Maybe not in terms of gameplay, but will it have better graphics, story, characters, etc.? You bet. It'll also have much more replayability and appeal to me as a gamer. Saints Row the 3rd is lots of fun until you realize that you're simply causing chaos for the sake of causing chaos. I understand that is the entire purpose of that franchise, but I need a strong story and backbone to keep pushing me through a game. Saints Row just doesn't have that.

Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V Coming Spring 2013; Pre-orders active 11/5/12

Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., announced today that Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch worldwide during spring 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V is the largest and most ambitious title in the series to date. Set in the sprawling city of Los Santos and the surrounding area, Grand Theft Auto V delivers a world of unprecedented scale and detail bursting with life, from mountaintops to the depths of the ocean.

"'Grand Theft Auto V' builds on everything we've learned about open world game design," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "We canít wait to share it with fans."

Beginning November 5, 2012, Grand Theft Auto V will be available for pre-order in stores everywhere.

GTA fans, the time has come.

Game Informer has blown the lid off of Grand Theft Auto 5, revealing a tonne of previously unknown details about Rockstar's hugely anticipated crime game.

We know you're desperate to learn the facts, so while we type up something in more detail, we thought we'd summarise everything there is to know from Game Informer's preview in the list below.

GTA 5 "evolves nearly every mechanic" found in previous games in the series.
Features the biggest open world in the series' history - GTA 5's world is bigger than the worlds of Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas and GTA IV combined.
Three playable characters who you can switch between "at nearly any time".
Each character has their own specific abilities and story arc, with all three stories intertwined.
Camera zooms out to a "Google Earth-style" perspective when switching characters.
Character 1 - Michael, an ex-bank robber in his early 40s who retired after making a deal with the FIB. He has two teenage children and hates his wife Amanda. He's also the narrator of the original GTA 5 trailer.
Character 2 - Trevor, a former war veteran and a "drugged out psychopath". An experienced pilot.
Character 3 - Franklin, a repo man in his mid 20s described as a "young and ambitious hustler".
Certain characters from GTA IV and Episodes From Liberty City will also make an appearance. Rockstar's Dan Houser says we'll never see characters from the PS2 era, though. "The five PS2 games are one universe, and this is the high definition universe, so they don't co-exist," he says.
No major actors cast as any of the main characters.
Focus on making more diverse missions.
Heists and bank robberies are a big theme to the game.
Characters will work together during missions, and you can switch between characters mid-mission to fulfill different roles. For example, during a chase sequence you can pilot the getaway helicopter as Trevor, snipe pursuing pilots as Franklin, or fire an assault rifle as Michael.
Missions will have a "very different tone depending on who's on them, how many people are on them, and how much we're using switches", says Houser.
Even when you're not controlling them, each character will still go about their own business across Los Santos. "You may be surprised by the situations they find themselves in should you switch back to check up on them," says Game Informer.
Big advances to lighting and shader model. Greater draw distance.
Improved vehicle handling and physics - "The cars hold to the ground better... It feels more like a racing game," Houser says.
More vehicles than in any GTA to date, including BMXs, mountain bikes, road bikes, dirt bikes, cars, trucks, helicopters, planes, ATVs and Jet Skis, but vehicle manufacturers are still fictional.
Fighter jets appear to be in. One screenshot shows a fighter equipped with missiles, as a helicopter explodes in the background.
Improved shooting and melee combat. Melee combat "never going to be as big a deal as shooting," though, warns Houser.
Pedestrians are fully mo-capped and more interactive.
You can rappel down buildings, although it's not confirmed whether this is specific to certain missions.
Los Santos is described as a "huge and diverse city", combining the best of Red Dead Redemption's "large open expanses" with GTA IV's "densely packed urban environment".
Areas in the game world include beachfronts, mountains, the wilderness, a "Salton Sea" region, a military base and the suburbs.
GTA: San Andreas was about gang culture. GTA 5 is about capturing the "contemporary culture of LA".
There will be a "vibrant and fun" economy, but you won't be able to buy property.
A variety of different side missions and "more sophisticated" minigames, including yoga, triathlons, Jet Skiing, base-jumping, tennis and golf. There's a full golf course in the game. You can go scuba diving along the coastline of Los Santos, or go to the gym on the seafront.
Each character will have unique hobbies, including "one or two key minigame activities per character".
San Andreas' RPG-like player customization is still absent, but you can customize the clothing of each character.
GTA IV's romance feature has been removed.
Like in GTA IV, players can make friends and hang out with certain NPCs, including Michael's wife Amanda and son Jimmy, Franklin's "crazy friend" Lamar, and Trevor's mate Ron.
GTA IV's mobile phone returns, but a lot of its features have been altered. You can use it to access the internet.
Dynamic missions - hidden missions dotted around the game world. "Going off-road in the desert, you may come across two parked cars and a sea of dead bodies around them... Investigate if you want."

I watched the most recent trailer for GTAV today, and I have to say it looks interesting. Definitely feels like a bit of a different take storyline wise than we've seen.

Message from RockStar: Grand Theft Auto 5 release date delayed to September 17

Dear all,

Today, we have an official release date to share with you: Grand Theft Auto V will arrive in stores on September 17, 2013.

We know this is about four months later than originally planned and we know that this short delay will come as a disappointment to many of you, but, trust us, it will be worth the extra time. GTAV is a massively ambitious and complex game and it simply needs a little more polish to be of the standard we and, more importantly, you require.

To all Grand Theft Auto fans, please accept our apologies for the delay, and our promise that the entire team here is working very hard to make the game all it can be. We are doing all we can to help ensure it will meet if not exceed your expectations come September – we thank you for your support and patience.

The GTA Team

going underwater, skydiving, and minigunning. Just another day for GTA V

Rockstar released a batch of new Grand Theft Auto 5 screens this morning, which once again shows the city of Los Santos at a number of striking angles. There's high, low, underwater, on the roads, in the clouds, and ablaze avec minigun.

'Grand Theft Auto 5' box art sticks to series template

Rockstar Games is about to provide an important update on Grand Theft Auto V. They appear to be unveiling the box art with a mural in New York City.

The mural (via GI) is only partially up now. However, the GTA V logo is visible. It also features the same multi-paned layout as previous GTA games' box art.

Rockstar promised to release the box art back in January. Then again, they also planned to planned to release the game this spring. Plans change.

GTA V brings the series back to Los Santos. Players take on the role of three very different criminals in the city. The trio teams up to perform a variety of daring heists.

The mural will presumably be completed this week. We'll let you know when that happens.

article above was posted 3/31
[updated 4/2]

There are many tried and true formulas in the video game industry—killing terrorists in “Call of Duty,” bopping mushroom-like creatures on the head in “Mario,” cerebral meditations on capitalism expressed by shooting things in the face in “BioShock.” Few of these magic formulas is as sacrosanct as Rockstar’s secret recipe for “Grand Theft Auto,” a game that, despite (or because of) its endless controversies, never ceases to impress gamers and their critics alike. If there was ever any doubt that Rockstar would shake up the “Grand Theft Auto” paradigm with its upcoming “GTA V,” the official box art unveiled today put that errant speculation to rest.

Like all the series’ titles since “GTA III” first brought open-world anarchy to consoles back in 2001, “Grand Theft Auto V’s” box art is a cartoonish mural depicting some of the colorful cast of characters that will populate a fictionalized version of Los Angeles. The game’s three protagonists—Trevor (holding a sniper rifle), Franklin (armed with a handgun) and Michael (riding a jetski)—take up most of the bottom left portion of the violent mosaic.

This makes the new box art more akin to “Grand Theft Auto 4’s” box art, which featured protagonist Niko Bellic prominently, than older “GTA” titles, which mostly centered on the various gangland stereotypes and high-end vehicles the player would confront in the game. And for all its predecessors’ controversies, it’s worth noting that “GTA V’s” graphics don’t showcase some cel-shaded version of a sexy woman sticking her tongue out or doing something similarly suggestive—a trope that has taken up valuable packaging space in “GTA” games since “Vice City” was first released in 2002.

This time, the token female character is grinning with a come-hither look as she glances momentarily away from her iPhone-like smartphone (notice that its logo is a basket of fruit rather than a single Apple). Oh how far we’ve come.

“Grand Theft Auto 5” will come out on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 17. Rockstar is already accepting pre-orders for the new game, and has made the new cover art available as a downloadable wallpaper along with some other images from the game.

[semi update]

I just noticed this on Rockstars' website:
"Presenting the official cover art for Grand Theft Auto V featuring Franklin, Michael and Trevor."

This is hands down the most anticipated game of the year. I haven't been excited for a game this much since Skyrim.

Besides the overall scope and finite details, the last part of the video is what really got me excited. GTA IV's multiplayer became so tedious and overly chaotic that it became boring very quickly.

I think I mentioned earlier in this topic like a year ago that I wasn't the biggest fan of GTA IV. Coming after San Andreas, it always felt like one step forward, two steps back to me. But that new trailer was kind of amazing. If the characters aren't annoying to the point where they ruin the game and they cut out the monotonous side missions (or at least make them optional by not having awful characters constantly calling your cell phone), this should be awesome. Also helps me make the decision of not having to buy a PS4 or Xbox1 at launch along with a few other games coming out this fall.

Why Rockstar? Why must you make me regret pre-ordering a PS4 when this game will be taking up a year of my life?

Of course it'll look better than any other GTA... the next-gen console will certainly be a nice improvement.
I'm looking forward to the PC release, and I'm willing to wait. It'll look even THAT MUCH better.

On the other hand, when GTA IV came out people were boasting about how gorgeous and "perfect" it was, but I was just pissed at how horrible the controls were, the storyline was "meh" and the graphics were horrendous.

This looks to be the improvement I was expecting when GTA IV was released.

Looking forward to it.
