Summer in review
So, the summer is basically just about over. Time to recap all the big blockbusters/summer movies we've seen this year. TBH, I'm really dissapointed that I didn't get to see as much as I had hoped to, but it's been a really damn busy summer. I still want to see Pirates 3, Transformers, Harry Potter, and oh so many more...
But anyway, here's my assesment so far. Spider-man 3 7/10 Not nearly as bad as many people have pegged it, but not nearly as good as I hoped it could be. I'm in the category of people who put Spider-Man 2 on a pedestal, so naturally it was impossible for part 3 to be a worthy follow-up. However, this was a good movie, with good action, and impressive visual effects, as usual. Knocked Up 8/10 Jud Apatow. Seth Rogan. You really can't go wrong there. Just like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, it's a raunchy comedy but also an odyssey of personal growth. Some really funny cameos as well. Live Free or Die Hard 8/10 A PG-13/14A rating? Who gives a fuck!? This was a really entertaining flick full of great action and of course, reunites us with one of the greatest action film characters of all time: John McClane. It's the lesser of the 4 Die Hards, but I still feel it's a worthy addition to the series. 1408 7.5/10 An uncompromising supernatural thriller. This was infinitely better than I expected it to be, and I really want to see it again. Way better than many of the current thrillers that involve ghosts and hauntings, etc. You'd think something based on Stephen King would be tired, and something with John Cusack would somehow turn into a mediocre romantic comedy, but it turned out to be the surprise film of the summer for me. The Simpsons Movie 7/10 More than any other movie this summer, this was just one that I felt I had to see. There are plenty of laughs, and many unsuitable-for-TV moments that warrant this cinematic run, and it was just a fun time for me. Was it as great as the South Park movie? No. Is it as good as watching 90 minutes worth of episodes? It depends on the season. Did Albert Brooks need a better role? You betcha! Either way, I hope they make more, maybe opt for a Simpsons Trilogy. That would be sweet. I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry 6/10 There were moments when this was a better than average comedy, but other moments where cheap laughs get the priority. I especially disliked the ending, which is pretty much like any other big speech ending in a Sandler movie. Still, there is more good tha bad, and I was happy to get a chance to see this. P.S. before I even saw the movie, I had my Gene Shalit-esque blurb ready for whenever I talked about it: I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry? More like, I Now Pronounce You Chuckle and Hilarity! Superbad 8/10 Not as funny as I was hoping it would be, but maybe my expectations of going into a cardiac arrest after so much hysterical laughing was just a wee bit unrealistic. Bill hader and Seth Rogen were hilarious as the cops, and I particualry found Michael Cera to be a comedic revelation here (having only seen about 3 episodes of Arrested Development). And, then, there's that poor, poor kid, who will probably be known for the rest of his life as "McLovin." Okay, be honest. Do you know his name? Don't check IMDb!!! Do you know it? Yeah....that's right, I thought not. Me niether. So I guess I was pretty careful with my movie-going this summer, I didn't see any movie that I disliked (though it's not as if I would rush out to see Daddy Day Camp or Underdog expecting to see materpieces). I still wish I would have seen more. I've even been considering just, you know, maybe spending a whole day around a theatre and seeing as many movies as possible (though that would mean I'd be watching them alone, which I'm reluctant to do). I will also be rounding off my summer movie experience with Rob Zombie's Halloween, which seems more appealing with each TV spot I see. Last edited by Derek237; 08-30-2007 at 01:10 AM.. |

a good summer for movies
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - 7.5/10 could have been better if they just did a bit of editing (too long for no reason) The Bourne Ultimatum - 8.5/10 one of the best movies of the summer! the best of the trilogies. Sunshine - 8/10 a good movie that far to few people have seen No Reservations - 7/10 i got dragged to this one but ended up enjoing it 28 Weeks Later - 7.5/10 good but not as good as days later Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 7.5/10 five movies and not a bad one yet! Live Free or Die Hard - 8.5/10 great movie maybe my fav of the series. Knocked Up - 6/10 i dont see what the hype is about. i was entertained but left the theater with that blah feeling Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer - 7.5/10 if you liked the first one (i did) then you will like this one too Spider-Man 3 - 6/10 what a way to make a mess of a great trilogy! to much going on. i was entertainted but every time i think back on it it gets worse and worse Superbad - 7/10 i laughed the whole movie, but when i got home i could not remember why. maybe im getting old Ocean's 13 - 7/10 the worst of the three but still a fun time at the movies Mr. Brooks - 9/10 my favorite summer movie! its time people give kevin costner the respect he deserves as an actor Transformers - 8/10 good movie hope the next one is as fun,but has a better story and maybe a differnt director Shrek the Third - 7/10 a fun time but the weakest of the three Ratatouille - 8/10 disney and pixar you cant go wrong I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry- 8/10 another one of those comedies where i think its funny but later look back and cant remember what was funny. on the other hand biel in a black leather cat suit is enjoyable all on its own The Nanny Diaries 6/10 it was ok! i was dragged to it and every time the damn umbrella showed up all i could do is sing " just a spoon full of suger helps the medicine go down" sicko 8/10 i want to move to france so bad. this docu shows just how messed up america is!!! death sentence 8/10 good movie from start to finsh the only movie that i can remember i wanted to see but missed was day watch Last edited by jbar1026; 08-31-2007 at 05:37 PM.. |

The summer's been a mix of disappointing sequels and unexpected surprises with a few expected ones also.
Spider-man 3, Shrek the Third, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Live Free or Die hard, and Rush Hour 3 were not as good as their predecessors, although I still rather enjoyed the third POTC and the Die Hard installment. The only sequels I thought lived up to the others in the franchise, or were better, were Ocean's 13 and The Bourne Ultimatum; the latter probably being my favorite movie of the summer. Transformers, Mr. Brooks, The Simpsons Movie, Superbad, and Knocked Up all delivered what I'd hoped or expected: a great time at the movies. Transformers was a great popcorn movie; Mr. Brooks delivered an interesting character study with plenty of suspense and a great ending; The Simpsons Movie, Knocked Up, and Superbad were all hilarious. So, not an overall great summer, but an enjoyable one nonetheless with Bourne Ultimatum, Transformers and the comedies leading the way. Last edited by bigred760; 08-31-2007 at 01:12 AM.. |

This summer has been fickle. As I posted on my MyJoblo page, I felt that while the Summer started off pretty lousily in May-June, it ended up in July-August with a bang. Specifically:
Spider-Man 3 - 5/10. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - 5/10. Shrek The Third - 4/10. All three threequels were extremely disappointing, especially Spidey and Pirates, from which I had actually expected half-decent movies. I remember specifically getting the impression from the Pirates 3 trailer that it had a far more strictly structured plot than Pirates 2 and would be more focused. Boy was I wrong. Ratatouille - 9/10. Ocean's 13 - 7/10. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 8/10. Transformers - 7/10. The Simpsons Movie - 8/10. The Bourne Ultimatum - 9/10. As you can see, near the second half we had the best movies of the Summer come out, and it was great to see them all. Ultimately, any Summer with at least one 8/10 is a good one, but this Summer blew the past ones out of the water. 6 movies with a 7/10 or higher rating ("good" in my book), including TWO 9/10's. This in comparison with last Summer, which only had two movies that got 7/10 (Cars and Dead Man's Chest), and not even one 8/10 or 9/10. 2005 was also a good Summer - Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and some others got high marks from me. But 2007 ended up a great summer both economically and quality-wise. Best movie of the Summer: The Bourne Ultimatum. Second place: Ratatouille. Most entertaining: Transformers. Most disappointing: Spider-Man 3. Still have to see: Stardust, Knocked Up (going to see it today!), Superbad, Sicko, Live Free or Die Hard. Not particularly interested in any other releases. |
