Shaolin Soccer (Siu lam juk kau)

I saw the (region-free) DVD for this movie for sale on Ebay and was intrigued by the title and so I did some checking on imdb.com and other sources, and it looks to be kind of good.

The movie is about a shaolin kung-fu practitioner seeking a way to spread the word about his chosen art. He meets a down-on-his-luck lame ex-football player who trains him and his five brothers to play football. They form a team, and are soon entered in a prestigious tournament with a 1 million dollar prize.

Has anyone heard, read or seen anything about this film?

I LOVE THIS FILM!!!!!

I rank it up there with all my other fav Stephen Chow favourites. It will be released in North America but it will most probably be ripped to shreds. I'm just gonna buy it in Chinatown for 15 bucks and partayy!

Oh yea, you will enjoy it. It grossed more then 60 Million in Hong Kong (like over 300 million in US I believe) so you know it has to be good. I love the brank dance player and the "Bruce Lee" goalie....LOL

btw, you'll be a big fan of Stephen Chow after watching this movie, he is the shiet :-D

From some of the reviews that I've read, the style and action of the film seems to a cross between "The Matrix", "Crouching Tiger..." plus the misfit sports team makes good. I've also read that the last soccer seen has to be seen to be believed because the martial arts/socccer choreography (for lack of a better word) is incredible,

I watched the dubbed Miramax version on DVD.

Fun film. Very quirky and probably most western audiences won't "get it". But if you dig comedic HK flicks, this is highly recommended. SFX is good enough, and the action scenes are highly entertaining. Characters are also amusing and loveable.

The dubbing bothered me a bit, since here in Finland usually everything is subtitled. Also it felt that the film had been chopped down a lot, as if there were important scenes missing.

But for anyone who can appreciate cheesy, dumb fun, I'll recommend this a lot.

7/10 for the dubbed version. If I would see the original (longer?) version, it might be 8/10.

I personally thought it was bloody awful. But then again, my hatred for Stephen Chow and his antics might have had something to do with it. I was mildly interested at the beginning but then it just got annoying, and for me, it's ANYTHING but fun. 4/10

If I said it didn't look interesting...I'd be lying. I don't know if I'll ever get around to renting it so my best hope is to catch it on amovie channell sometime.

I saw this movie a year or two ago and was very impressed by it. Think Matrix style action in a soccer type movie. It had some very funny moments, good soccer action, and kickass special effects.
Definitely worth seeing.

Wow, interesting to see this thread come back to life after such a long time. FWIW, I did get the DVD about two (three?) years ago and loved the movie.

Netflix'ed it recently....

I thought it was lame for the first 30 minutes...but once they actually started with the soccer, it was quite enjoyable.

I really like how they have no bones about who the bad guys are. They're named "Team EVIL". Yeah.

Very enjoyable film, but a lot of people don't like HK-style humor, so be aware of that.

8/10 from me. The soccer scenes are definetly the best parts of the film.

The DVD is really top-notch when you buy the Hong Kong release with the terribly translated subtitles.

Every line's unintentionally hilarious.

Just saw this movie. Wow, that's one of the funniest most creative things I have ever seen. It was so totally EXtreme! Loved the odd tricks they do "The hyper cyber uber ultra transforming into fiery animal" shot was the funniest thing I've seen.

Top notch comedy.

I love Shaolin Soccer (7.5/10), which is a big surprise to me because I usually don't like stupid-slapsticky type comedies like this one.

I was even more surprised when I saw [url=http://kcmsterpce.com/reviews/kungfuhustle.html]Kung Fu Hustle[url] and liked it even MORE than this one! Yikes!
Go go Stephen Chow!

Very good movie. As is his Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer blends humor, kickass action (in the form of soccer), and great special effects. Definitely recommend it.

I had heard about Shaolin Soccer a while back and thought it was some corny shit. But then I went to see Kung Fu Hustle and loved it. So when I saw Shaolin Soccer on cable, I had to watch it. I gotta tell you, it was not what I expected, which is a good thing. It's not as good as Kung Fu Hustle, in my opinion, but it is a really good movie. You guys should check it out.

Alrato!
