Act of Valor - The action sequences were really good but the rest of the film wasn't. I didn't like the slow motion they used at times, the voice over, and especially the stilted acting and dialogue. I realize many of the people were actual professional soldiers and not actors but that doesn't make the film any better. The only actor I did like is the one who played Cristo. 5/10
Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit - This was pretty funny and I liked the story too. Gromit just cracks me up with his constant exasperation at Wallace. 8/10 |

Errrr thank you?. It has its own review thread in the movie review section in the forum also ![]() Seven Psychopaths (2012) A British black comedy but you wouldn't really think it, this could almost be another Tarantino cauldron of tales all mixed together. Hell even the films poster has a Guy Ritchie look n feel to it, this could easily of been another cockney crime comedy with the usual suspects cast, in other words more of the same over used cockneys. Instead we have a Pacific coast take that normally wouldn't make me batter an eyelid but the cast is terrific. The films kicks off with a typical Tarantino-ish in your face sequence (yes I promise not to try and use Tarantino anymore). Its simply two hitmen having a chat about killing folk in a quirky manner, your average day for some hitmen, just your average Tarant...oh shit!. Now this isn't really a spoiler as it doesn't effect the film sooooo...some hooded bloke walks up behind these guys and shoots them both in the head at point blank range. Now this is a close up moment and doesn't beat around the bush. BANG! we're off to a cracking start and I'm whimpering from the gore. Talking of gore, this film has it, a little torture gore, but mainly outfight blowing people away gore with nice bloody squibs. Yet despite this there isn't a huge amount of violence, unlike a certain gore hooked director whose initials are QT. The film actually limits the blood n gore but gives you just enough, just enough to keep you happy but not disgust you (almost). The plot is fairly straight forward but with some clever tiny twists and surprises, but nothing overly outstanding. Farrell's character is writing a movie screenplay called 'Seven Psychopaths' and is using his friends to help him along the way. His friends being Rockwell and Walken, the latter seems to be playing a parody of himself to a degree, and the criminal/underground world from which we know him in his career. The story concept Farrell's character is trying to create seems to unfold before him in reality unexpectedly, this leads to much more in depth 'research' on killers than he would have liked. From this we get a nice sub plot about another psycho played by Waits whose character flits in and out of the main story but adds a nice charm if I can say that. The whole film is more or less a parody of your typical Hollywood twisted crime thrillers, almost a homage to Tarantino (argh!), Ritchie or Matthew Vaughn even, whilst slightly mocking them at the same time. What I like about this film is how each psycho is brought to your attention throughout the film. Its not too hard to work out what's gonna happen as characters reveal themselves and the unpredictable gangster boss played by Harrelson takes pursuit. The story does tend to drift somewhat from the midway point as we near the finale, it does get a bit more cartoony and loses its edge. The story is somewhat cliched and an average crime thriller but the characters do save the day luckily. The film isn't as funny as it would like to think it is and the violence can seem a touch uncomfortable as it swings back and forth with emotional moments. The more I think about it this film isn't quite as clever as Mr Director would have you believe but it does amuse thanks to a nice cast. |

The Skin I Live In
![]() Almodovar, you twisted, flamboyant, genius bastard. You got me. I freely admit it. Did not see that coming. European indie revenge as only Pedro could concoct in his shrewd imagination, he cast Antonio Banderas as the widowed Spanish plastic surgeon with tragic secrets and a mean streak, no doubt to throw us off the scent of the demented depths his character has to go through the course of the film. In that sense it was the perfect move. Banderas has never been creepier. Skin-crawling, you might say. But it’s the lovely Elena Anaya as Banderas’s mysterious live-in patient that creates the most intrigue for the first half of the movie as you wonder just what the arrangement is between her and Banderas, and what relation she is to his past that could possibly explain why the fuck he has her ensnared in some psychosexual dependency that only gets mutually stranger as the film winds on. One of the most strikingly original revenge thrillers you’re apt to see in any language, for my money. It has its flaws, but it’s solid. -> 7/10 |

Double Indemnity - My favorite film of all time. Everyone is excellent in their roles and Billy Wilder both wrote a wonderful script and directed a masterpiece. 10/10

****spoilers ahead****
Generally, the way Ledgard's backstory was delivered, about halfway through. Specifically, right after the rape/murder sequence with Vera and Zeca. I think the script could've peppered in more about Ledgard's relationships with his wife, daughter and half-brother earlier, without sacrificing any of the surprise of the revenge twist later. Since it informs Ledgard's entire motivation, taking care of some of that tragic history in smaller pieces instead of one chunk of exposition through Marilia (though made visually interesting with those strategically spliced flashbacks, I'll admit) would've made me care more about Ledgard's point of view. As it is, the film feels detached from him and his goals when it shrouds him in utter mystery as some kind of creepy Spanish Frankenstein. Also, the character of Zeca himself seemed less like a character than a convenient plot device of random sadism to bring Ledgard and Vera's storyline to its boiling point.
Though I guess these are not so much "flaws" as they are "things that impacted my overall impression of the whole work when I was finished", and I can't really explain it any further than I did. If none of the above made any sense, then that's probably because it didn't and I'm wrong... ...OR, maybe I added that last line to my review just to make sure you were paying attention. *taps nose* THINK about it... |

I actually watched this one for the first time about a year ago. I was expecting the worst but I was actually surprised how enjoyable it was. Sure, it wasn't great (or really, even good) but it was entertaining. Besides Seasons of the Witch, there hasn't been a Halloween film I haven't at least enjoyed on an entertainment level.

This movie was such a disappointment. It is seriously right up my ally (I adore indie romcoms) but it was borderline bad. The performances were decent, but it was obnoxious.
