I think this looks awesome. I love the art design. As of now, it's my most anticipated movie of 2012.

Doesn't look all that great. But William Dafoe is playing an alien in this so thats a plus.
And wow, studios are really putting a huge investment into this Taylor Kitsch dude. With John Carter at a budget of an estimated 250 million and Battleship with a budget of about 200 million, a lot of shit is riding on this kid. ![]() |

Yeah, it doesn't make any sense why they would invest so much. I imagine both of them will bomb. Battleship has a better chance at succeeding, but I can't see these movies holding up over a long period of time. As suggested by mediocre grosses for several big budget movies this year, people are getting tired of amazing special effects combined with terrible scripts. Even Transformers, which was one of the higher grossing movies of the year, came well short of matching its predecessor. Maybe you can blame the box-office slump, but the lack of quality is also most certainly a factor. That is why The Dark Knight Rises is likely going to wipe the floor with every other film this year at the box-office. Nolan puts a ton of time into his screenplays, instead of just churning out a quick draft and throwing $200 million dollars at it. As a result people come back for repeat viewings, which bumps up the gross. I doubt people will be running out for repeat viewings of John Carter or Battleship.

I actually think this has a lot of potential. The quality is right there with the books. Andrew Stanton tackling this has me really looking forward to it. Let's see if he makes the jump to live action as well as Brad Bird did.

I don't see this doing well at all. The only thing it has honestly got going for it is its release date.

I think it looks like a solidly entertaining fantasy film. It won't come close to The Hobbit but it'll be highly enjoyable I think.

I only saw one tv spot for 15 secs. I might be totally wrong and for the record, I hope all films are great. Gladiator meets 2D Star WARS Episode 1 meets Avatar meets Braveheart.
PS I saw a print ad saying Episode 1 on 3d this 2012. Fuck Lucas. I won't see it. Last edited by Erroneous; 01-01-2012 at 08:22 PM.. |

I'm not entirely sold on this . . . it looks like Braveheart meets Attack of the Clones. Gonna wait and see on this one.

This. I just cannot get excited for it at all, the visuals look pretty well done but the trailer just came off as super cheesy the two times ive seen it and while it may just be that they had to compress the description of the storyline for the trailer, I get a feeling this is going to be a mess plot wise. I also have a weird feeling this may end up being one of Disney's biggest bombs given how ridiculous the budget for it apparently is.
Hey, if it ends up being good im there, because i LOVE good sci -fi. if its bad? then i wont even be bummed, thats the beauty of having 0 expectations. Haha |

It kinda looks like The Prince of Persia in space or a sci-fi version of it, can't make up my mind really, also brings Star Wars: Attack of the Clones into my head...Geonosis and the semi-insectoid Geonosians.

This is something that I keep hearing lots of anticipation online about and I don't get it. The comparisons to Prince of Persia and Attack of the Clones sound pretty accurate to me. Every other movie I see in the theaters has a trailer for this and no one including myself in the theater are impressed by it and the Disney name on it seems to turn a lot of people off. Will definitely wait on word of mouth for this one.

I'm still hesitant about this movie. I haven't been overly impressed by what's been shown so far. It looks very generic. It seems like a mesh of every thing that we have already seen. I just don't see it standing out very much at all. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the visuals look a lot like Attack of the Clones. Plus I'm not sold on Taylor Kitsch. It just really seems like he's being pushed down our throats. I must say this does look better than Battleship which I know for damn sure I'm not seeing. I think it has a lot of potential especially with Andrew Stanton behind the camera. It is also hard for me to pass up on a movie that has Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, and Ciaran Hinds.

I think this movie could end up being pretty good, I am at least looking forward to it as I love these types of movies. I do agree the marketing hasn't been the best, but I at least thought the super bowl spot was decent.

"John Carter" May Become Biggest Flop of 2012
Deadline has learned that Disney's upcoming "John Carter" film is tracking very poorly, with the majority still unaware that the movie even exists. In the end, "John Carter" may be the first big flop of 2012. "It just came out. Women of all ages have flat out rejected the film," said a senior executive at a rival studio. "The tracking for 'John Carter' is shocking for a film that cost over $250 million. This could be the biggest write-off of all time." This doesn't come as much of a surprise to Disney, which has been expecting lousy numbers for their massive film. The studio is nervous that it will lose a significant amount of money, but is hoping that everything will work out. "We know that we have a long way to go," said Disney. "It's still four weeks out, and the bulk of the media hasn't hit yet. Our Super Bowl ad did what we intended it to do: have a pop of awareness. On Sunday we launch a full campaign with 90+% of all of our media ready to go." Question: Do you plan to see "John Carter" in theaters? Source: Deadline |

I'm not surprised, to be honest. Every TV spot that I see does nothing to distinguish itself as something more to the film. It feels like a Pirates of the Caribbean meets Attack of the Clones CGI landscape. I know a well known Pixar director is helming it, but I'm still hesistant on how it will all play out in the end.

I cant believe they cast such an "unknown" in the lead for a film of that budget....

Kitsch not being widely-known is the least of this film's problems. They should have cut a more dramatic and adventuresome trailer and the lead wouldn't matter at all. Sam Worthington was about as unknown if not more so than Kitsch. This "put a big star in a film to make money" idea is based on a correlation between large grosses and A-list. It is not necessary, given other factors, like a reason to see the film inherent in the film's quality.
The problem lies entirely with the marketing (if the film is indeed very good) as the trailers make it appear to be a cross between Prince of Persia and Attack of the Clones, with a hint of Avatar - not a winning combination. |

Interesting article from IFC about the film:
http://www.ifc.com/fix/2012/02/the-m...want-to-see-it And 2 from the Hollywood Reporter: This one points to Disney's scramble to pick up marketing on the film: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...-office-294822 This one talks about the film's premiere and positive early buzz from screenings: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hea...stanton-294691 All I can say is the film seems to be getting a heck of a lot of media coverage, which is only a good thing. |

John Carter surely will be this decade's Cutthroat Island. Already a Disney dark horse like Condorman. I guess nobody remember that film.
![]() Disney should stop greenlighting mega expensive productions and stick to animation. |

Same here, I've heard more positive reviews than negative. I imagine that the film will be good, it's the marketing that is failing.

This is crazy. Now we are declaring flops before they even come out. But if it does flop, Disney bears the blame. I haven't seen a single trailer in theaters and the TV spots are terrible. Not to mention that the title is a bit bland and that calling it John Carter of Mars might have been better in the end.
I think it looks great. I read an article in Wired about it earlier today that has me excited for it, but I also wonder if it might have been better off as a straight up animated Pixar movie. Two people! |
