I didn't love Tree Of Life, but it's definitely an ambitious film from Malick and I'd say it will be seen as a classic down the line. It actually wouldn't surprise me if it showed up on other critic's lists.

I'm excited too. I'm curious to see the top 10 lists of newer directors who came on the scene this past decade.
Not only did Tree of Life not make the #1 spot, it didn't make the #2 spot either. But my understanding from following Ebert over the years is that he has an incredible tendency to significantly revise his opinion after more viewings. Also worth mentioning is that he said Tree of Life or Synecdoche, New York could fit into that spot.

Anyway, I was wondering -- does anyone know which of the new directors have already given top ten lists? It seems like the most interesting new directors would probably be: Ramin Bahrani, DGG, Jeff Nichols, Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck, and Rian Johnson. The only one of those guys who I have seen a top 10 list from is Rian Johnson

I'm using this summer with the Sight & Sound poll to really reevaluate this question. Until this summer I hadn't really done any best of polls for a few years. Glad to see everyone else is getting into the mood, and this seemingly random best-of thread is suddenly getting a ton of posts.

I like your list, it's very different. None of that usual "The Godfather" and "Citizen Kane" bullshit. I like your thinking :-)

I'm so God damned glad someone else makes that distinction.

Also, you should check out Blue Velvet. It's huge among MFAs, Film Critics, Literary Critics, &c. I actually think it's one of the ten most written about films in scholarly literature. It is especially huge among European pomo philosophers who consider it one of the great examples of pomo aestheticism.

I've been meaning to watch it. And yeah, I mean I totally see the distinction, like my top 20 favorites would have films like The Big Lebowski, American Beauty, and Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but I wouldn't call those the greatest films ever. For me, they have to be bold, daring, influential, and of course they have to be really freaking good.
