Duma- A Great Film Nobody Saw

Anybody see this great film. Saw it over the weeknd cause it was reccomended to me and I thought it was a great family film. The photography was gorgeous and the cheetah footage was so well done. The story between the two characters in the desert and Duma the cheetah (really the only characters in the film) is touching and never too cloying. Its not a perfect film as the plot is so thin but its too bad this was pretty much ingored.

8/10

I posted a review of it in the Current Films forum way back in September when I first saw it. A great family film -- they can be made without cynicism or pop cultural references, as Duma proves -- and Carol Ballard is two for two following the equally charming Fly Away Home. A standout performance by Eamonn Walker, too.

I gave it the same grade as you.

See The Black Stallion too. Between the great Black Stallion, Fly Away Home (my personaly favorite of his), and Duma Im amazed hes not more of a commodity. Hes like a live action Pixar. He makes childresn films that can be enjoyed by everyone and doesnt talk down to you.

I just realized that I had The Black Stallion in my DVD collection, and I have never once seen it! I can't believe I've amassed such an error.

Another film (and director) who makes good films for children without condescension is Alfonso Cuaron. A Little Princess was awful when Shirley Temple starred in it back in the day, but Cuaron's update is simply wonderful to watch.

I actually just added it to my netflix queue yesterday because of seeing the ads for the DVD recently. It really looks charming and engaging just from the trailer.

I always enjoyed The Bear and The Black Stallion so I know I'll like this one, and I think I'll add Two Brothers to my list as well.

"Y Tu Mama Tambien" should be a staple of any child's movie-watching experience. I'll be sure to show it to my kids when I have them
But seriously, A Little Princess is quite a wonderful film.

Allow me to also nominate Hayao Miyazaki. Sure, he has some more mature animated films (Princess Mononoke comes to mind), but most of his others are truly childhood classics. He has an amazing ability to really enter the mind of a child. My Neighbour Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Serice, Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, even Howl's Moving Castle to some extent... all wonderful children's films.
