Most Shocking Death Scenes?

Hi everyone,

I was talking about this with a friend recently and thought it made a nice little forum thread idea. So, what are the most shocking death scenes in cinema?

One that instantly springs to mind for me has got to be from the very start of Sinister. The very opening shot, straight away we see a family of 4 being hanged. It's just a single unflinching shot that seems to last for ages. What an opening! Once you see that, you know you're in for a very special movie!

Another one that I thought of - completely different to Sinister! - is the death scene in Bambi. If you want to traumatise a kid, stick on Bambi...or Lion King!

So what are your most shocking cinematic death or murder scenes? Which ones either made you jump back in horror, or burst with emotion?

The Godfather Part II

Spoiler:
When Michael has his brother Fredo killed. I remember having a certain suspension when Michael cut short his son's fishing trip with Fredo. Then the shot where they're on the boat in the middle of the lake, and you see the gun come out. Wow, what an emotional death because you knew that Fredo was humiliated by his actions, and he felt true remorse for what he had done.

THIS

A really cool and clever film. But man, I didn't expect anything that violent. Most shocking for sure, especially if you watch the film from the beginning.

Christopher Plummer's best imo.

The Departed

Spoiler:
Having never seen Infernal Affairs, I was pretty shocked at Leo's death.

L.A. Confidential

Spoiler:
Kevin Spacey's death.

Knockaround Guys

Spoiler:
Seth Green's death

Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)

Spoiler:
Maria Bello, though more sad than shocked.

Zero Dark Thirty

Spoiler:
Even though I saw it coming, you just new the scene was building up to it, but that didn't diminish the impact of Jennifer Ehle's death in that movie.

Spartan

Spoiler:
Derek Luke's death kind of came out of nowhere and was fairly surprising.

As far as deaths that were brutal intense it doesn't get any more intense than in Saving Private Ryan:

Spoiler:
Adam Goldberg's death

If you've seen the films, then you know which ones I mean:

To Live and Die in L.A.
Cache
The Great Silence
Burn After Reading
George Washington

I'm still surprised as hell with the finale in Se7en.

Spoiler:
Even though it happens offscreen, it's still surprising as hell that Paltrow was killed off, especially everything involving her backstory

Are we talking about in terms of how graphic? Because I have a different one in mind that's about the emotion of the scene.

Scarface (1983)
Spoiler:
When Tony finds out that Manny is with his sister and he becomes so angry that he kills him on the spot. What makes the scene so powerful is that immediately after, Tony basically realizes "what the fuck did I just do?" He is so upset with what he just did, he doesn't want to live anymore. This is what makes the final scene much more powerful if you watch it in the context of the film. Tony is so disgusted by himself and angry that he goes out with a huge bang. The death of Manny (in terms of the emotion) is one of the most memorable in my opinion.

The self-murder in Cache

The murders in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer make me nauseous.

I'd actually say that
Spoiler:
Matt Damon then immmediately blowing away James Badge Dale after he'd saved Damon's ass by killing DiCaprio
was even more shocking.

This isn't really a spoiler so I won't user tags, but my most shocking would be an extremely graphic scalping scene in Nurse Betty. Maybe no more graphic than any other scalping scene in a movie you might expect it, but I thought this was to be a light hearted comedy so it completely took me by surprise.

The plot of the movie is that Renee Z witnesses her husband's murder and then due to the shock she loses her memory and thinks she's a character in soap opera (something like that). I expected a shooting, not a scalping. Ugh. I can take it when I expect graphic scenes, but it was so out of the blue it was very disturbing the way they did it.

The R rating should have clued me that it was going to be more than a lighthearted comedy, but I expected raunch not scalpings.
