Most overrated films...history and current

So far I think The Deer Hunter is the most overrated film I've seen. For recent films it would be The Artist and Tree of Life.

The most overrated actor or actress of all time is Meryl Streep.

Most overrated films of all time I'd say Shawshank Redemption, Forrest Gump, and City of God.

More recent most overrated I'd go with Nolan's movies, Inception and his Batman trilogy.

Most overrated actors and actresses I'd list Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hanks, and Kate Winslet.

Uch. Overrated. What a BS and nonexistent concept.

I really don't understand the absurd fetishization of either this type of thread or the "Film is entirely a matter of opinion..." arguments.

For classics, I gotta go with The Quiet Man, A Clockwork Orange, The Exorcist, Home Alone, Forrest Gump, The Usual Suspects, and Titanic. Recently, I'd have to say The Blind Side, Avatar, The Help, War Horse, Chronicle, The Hunger Games, The Avengers, and The Dark Knight Rises. Acting-wise, I can't stand Tom Hanks. Tom Cruise isn't very good either, but he's certainly less beloved than Tom Hanks.

Though I've tried to refrain from using the word "overrated" since it sort of implies that everyone else is wrong and I'm right. These are just films that a lot of people love but I don't.

Overrated? People who don't like the term overrated.

I kid, I kid. But for the life of me, I'll never understand those people.

My list:

Killing Them Softly
The Master
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Fincher version)
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Scott Pilgrim Vs the World
The King's Speech
The Kids Are Alright
The Town (I liked it, but didn't love it)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
The Sound of Music
Inglourious Basterds (still enjoy it, but it's very overrated)
Moonstruck
The Shining

I can agree with most of these, but not "The King's Speech" and "The Sound of Music". TSoM has the reputation of a sentimental family movie, but when I watch it I still find it a great story.

That's because the term overrated is left undefined. It's like saying, "I think Star Wars is better than some movies." or, "Star Wars isn't as good as some movies." Ok, but what are you comparing it to? I've heard people define overrated as being too popular or made a lot from the box office. Now if this was specifically IMDb ratings or RT then that's at least clear. It's rated too highly based on what criteria?

I'm not sure what the fuss is about. "Overrate" means to rate too highly....and it is understood in my usage that this is overrated by the general public and/or critics. I guess I should clarify that I am referring to critics....not the general public.

And yet it's still an opinion. And which critics opined that Meryl Streep was overrated? Every time I read a review about her, it's great.

The most perfect post in an "overrated movie" thread...

The most overrated movies of all time are the ones that other people like that I don't. The end.

Yeah, obviously it's an opinion. Did you know this is a discussion forum about movies?

It's pretty well known that Pauline Kael and Katherine Hepburn weren't fans of Streep. They said they could see the wheels turning when watching her performances, which were obviously their opinions.

Never had a problem with the word, pretty clear what it means and it's no more objective than "great" or "bad" or any other descriptor. The phobia some people seem to have of it always struck me as pure silliness.

History: Gone with the Wind
Current: Lord of The Rings/The Dark Knight

Can't help but think a lot of these are simply "man's movies" where you're just the radically unintended audience, and I'm reminded a bit of the DFW-Charlie Rose talk about Unforgiven. Whether or not you figure that's simply a negative commentary on the male psyche . . .
