HOLLYWOOD - 24 star Kiefer Sutherland has accepted an invitation from the U.S. military to teach army cadets it is wrong to torture prisoners.

Sutherland, who plays agent Jack Bauer on the show, has agreed to talk to cadets at the West Point military academy in New York state after army chiefs claimed the show's torture scenes are influencing its newest recruits.

Earlier this month, Brigadier General Patrick Finnegan visited the set of 24 to urge its makers to cut down on torture scenes.

He told the show's producers, "I'd like them to stop. They should do a show where torture backfires. The kids see it and say, 'If torture is wrong, what about 24?'

"The disturbing thing is that although torture may cause Jack Bauer some angst, it is always the patriotic thing to do." .

Would it be any different from that fact that prominent Republican officials and pundits actually use the popularity of the show "24" to justify their torture policies?

If military recruits (and Republicans in general) are confusing a TV show with reality, then it makes sense to use that TV show's star to convince them otherwise.

The reality is that 24 is just a TV show. Jack Bauer is a fictional character, not a government agent acting on your behalf. The scenarios depicted have never happened. There has never been a ticking time bomb situation, much less five in one day. Torture has never been an effective interrogation tool and does not produce viable information, much less instantly and with great regularity.

And finally, the popularity of the show is in no way a referendum on America's tolerance for torture, rogue agents, illegal policy actions by government officials, etc.

Honestly, do I really have to point this out? I know Republicans have been totally out of touch with reality lately, but c'mon.

This reminds me of a scrubs episode where Zach Braff does a more you know PSA. He says a bunch of stuff and then says "Don't smoother your kids," and walks off as silly as possible. I can imagine everyones favorite 80's vampire doing something quite similar.

Because Republicans have been referencing Jack Bauer and citing 24 to prove that the American public approves of torture. And Republicans have been looking for a way to sell torture, which they advocate as an American policy, to the American public.

Ugh. Still a pretty dumb idea but if the military is inviting him then so be it. I think it would be more effective if they had Sen. McCain come and talk to them. He has real experience regarding torture. Just my 2 cents.

Aside from the fact that McCain totally sold out on this issue by voting FOR the use of torture by the administration, I agree.

But the recruits aren't influenced by a real soldier and real politician. They are influenced by a fictional character played by a TV star. So perhaps it's more effective to get the TV star to talk to them.

The problem is systemic. It is not the fault of the soldiers. It is a policy matter and comes from the ADMINISTRATION.

They tried to blame Abu Ghraid on a "few bad apples," but it turns out those soldiers were just scapegoats to cover up the administration's pro-torture policies. That just shows you how much the president and his cronies really "support the troops."
