Your 5 Favorite Films From Your 5 Favorite Directors
Searching through the archives I found this same thread, but rather on male actors. I really enjoy the concept though, and I would love to see the same idea but for directors (I'm notoriously terrible with finding threads though, so forgive me if this has been done before).
I guess I'll do mine first by way of demonstration. Stanley Kubrick 1. 2001: A Space Odyssey 2. Barry Lyndon 3. Dr. Strangelove 4. Paths of Glory 5. A Clockwork Orange Jacques Tati 1. Playtime 2. Mon Oncle 3. Jour De Fete 4. Trafic 5. Parade Federico Fellini 1. 8½ 2. Nights of Cabiria 3. La Strada 4. I Vitelloni 5. La Dolce Vita Sergio Leone 1. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly 2. Once Upon a Time in America 3. A Fistful of Dollars 4. For a Few Dollars More 5. Once Upon a Time in the West Rainer Werner Fassbinder 1. World on a Wire 2. The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant 3. A top 6 (so might as well make it their top 6) because it's too hard to say who of the final three to cut in favor of the other two. So different. Do you give more credit for 6 masterpieces and no films less than great or 12 masterpieces but a few merely decent movies? I can't decide, but these directors are my absolute cream of the crop highest tier:
Martin Scorsese 1.) Taxi Driver 2.) Raging Bull 3.) GoodFellas 4.) No Direction Home: Bob Dylan 5.) Mean Streets 6.) The Departed or Gangs of New York (I go back and forth, GONY reaches much greater peaks and has the best non-DeNiro performance in Marty's ouevre but also has much lower points and some dodgy performances and editing, Departed isn't very deep but is superbly constructed and the most rewatchable movie of the last decade) Ingmar Bergman 1.) Persona 2.) Wild Strawberries 3.) Scenes from A Marriage 4.) Cries and Whispers 5.) Fanny and Alexander 6.) Winter Light Stanley Kubrick 1.) 2001: A Space Odyssey 2.) Barry Lyndon 3.) Dr. Strangelove 4.) Paths of Glory 5.) Lolita 6.) A Clockwork Orange Frederick Wiseman 1.) Welfare 2.) Hospital 3.) Domestic Violence 4.) Juvenile Court 5.) Near Death 6.) High School Andrei Tarkovsky 1.) Andrei Rublev 2.) The Mirror 3.) The Sacrifice 4.) Stalker 5.) Solaris 6.) Ivan's Childhood Akira Kurosawa 1.) Ikiru 2.) Seven Samurai 3.) Stray Dog 4.) Red Beard 5.) High and Low 6.) Rashomon Last edited by QUENTIN; 10-24-2012 at 01:34 AM.. |

I find this one difficult as many directors I admire and would consider a favourite are for reasons found within one or, at most, a few films. Tobe Hooper being a favourite for just TCM. FW Murnau a favourite for Sunrise and Nosferatu, although I respect his cinematic technique in non-favourite films such as The Last Laugh. Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot is a reason for me thinking highly of the director despite his Hollywood offerings being subpar. Ditto for Hirschbiegel, with Downfall being his only work of excellence. Then there's LQ Jones, a fine example of a what could've been had he made more.
Favourite directors (with five or more likeable films, and in no particular order): Hitchcock: Vertigo, Rear Window, The Birds, Rope, Psycho. Leone: Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad And The Ugly, Once Upon A Time In The West, Once Upon A Time In America. Spielberg: Jaws, Jurassic Park, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Duel, The Color Purple. Kubrick: A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr Strangelove, Lolita. (I would add some hms, but I would only end up listing his entire career) One from these: Polanski: Macbeth, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, The Tenant, Death And The Maiden. Eastwood: High Plains Drifter, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Unforgiven, Mystic River, Play Misty For Me. Peckinpah: The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs, Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid, The Getaway, Cross of Iron. I chose the directors based on a number of factors (consistency, style, number of masterpieces, etc.) rather than just simply picking the ones who have made the most movies I've loved. For instance, the five Kieslowski movies I've listed are actually the only five that I've seen, but the themes he explored as well as the style he employed make it impossible for me to exclude him. In other words, despite his limited output, his movies simply mean too much to me to pretend that he hasn't earned a position above more prolific filmmakers.
Anyway, the directors aren't in any particular order. Only the films are ranked. Woody Allen 1. Hannah and Her Sisters- A+ 2. Manhattan- A+ 3. Annie Hall- A 4. Crimes and Misdemeanors- A 5. The Purple Rose of Cairo- A Krzysztof Kieslowski 1. Three Colors: Blue- A+ 2. Three Colors: Red- A 3. The Decalogue- A 4. The Double Life of Veronique- A 5. Three Colors: White- A- Yasujiro Ozu 1. An Autumn Afternoon- A+ 2. Tokyo Story- A+ 3. The End of Summer- A 4. Late Spring- A 5. I Was Born, But...- A- Luis Bunuel 1. The Phantom of Liberty- A+ 2. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie- A+ 3. Viridiana- A 4. The Exterminating Angel- A 5. That Obscure Object of Desire- A Akira Kurosawa 1. Seven Samurai- A+ 2. High and Low- A+ 3. Rashomon- A 4. Throne of Blood- A 5. Yojimbo- A I almost put Ingmar Bergman on here, but I guess I'd rank him ever so slightly below these five. Honorable mention goes to Chris Marker for making the biggest impact on me with the fewest films (just two, and since one of them is a short, I guess you could even say one and a half). I decided to tally up all the votes so far and see how the Top 5 would shape up.
Here it is. 1. Stanley Kubrick 2. Martin Scorsese 3. Steven Spielberg 4. Quentin Tarantino 5. Tie - David Fincher/Paul Thomas Anderson/Akira Kurosawa It's only 17 schomes, but I still think it's a pretty good indication of what the majority of schmoes would choose anyway. |

Color me surprised by the amount of love Gangs of New York is getting on this thread. Don't get me wrong, I love the film, but I had no idea so many schmoes considered it to be top tier Scorsese. It seems like it has aged well...

Martin Scorsese-he is simply the best ever IMO.
Goodfellas-best movie ever. Casino-second best movie ever (j/k). Raging Bull-fascinating look at a man’s self-destruction. Taxi Driver-fascinating look at a mans separation from reality. Shutter Island-another I would list among the best of past 15 years. Coen brothers-everything they do entertains. Fargo-funny, fascinating, great characters. The Big Lebowski-thats just my opinion man. True Grit-pleasantly surprised here. Never thought they could pull it off but IMO, they made it better than the original. No Country for Old Men-at first I did not like this much. After three viewings, it has become a favorite of mine. Intolerable Cruelty-I fucking love this movie. All the actors do a great job, the backstabbing and one-upping, the nonstop douchebaggery by Jones and Clooney, this movie is immensely entertaining. Ridley Scott-dude makes intense movies. Alien-best horror/sci-fi/terror movie ever. Sets the bar. Black Hawk Down-best war movie since Full Metal jacket. Black Rain-best cop flick ever. Blade Runner-groundbreaking, stunning, and fascinating. Gladiator-definite top three of the new millennium. Paul Thomas Anderson-best of the current generation. There Will Be Blood-best movie of the new millennium, top 5 of all time. Boogie Nights-mind blowing, shocking, entertainment epitomized with a great story and characters. Magnolia-engrossing, epic film making. Have not seen The Master yet and did not like Punch Drunk so I only got three for him. However, damn, these are easily three of the best movies of the past 15 years. No way, I can keep him off the list. David Fincher-he needs to write something to be considered great. However, the stories he picks are top notch. Fight Club-what more needs to be said here? Seven-same as above. Zodiac-meticulous, engrossing, epic film making. The Social Network-bristles with energy, fascinating character study. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo-I know, I know, the remake thing and the ending. I do not care, I love this story. I loved the original and loved this even more because of the increased production value and Fincher's direction. Last edited by rustysyringe; 10-26-2012 at 09:56 AM.. |

I'm so pleased at discovering someone else here actually watches and likes Fassbinder, since he goes almost completely unmentioned on these boards. Plus, you appreciate Bitter Tears, which is criminally underrecognized. The fact that he, in his twenties, could write something that good in 12 hours, and film it in 10 days, should depress the shit out of anyone who wants to make movies for a living.
