Some more HOBBIT casting news today. As we near the end of our first shooting block (we have a break in less than three weeks to get some editing and visual effects work done, plus prepare for very big scenes coming up), we are looking at characters featuring in sequences that take place a little later in the story.

We are thrilled to confirm that Stephen Fry will be playing The Master of Laketown. I’ve known Stephen for several years, and we’re developing a DAMBUSTERS movie together. In addition to his writing skills, he’s a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us.

The Master’s conniving civil servant, Alfrid will be played by Ryan Gage. Ryan is a great young actor who we originally cast in a small role, but we liked him so much, we promoted him to the much larger Alfrid part.

I'm not sure if its the same guy, but I seem to distinctly recall that Stephen Fry, along with Hugh Laurie, was part of the BBC dramatization of the Wooster and Jeeves cannon, as written by PG Wodehouse, many years back. I love those stories, and I've read nearly every one of them. I thought Fry was fabulous in those films, and have perked up whenever his name is mentioned with a part ever since.

I am in love with Fry. From his role in Bones to voicing Hitchhikers Guide the Galaxy, he has never let me down. It saddens me to think how underutilized he is in hollywood, but having him in The Hobbit is great. it's a very different role than he normally plays, but I have the utmost confidence.

It is indeed the same Stephen Fry. As a side note, it always tickles me to be reminded of Hugh Laurie's work from Britain because if all one knows him for is House, one would never know he was British.

Glad to see the cast shaping up so nicely for this.

These movies are quickly moving up my list of most anticipated films. I'm glad to see that Jackson is again assembling a great cast, and I don't really have any concern over these films feeling anti-climatic (being that they happen before the Lord of the Rings) like some of my friends seem to. Regardless, really excited for this one.

I think its the picture myself. I believe it's the same color as the FOTR.

Well, the folks in NZ are getting back to work on the Hobbit. I certainly hope we get some type of little preview theatrically this December. Anyone heard anything about a small teaser trailer coming around Christmas time? It would only make sense.

Or is it just wishful thinking on my part?

I actually think he looks better with a bit of pudge. I am about as vain as you can get in terms of my own appearance, but there are definitely some people who look better with some bulk. His body by auschwitz look wasn't working.

IMDb lists Howard Shore as composer, which is a bit of a relief. Apparently he and Jackson couldn't see eye-to-eye on the King Kong score, and then Brian Eno scored The Lovely Bones.

But not getting Shore back to work on the Hobbit films would be a mistake in my opinion, so I hope it's official news. Shore's work on LOTR is one of the defining parts of those films for me, it just wouldn't be right not to have him back.

Yeah, one of the many things that made LOTR that great was this composer. The layers in that score are incredible, and making the Hobbit without him seems wrong.

That latest blog is fantastic...but when is the teaser coming out? It's 2012 right? So on LOTR they had a very early trailer for FOTR, but for TTT and ROTK they had not so many. I hope with one of the December-releases but it could also be in Blockbuster-season starting in May and a full trailer in September/Oktober.

If I was a marketeer, I would hold. This movie is gonna sell itself, the name and fame of the LOTR-movies is that big. Wait until May for a teaser, and a full trailer in Oktober/November and when that trailer airs start a big push. But I would love to see a teaser earlier of course...
