THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Nobody started a thread for it, so I thought I would...
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA ![]() Directed by: David Frankel Written by: Aline Brosh McKenna (screenplay), Lauren Weisberger (novel) Starring: Meryl Streep Anne Hathaway Emily Blunt Tracie Thoms Adrian Grenier Stanley Tucci ![]() Genres: Comedy, Drama Running Time: 106 min. Release Date: June 30th, 2006 (wide) MPAA Rating: PG-13 for some sensuality. Distributors: 20th Century Fox ![]() Plot: In the dizzying world of New York fashion, where size zero is the new 2, six is the new 8, and a bad hair day can end a career, Runaway Magazine is the Holy Grail. Overseen with a finely manicured fist by Miranda Priestly--the most powerful woman in fashion--Runway is a fearsome gauntlet for anyone who wants to make it in the industry. To make Runway the fashion bible of New York and therefore the world, Miranda has let nothing stand in her way--including a long line of assistants that didn't make the cut. It's a job no self-respecting person can survive, yet it's an opportunity a million young women in New York would kill for. A stint as Miranda's assistant could blast-open the doors for recent college graduate Andy Sachs. More college drab than haute couture, she stands alone among the small army of "Clackers" on staff at Runway--superslim fashion divas clacking their stilettos down the halls of the magazine's Manhattan headquarters. But when Andy comes in for the job, it dawns on her that making it in this industry will take more than drive and determination. And her ultimate test stands before her in head-to-toe Prada. Miranda can spin the fashion world like a basketball but has a devil of a time finding and keeping a good assistant. Andy is completely wrong for the job. But she has something the rest of them don't: she refuses to fail. To become the perfect assistant, Andy will need to make herself over in Miranda's image. Soon, much to her boyfriend's dismay, she can talk the talk, walk the walk and never again confuse Dolce with Gabbana. But the more of life she sees through Miranda's eyes, the more she begins to grasp that Miranda's world is a fabulous but lonely one--and that sometimes great success depends on great sacrifice. But at what cost? |

I saw the preview for this before The Omen. The trailer was literally five minutes straight of the movie...or at least felt like it. No music and it was just one scene.
I literally screamed, "WHY IS THIS STILL GOING ON?!" Because of the pretentious nature of said trailer, I will never see this movie. Ever. |

I'll see any damn thing Meryl Streep does. Hell, I saw Prime just for her, even if it turned out to be pretty bland. And "Devil" is getting strong reviews, it's at 82% at Rotten Tomatoes.

The book is damn entertaining, even if it is repetitive. This looks like the ideal candidate for the weekend. I'm getting together with a massive group of people to see it, and I'm going to be the only guy in the group who has read it.

Fashion is one of the biggest components of the entertainment industry. No matter what huge movie premiere is going on in Hollywood or what awards show is taking place, there's one question that is always asked: "Who are you wearing?" Am I a model? No. Do I have a fashion sense? I think so. I feel that I've gotten better at picking out clothes that make me look good. Would a movie that's entirely about a fashion magazine hold my attention? I wasn't sure it would at first, but it did. The Devil Wears Prada follows the character of Andrea, a young woman trying to become a journalist in New York. In an attempt to make connections, she applies for a job at a fashion magazine called Runway. She interviews with the editor, Miranda Priestly, and lands a job as one of her assistants. Andrea quickly learns that just being an assistant is not going to cut it when working under Priestly, and her life suddenly begins to change. Anne Hathaway slips into the role of Andrea nicely. It's nice to see her get away from those kiddie flicks, although this role is nowhere near as drastic as the one she played in Havoc, where she got nekked(Yes, I meant to spell it like that). The other assistant Emily, played by Emily Blunt, is the kind of part the right actress could have a lot of fun with, and Blunt does just that. Stanley Tucci steps in as Nigel, one of the editor's right hand men, and fulfills his usual job as "the supporting actor". Adrian("Aquaman") Grenier shows up as Andrea's low-key boyfriend, Nate, and doesn't like her transformation from a normal girl to a cocaine-sniffing fashion whore. Just kidding, but she does change, a little. Simon Baker plays Christian Thompson, a big player in the industry who consistently flirts with Andrea. As for the best perfromance in the movie, that goes to Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly. Streep is great actress, and her delivery is perfect with every line of dialogue. She makes acting look so easy. Directing from a screenplay written by Aline Brosh McKenna, David Frankel keeps this flick going at a good pace. The comedic scenes felt fresh and the dramatic ones were not dramatic for long. The cinematography was very slick, and the shots in Paris were the most beautiful ones. I honestly didn't know what to expect going into this movie. The one trailer I saw for Prada wasn't even a real trailer, it was one full scene from the movie. I haven't seen that since the time that Signs came out, where they showed a couple of the key scary scenes in the movie instead of always showing the traditional trailer. That one scene in Prada was refreshing and certainly got my attention, which the rest of the movie held onto well. Overall Review: *** stars out of 4 Best Line: Streep: Please, bore someone else with your questions. |

Can't wait to see it, actually. I love Streep, like Anne Hathaway a lot, and the movie itself looks very interesting.
I'd MUCH rather see this than Superman Returns (which I'm boycotting, along with the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel). |

This is my pick of the week. I'm looking more forward to The Devil Wears Prada than Superman Returns. Anyway, this looks like a fun time, and with the wonderful Meryl Streep on board, I'm definitely there.

If there are ladies present, it's a different story. You must impress them with the chick stuff (the "gooey icky romance crap" as my Communications teacher called it when paraphrasing one of her previous students). Pull out "the Notebook" card when you can - that seems to work best... But this movie should be fun. I want to see it. But I first need to see Superman Returns, which is going to be hard in LA this week. I'll have to figure something out. |

And to think I used to like you. I actualy agree with the Superman thing. I've always found him and Clark Kent, as charcters, very boring. Pirates on the other hand is all kinds of great. I have never heard of this movie until I come onto this thread. Why I have no idea? But as has already been said Meryl Streep is always brilliant and Anne Hathway is always good. I'm looking really forward to this now. |

I am looking forward to seeing this. I felt the trailer was entertaining and it was a great idea to use a scene from the movie as the trailer, which is not done very often today. I have a feeling this could end up being the surprise hit of the summer.

The Devil Wears Prada - 5/10
Streep is great, but the lengths the screenwriter goes to butcher the guilty pleasure novel wears out its initial welcome. Call it a Disney-fied version of the story, with a finale that drags and an antagonist that is softened when she should be even more venemous. Perhaps if I hadn't read the book, it would work a lot better, but the Cinderella overtones bring the beginning zip to a slow burn. The climactic confrontation between Andy and Miranda never came as a result of said sap, and disappoints. |

SPOILERS!!!
A disappointment. I expected this to be a lot better than it is. The movie fails to successfully balance Andy's personal and professional lives. The result is that both are given short thrift and things never gel as a whole. I didn't buy Andy's transformation from ambitious, idealistic and grounded young journalist who doesn't give a shit about fashion to a fashion-centric backstabber who becomes obsessed with work and neglects everyone she cares about, and then back again. The movie fails to sell it. Hathaway isn't bad, but she fails to hold her own against Streep. Speaking of Streep, she is brilliant but doesn't have enough screen time. I wanted more of her. Tucci is excellent as well and I would have liked more screen time for him, too. I didn't believe that Andy would have stayed at that job for so long. I didn't buy that she wasn't fired a hell of a lot sooner. And despite her supposed change, she is still nice to Emily after being treated horribly by her over and over again, which I also didn't buy. The subplot with Simon Baker is stupid. I wish it would have focused entirely on Streep and Tucci and the magazine and the fashion world. I liked that aspect. I didn't really care about her boyfriend or her friends or her personal life. Been there done that. It's stale. Streep bumps this up to a 6/10, but barely. |

Eh, this movie sucked. 6/10
Mery Streep was good as usual - but come on, who would want to see a bad film just for her. As a film, it is supposed to work, but it doesn't. The ending, ugh, that was so trite and terible. The fuck, she just realizes that she's been a bastard at that very final confrontation and drops everything? So ridiculously stupid. I was thinking of giving it a 5/10, but I said whatever at this. I agree Madsen, neither Grenier nor Baker were needed. The relationships start at square one, move up a bit, and then return to ground zero. What the hell was the point? The Harry Potter anecdote was funny, but could have been better I think. What needs to be said is that Hathaway is stunning. I've always liked her. What a pretty girl *sigh* Regardless, most of the acting is solid, but the film drags on. I wasn't bored with the film, but some of it was too cliche (like the whole Cinderella premise with no true ties) and the transformation - pure garbage. It was okay, but I didn't like it. It could have been sharper script wise, and it should have had a more interesting end. This was film was pretty much dead meat. Aside from Tucci, Streep, and Hathaway - nothing in this film is really any good. Most of it is just mediocre. |

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts, though. What's even more disappointing is that this mediocre slog is filled with a lot of good performances; besides Streep, Hathaway and Tucci, there's also Emily Blunt -- in one of the perfect casting choices in comparison to the book, she WAS the Emily I imagined while reading the novel. So kudos to the casting department, regardless, in that case. My female friend, who was in competition with me over who would finish the book first, also found the adaptation to be disappointing. We had a talk about it afterward. I still prefer, in the book, Andrea literally telling Miranda to fuck off. That's it. No saccharine nods of the head, no equal footing or mutual understanding between two women. Just an overstressed, overworked employee finally telling off her dragon lady of an employer. |

I don't grade too harshly, and a 7 is usually only OK. But other than that, glad we agree. The book would be an interesting read, but I won't even bother. Emily Blunt was great too, really. She had some great scenes. I actually liked most of the acting - it was really energetic, and that is the film's saving grace. Otherwise (well, regardless actually), it is pure garbage. See, I have no book to compare it to, so I wasn't let down one bit. I envisioned it as a sillly fluff piece, and that's what I got. I don't care. My female friend liked it a lot, but then again, chicks under 18...not very bright - regardless whether they go to private schools or not. But that's a whole different story. It was ok, and I guess I had fun observing the actors, and it wasn't a complete waste of time, but I was disappointed, despite not coming in with any expectations. And the ending you stated sounds better than that convoluted nodding heads bull crap - although I think not going in that seperate way which is sooo unbearably cliche would be good. If Anne Hathaway had succumbed to the devil that is fashion, it would make for a much more interesting film, and a much more interesting moral decision. Right now - nothing new. Basically a useless film - but you do get to see Paris (right?, or was that a soundstage? ). |

The best part of the viewing involved the gentleman behind us, probably fashion designers all, who would squeal loudly everytime Hathaway had a new fashion look (the Jimmy Choos line got a "Oooo!" out of 'em, which made me laugh). I've never had a running commentary in a theatrical movie that wasn't DVD, but I didn't mind. |

The best thing about The Devil Wears Prada was definetly the performance of Meryl Streeep. She gives a wonderful performance and plays the cold, calculating, self centered egotistical head of runway Miranda Priestly perfectly. This performance should be a lock for a best comedic performance nomination at the golden globes. Anne Hathaway gives a decent performance but there was not a huge difference in this performance from her others roles.
*******SPOILERS*********** My biggest complaint was that when Andy quits Runway there was no huge blowup. She just throws her phone in a fountain and that's it. I wanted to see her go off on Miranda for how she treated her like total crap for the entire time she was employed at Runway. ********END SPOILERS****** 7/10 |

A fashion commentary - I'd bet they'll have one for this film on the dvd. But I'm thinking...the only commentary I've gotten is from parents talking rudely during a film they find "boring" (a la "art house" films such as Eternal Sunshine, Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers, and the list goes on and on). I wish they'd talk during Spider Man, but noooo. They have to make silly jokes, which are quite funny sometimes, but still disrespectful. But at least it was Paris that we got to see. Now, who has a crush on Hathaway? For the longest time I'd wanted to see Brokeback and Havoc because of...um, the good acting? But when I saw the films, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. Such a lovely girl forced to denigrate herself. *sigh* I wish she hadn't done those scenes...although it might have helped her carreer. Either that, or the Brokeback performance. |

Apparently, Hathway doesn't really relate to the Disney-fied characters she plays, so what you saw in Brokeback and Havoc may be her trying to make a statement, like "Look at me! I'm more than just reaction takes and falling down! I'm an ACT-ress! I ACT for my art!"

Apparently, she wants to do more "serious" roles, which HAVOC definitely was not. But I'm happy for her - at least Disney got her into the field. And yes, the nudity syndrome is as bullshitty as anything -" I'm an ACTress. I will do anything needed for the film". Eh, doesn't bother me. |

Yeah, I like her, too. Look through the awful wigs and gratuitous nudity (is that really a word?
) in Brokeback, and her phone conversation scene with Heath Ledger was a terrific piece of acting. She was the "left out in the cold" performer, the one who delivers solid work while every other male and female cast member around her receives award noms. |
