Well supposedly they have been working on scrips and treatments for the past few years. Lucas told Hamil as far back as last year that they were definitely moving forward with a new movie.

I can't help but think how amazing it would be if they used the Knights of the Old Republic storyline.

Yes they can, that's why they watch Clone Wars. And second who cares, real movie fans hate it when their movies are aimed at children or even worse teens. Why should young people enjoy our Star Wars movie, if they wanted to enjoy it they should've been born earlier.

I'm honestly more concerned with the casting choices than the director. There are a host of directors I would be stoked to see get the project. The names being thrown around though for the roles have made me a little worried. Disney wants big names and not people plucked from relative obscurity. Some of those roles are some big shoes to fill, namely Han solo. Will Chewbacca be CGI?

Steven Spielberg probably, I wouldn't want to see Joss Whedon at all, I'm not saying he is a bad director I loved the Avengers, I just don't think he would be a good fit for this project. I would like to see Alfonso Cuaron direct as well.

I hope not. People in suits works. Chewy was one of the better created alien characters. And a little person in a Yoda suit would be better than the CGI and possibly better than puppet Yoda, although admittedly Yoda puppet was quite good.

The Skywalker storyline seems to be done. Idk why they want to carry it on. There must be other interesting characters in this universe.

This could all be an expensive disaster.

Lucas wasn't that bad. There were mistakes he made. But the Return of the Jedi scene in Jabba's Palace was the most interesting part of all Star Wars films.

Lucas has long hinted that Episodes VII-IX dealt mostly with the next generation of Skywalkers, i.e. the children of Luke and Han & Leia. It would make little sense to me to continue episode numbering system if the central characters of these movies didn't have direct ties to the first 6 installments.

You say it was a side story. Maybe it was; maybe it wasn't. Whatever the truth, the scene was the most excitement out of the franchise. Slave girls, and pit inhabited by a Rancor awaiting its live feed.

Lets remember another two things: Children are whiney irritants, or petulant little shits like Harry Potter. And, Jedi's are boring, always calm, always confident, always poker faced people.

A good start would be getting the original trilogy right. Clearing out the clutter of unnecessary cgi added over the years. Replacing the silly soft toys with well done cgi. Bringing back the Emperor's monkey eyes. And Han shot first.

Next. They should learn what made the original work. One reason was the character arc of the protagonists. Some guy who thinks he just an average bloke (relatable to the audience) goes through emotional trauma when his family are killed, and joins up with a small charismatic group to take on the evils of the world who are responsible for his family's murder and so much more.

There's a real chance to do something special. Well constructed and believable planets and its creatures. And going on this journey with exciting adventurers who are emotionally involved and relatable to the audience.

Correction: Lucas' Jedi's are boring, and I dont think we've ever seen the Academy, other than a glistening future-y non-descript thing right before Anakin kills them all.

They certainly don't have to be. Kids love Jedi's, I think bringing that side of Star Wars to life would likely be the single biggest marketing move they could do with this new franchise.

Besides, Luke is going to re-start the Academy, so why not bring him back as the teacher, and create a load of new characters we can get behind. It's the perfect franchise material.

Over the past seven years, Collider’s track record has been pretty good. The reason is, before we run any “scoop,” we always make sure to double source it so we know the information is accurate. However, the story we are about to run has not been confirmed, and I want to make sure everyone knows this is not 100%. I only decided to run this because I trust my sources and it’s Star Wars. In addition, while I spent all weekend trying to lock this story down, all my normal connections would not go on record (or they did not know), so this is going up as a “rumor” and “unconfirmed.”

Now that I’ve warned you this is just a “rumor”….

I’m hearing that Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-Ass, Stardust, Layer Cake, and X-Men: First Class, is in talks with Lucasfilm to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. My sources tell me this is the main reason he dropped out of the X-Men sequel (which Bryan Singer is now directing). Hit the jump for more.


As most of you know, last week Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion dollars and they also announced a 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII. Seconds after the deal was announced, a bunch of interviews were released featuring Disney CEO Bob Iger and George Lucas talking about the business deal, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Lucas discussing Star Wars: Episode VII and revealing that they’ve already met with writers for the new film. It was clear that this deal has been in the works for awhile.

As such, it makes a lot of sense that while we only just heard this news, behind-the-scenes Lucasfilm has been working hard to land a director to helm the new installment.

Now you have to ask yourself, why would Vaughn abruptly drop out of helming the X-Men sequel when the head of 20th Century Fox (Tom Rothman) is leaving the studio? After all, while Rothman helped make some great moviesover the past few years, he’s also known as a micro-manager that can rub some filmmakers the wrong way. With Rothman out, I imagine Vaughn would have had more creative control on the sequel and it would have been an easier film to make.

But if Lucasfilm offered Vaughn the keys to Star Wars, that’s something he’d likely jump ship for.

While many of you might be wondering if Vaughn can handle directing a Star Wars movie, I really think he’s a great choice. After all, he made a fantastic X-Men movie that successfully rebooted the franchise, his work with a limited budget on Kick-Ass was also great, and Stardust proved he can make one hell of an adventure film.

In addition, Vaughn is a writer. He worked on the scripts for X-Men: First Class, The Debt, Stardust and Kick-Ass (with Jane Goldman) so if he ends up directing Star Wars, we’d also be getting someone that could solve script issues on set. It’d be great if he could convince Goldman to come onboard as well.

So is Vaughn lining up to direct the full new trilogy or just the first film? I have no idea. But I’d imagine if this deal does happen, it would be similar to the one Marc Webb has on Spider-Man, which is they’ll do it on a film by film basis, with the assumption that if the first film is a success and he wants to come back, he could.

Anyway, as I have already said many times, for now Vaughn directing Star Wars is just a “rumor.” I’d imagine after this posts, it’ll either be confirmed or it will blow up in my face. I’m hoping it’s true.

This is the most excited I’ve been for Star Wars since 1998 and I honestly cannot wait to see the new movie in 2015. What about you?

I would absolutely adore Vaughn directing a Star Wars film. Layer Cake is a freakin' gem of a crime drama, and both First Class and Kick Ass prove, easily, that he could handle this material, IMO.

Apparently Vaughn has denied any involvement with this. I think he'd have done a good job, but I'd still like to see what Neil Blomkamp could do with this franchise. Spielberg would be another good choice, but I'm not sure how interested he'd be in doing it. It's exciting stuff nonetheless. Sounds good to me. Oblivion sounds like it'll be amazing, Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 had great screenplays, so now I'm awaiting to see who the director will be.

Nope, I think it's likely with the timing of Vaughn dropping out of First Class 2, but he denied any involvement with Star Wars. So we'll just have to wait and see.

I want a rated R Star Wars kinda like Kill Bill style. We've had PG, PG-13 and even NC-17/rated X versions of Star Wars. Lets get a rated R one. I want to see multiple non-droid limbs and heads cut off and what hot jedi/sith sex would look like with good effects.
