Leonardo DiCaprio in THE DEPARTED. He makes it look too damn easy.
The fab five from LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE: Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette, Abigail Breslin, Paul Dano and Steve Carrell. Alan Arkin was a little too over-the-top for my taste. Dano's self-imposed mute teen character is the breakout performance of the year. Bruce Willis and David Morse in 16 BLOCKS: their best work in years. The film was released early on, and action movies hardly produced Oscar nominees (case in point: Paul Walker in RUNNING SCARED...another revelatory performance). Diane Lane and Robin Tunney in HOLLYWOODLAND: Ben Affleck will reap the sole rewards for this film (as he was the best supporting actor this year so far), but these two female supporting performances were just as subtle and powerful. The trio of kids in TWELVE & HOLDING: Conor Donovan, Jesse Camacho and Zoe Weizenbaum. The best child actors since Abigail Breslin. |

Paul Dano in LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, I do think Carrell might have a shot for a nomination.

Leonardo Di Caprio- The Departed
Steve Carrell- Little Miss Sunshine Kate Winslet- Little Children RInko Kikuchi- Babel All I can say is that if Beyonce Knowles gets nominated/wins for Dreamgirls, I will boycott any future award shows. She probably will, seeing how it's typical of them. |

Performances I loved that will likely be overlooked:
Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta - it's such a great, brilliant performance and it will be outright tragic if he doesn't atleast get nominated but he probably won't. Nicolas Cage in World Trade Center - I thought Cage was INCREDIBLE in this movie. I hope he and Michael Pena and Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal and Oliver Stone and the movie itself all get nods. It's the best movie of the year IMO. Better than United 93 IMO. Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine - Greg Kinnear and Steve Carell and Abigail Breslin also turn in standout performances in that movie, yet it is Arkin who leaves the most lasting impression. It's just a great performance. Christopher Plummer in The Lake House - I think it's a shame that I haven't heard any buzz concerning this performance because I thought Plummer was wonderful as Keanu Reeves father. Adam Beach in Flags of Our Fathers - it's one of the year's most moving performances. Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta - It's also a great performance that will be a shamed if she gets overlooked, which is likely sadly. Hugh Jackman in The Prestige - The transformation his character goes through throughout the movie is subtle but chilling. It's an incredible performance, by far Jackman's best work. |

Well... I can only say that most of these deserve to be overlooked. Especially anyone involved with World Trade Center or Little Miss Sunshine, as those movies were both trash.
I do agree with Portman in V for Vendetta... it is a good performance, even though Portman's done better for herself. I think the entire cast of Infamous [except possibly Sandra Bullock] are going to get shafted because of Capote. Which is a shame, as Daniel Craig and Toby Jones give performances that are better than the majority of the treacly shite that passes for an oscar winning performance these days. Its hard to think of anything outstanding from this year, as its all been so vanilla thusfar. |

Well, I'll see Infamous when it comes to dvd. But personally, my expectations are pretty low. Everything about it screams as being a second rate knockoff of Capote.

Robert Downey Jr. in A Scanner Darkly. What a great performance. But they;ll probably exlude him because of the whole animation thing, which is really a shame.
Also, the whole cast of A Prairie Home Companion, particularly Garrison Kieler for a BSA nod, but hopefully he'll get a nomination for his screenplay. |

Infamous is a much superior film to Capote, from the characterizations to the performances. |

These should get nominated, but won't:
Lee Young Ae: Lady Vengeance. A brilliant, very subtle, very quiet performance it would be overlooked even if it weren't in Korean. Joseph Gordon Levitt: Brick A masterclass in a noir lead, but the film's far too small to get much recognition outside, maybe as very long shot, screenplay. Ben Sliney: United 93 He'll get overlooked because he was playing himself, shame. I'm sure I'll be as sickened as ever by the nominations, and the winners, but hey the Oscars are a law unto themselves. |

Ellen Page - Hard Candy
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Brick Ryan Gosling - Half Nelson Bryce Dallas Howard - Manderlay Patrick Wilson - Hard Candy (and possibly Little Children?) There might be a possibility for Gosling to get nominated (and it would be very well deserved), but the rest of them all have, like, a zero percent chance in hell of even being considered for a nomination (though I do hope they receive some recognition at the Independent Spirit Awards). Five of the best performances of the year, and not a one will get an Oscar nod. As to performances that might get buzz based on other factors, yet still remain on the outside: Rinko Kikuchi - Babel (the heart and soul of the film) Shu Qi - Three Times Emily Blunt - The Devil Wears Prada Michael Sheen - The Queen (although he still might ride the coattails of a locked Helen Mirren nom) Kirsten Dunst - Marie Antoinette Will Ferrell - Winter Passing Jackie Earl Haley - Little Children Jodelle Ferland - Tideland (one of the best performances by a child actress) |

Industry insiders say that Michael Sheen actually has a likely chance of getting nominated now that Catch a Fire and Running with Scissors have come out and Tim Robbins/Brian Cox have been pretty much dropped.

Performances I know will go overlooked will be Guy Pierce, Ray Winstone, and Danny Huston in The Proposition, which is a shame because it is the best film so far this year and those performances was fantastic. Also, Aaron Eckhardt in Thank You For Smoking
And I am hoping Abigail Breslin, Alan Arkin, and Steve Carrell get recognized for their work in Little Miss Sunshine. I especially want Breslin to get a nom as I think it was one of the most assured and brilliant performances of the year. Then Leo and Jack deserve nominations for their roles as well. But there is still two months to go and there could be better work ahead, but if not all the ones mentioned above deserve something. |

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Nora Zehetner in Brick the best performances in their respective categories will surely be overlooked as will this brilliant film.
Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed, but if we continue to see a series of disappointments, and there's an upswell of support for The Departed towards the end of the year, it could happen. Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson in Hard Candy Shareeka Epps and Ryan Gosling in Half Nelson these pairs have the best female performances of the year, and they're both out of children. Also feature remarkably strong turns from rising male 20-somethings. Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, and Emily Watson in The Proposition If Peckinpah wasn't appreciated and Jones was overlooked, Hillcoat's film doesn't have a chance. Jackie Earle Haley, Noah Emmerich, and Phylis Somerville in Little Children Winslet's work will likely be recognized, but the three best performances in the film are from relative unknowns and won't be able to ride Children's coattails unless it gets a BP nom. Adriana Barraza in Babel I think Rinko Kinkuci will atleast get a nomination considering everyone who loves the film and even its detractors cite her as deserving. She'll fill the Amy Adams slot this year. Unforunately, the best performance in the movie, the heartbreaking work by Barraza, will certainly be unrecognized. Natalie Jackson Mendoza in The Descent Didn't make as much as Aliens, even though it's better, so it can't even pull off that dark horse shot. Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving in V For Vendetta This will be lucky if it gets a couple of technical nominations. Kevin Kline in A Prarie Home Companion Released too early in the year for anyone to remember Kline's wonderful turn come next February, even if they did admire Altman's film Robert Downey Jr. in A Scanner Darkly No one saw this and many will dismiss it as Downey playing himself. Basically I just named all my nominees so far this year for the various acting awards. The only performances I've seen so far this year that I think actually do have a good shot at nominations and deserve them are Kate Winslett in Little Children, Jack Nicholson in The Departed, and Brad Pitt and Rinko Kikuchi in Babel.
