (1991 - 1994). The shorts (totaling 17:20 minutes); "Uncle Louie's Date", "I Am Normal", "Genie Junkie", "The Block Heads", "Winter Steele" ("Ball Of Communion" episode), "Fred Dharma: Psychedelic Detective" and various tiny bits. There was no menu screen, it just plays. This offering was limited to five per store. I'm lucky to have mine. Best Buy had their own exclusive, a CD sampler of the score (in a printed cardboard sleeve); sold for $26.99. This sampler is the ONLY official soundtrack to the series. The eighteen track disc features seven sound bytes from the show. I'll get into that story in a few. Months after the "Complete Animated Collection" release, Wal-Mart had a bonus DVD for the then streeted "Ĉon Flux" live action film, April 25th, 2006. It was a sampler for complete series (twenty-three minutes total), three of the shorts from the "Liquid Television" days and the trailer for the box set. This exclusive set retailed for $19.49. This bonus disc came in a standard DVD case with artwork, but was only available with the Full Screen editions of the movie. A somewhat common practice by the store at the time. I bought mine, kept the bonus and sold the copy on Ebay. As of writing, this can still be bought from Wal-Mart online, but now for forty-seven cents more. - - - - - - - - - - Footnotes. In 1997 composer, Drew Neumann wanted to release series music for anime fans. He asked permission from the show's architect, Peter Chung. He said yes, then Neumann got cock blocked - MTV. The record label, Tone Casualties (now defunct) would be sued if they used the name or image of "Ĉon Flux". Not detoured, Neumann released an unofficial soundtrack, under a different name. The two disc CD set was re-named "Eye Spy - Ears Only: Confidential" with a cover art done by none other than artist/creator Chung. It mimics the iconic "Ĉon Flux" image of a fly caught in the eye. Because of the name change and different artwork, many fans failed to know about it. The limited pressed soundtrack soon sold out and became a sought after collector's item to those in the know. I failed to get my copy. Quote:
That game (from Cryo Interactive) was eventually aborted. And that's where the music could've ended. But very much like the titular character, it rose to fight another day. More than a decade later due to popular demand the score shot up ears again. In 2010 Neumann re-released the soundtrack - remastered and expanded (two to eight minutes longer on select tracks). But the old rules still applied. This too would not be named "Ĉon Flux". Unsure if there was enough demand for physical copies (costly to produce), this endeavor was pure digital - 320 bit MP3s (from the 24 bit masters). The compressed document is huge, close to 400mb. I had to buy and download at a friend's house (he has broadband), I'm on dial-up. For obvious reasons I'm not going to list the website nor download price (through PayPal). You should be able to find it on your own, it's not that hard. Virtual disc one has three expanded tracks, disc two has four of them. Exclusive through Neumann is a third virtual named, "Volume 3 Declassified - Freedom Of Information Act". This contains additional music from the series as well as music from the early non-speaking shorts. It also features the expanded score from the episode "Chronophasia" (aired September 19th, 1995). - - - Quote:
Something I was unaware of until researching this post. Plans were afoot in 2008 to do a direct to video feature, a sequel to the series (animated). But Paramount lost interest in the property and passed. Too bad, that would've rocked. It also should be noted that most of the episodes in the box set are longer than when it originally aired. Some alternate takes were found and included. That and the series, minus the shorts which aired on "Liquid Television" is only ten episodes long, but is still fondly remembered. - - - - - - - - - - Tangent. Since we've talked about it a moment ago. I should continue to say some additional words - the "Ĉon Flux" movie (2005). I bought the DVD on street (April 25th), didn't see it at the theaters. It was okay. It has grown on me these past years. The screenplay by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi is inventive, but seriously should NOT be called "Ĉon Flux". As you can see from the top of this PT, that's the iconic costume worn by Ĉon. Granted for actress Charlize Theron, she doesn't have the attributes to fill out that outfit (that's not a knock on her, she's an attractive woman). In the same way you don't cast Natalie Portman as a live action Jessica Rabbit. She's not for that role. Above you see the costume used for the character, it's not even close to the series outfit. Then you have Trevor Goodchild played by Marton Csokas, he's not the charismatic amoralist you've come to know from the series. He's played like a stereotypical bad guy. *sigh* The very same thing happened to "Resident Evil" (2002). The film is so removed from the original concept, it's in name only. If they wanted to do a real adaptation they should've just gone with the game novelization by S.D. Perry (published in 1998 by Pocket Books). It took the video game, that's not so linear and made it a sequential story - pretty damn good too. Hell, there are seven books ("The Umbrella Conspiracy" 1998, "Caliban Cove" 1998, "City Of The Dead" 1999, "Underworld" 1999, "Nemesis" 2000, "Code Veronica" 2001 and "Zero Hour" 2004) by her (Stephani Danelle; S.D.) that could be turned into movies, faithful motion pictures. Anyhow, the Paul W.S. Anderson, written/directed feature has definitely grown on me - one of my favorites and I do enjoy the "Resident Evil" franchise for what it is (I own all the DVDs). But just like "Ĉon Flux" it should not have that moniker, give it a different name. - - - On August 31st, 2004 Theron was injured on set; she was performing her own stunt. She hurt her neck from a trampoline accident. Production has halted for a month and on September 30th, "Ĉon Flux" resumed filming. The above image is Ms. Theron in her neck brace, then recovering. When filming restarted, she continued to do her own stunts. I'm impressed, good girl. Man, I would've hated to have seen Demi Moore as Ĉon (not a fan of hers), she was offered the role - though I can see Michelle Rodriguez in the part. She almost had the role. She could fit into that costume. - - - October 27th, 2012: What you see here is a re-working; conforming to later 'Past Tense' structures with added images. November 21st, 2012: Added info/images from the 2005 motion picture. Last edited by JohnIan; 12-21-2012 at 01:45 AM.. |

Past Tense
This week we gather all available supplies and hope to go undiscovered in "Dawn Of The Dead"...
The motion picture opened on March 19th, 2004. It was made with a budget of $28,000,000 (estimated) and grossed over $59 million during its U.S. theatrical run. The feature opened against "The Passion Of The Christ", "Hidalgo", "Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen" and "Starsky And Hutch". I'm going to be covering the "Unrated Director's Cut". This release originally came with an embossed cardboard slipcover which mirrored the case's wraparound. It also came with an insert, not a chapter listing, but advertisement. One side an ad for "The Chucky Collection", the other side - various Universal horror themed releases ("Funhouse", "Ghost Story", "Legacy", "The Sentinel" and "Sssssss"). - - - The now dead Circuit City sold the movie on release day, October 26th, 2004 for $15.99. The store offered a mini eighteen page, limited edition comic; slightly smaller than a DVD case (I have mine under the slipcover). It retold the opening, up to where the surviors go to the mall. It was a sampler, part of a bigger Mig. Biz official comic book adapation. I was unaware of this exclusive until a week after its release. I was lucky my store still had a couple copies. Now, damn impossible to find. Best Buy had their own that date, a bonus disc (13:47 minutes). It retailed for $15.99 too. The DVD case for that exclusive was a two discer - though there were reports that some found the bonus disc inside a single disc case, the extra DVD within a CD envelope. The bigger story that day was the difficulty finding a copy that HAD a bonus disc. While common now, back in the day most didn't notice a tiny sticker indicating that this particular copy was the exclusive (it was assumed all the copies sold that day had it). This goes for myself as well. I found mine by weight; had two copies, one in each hand - which was heavier? I remember customers asking store staff for help. And there was that moment looking at the mess, thinking to myself, I'm not going to get one. These were the days if a title had a bonus disc it was attached on the back of the DVD case or completely separate on a cardboard rack (next to the new releases table). Future Shop in Canada (which is a sister store of Best Buy; the same company owns both) sold it with an exclusive steelbook case. I do not know if it came with the bonus disc - nor can I tell you the price. Sorry. - - - - - - - - - - Footnotes. Above is the unrated DVD cover, 'Bonus Features' menu and sub-menu. Above here is the rated DVD (widescreen) cover and its 'Bonus Features' menu. As you can see there is a featurette that is exclusive to the R-rated edition, "Surviving The Dawn" (23:30 minutes). If fans want the complete remake experience - you have to own both versions. Not to mention the main menus for both versions are different (news reports and zombie apocalypse), plus the unrated edition has an unlisted extra (not mentioned on the back of the DVD case), an introduction by director Zack Snyder. For my use, I ended up finding a transparent three disc case, all the DVDs are inside - the unrated wraparound is on the front with the R rated wraparound seen on the inside. Pretty sway. - - - I almost forgot about this. What you see above is the Japanese poster. In the United Kingdom before the movie came out, there were numerous complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority. Why? That poster (same image, just in English) was too scary and it frightened lots of little kids who walked by the ad. Times have changed, that kind of thing just doesn't happen nowadays.
