(VIDEO) Ferris Bueler's Day Off (9/10)
My cousin introduced this to me a few years back. It has grown into one of my favorite movies of all time. And it's high on the list. I couldn't choose if it was a 10 or a 9 because Joblo got rid of the .5 ratings. So I just stayed with 9.
Ever want to ditch school? you should have answered yes before you finished reading that sentence. This movie shows how one kid, Ferris Bueler (Mattew Broderick) ditches school and has a hell of a time. Now we all know that having that much fun is impossible. Simply because there are one too many assholes in the city (as the movie showed one in the fancy reseraunt). Bueler takes his friend Fry (Alan Ruck) and his girl friend (Mia Sara) along for the ride. The movie works on so many levels from flat out comedy to thoughtful scenes to coincidental occurrences (one too many big words in one sentence there!). The characters in the movie are exactly what real people are like. Some may say that Ferris bueler is a little over the top. But you try being stuck in a high school for four years and deal with all the shit that the people bring up these days. The best character is easily Fry. You feel so sorry for him throughout the movie. They even have him encounter a big problem that actually fixes his life. he is just so damn funny. He makes the sounds out of his mouth, and does the mr. peterson voice that has you rolling because of the way he looks. Damn this movie is fun. The greatest thing is that Ferris Bueler's Day Off isn't one of those shitty teen flicks that come out these days. It actually is smart, isn't filled with those pathetic gross out jokes, and is just fun from start to finish. you can relate to it soo damn well. "9 Times" This is one of the most enjoyable movies I've seen. I never tire of it. It's just so damn terrific to watch what happens to Bueler and his friends when they steal the ferrari (oooh mama!) and hit the road. Now for the people who have seen this, hopefully everybody, your wondering why I left out the principal. The guy who brings laughs by just glaring through a hole in the fence. And I can't remember his name. He was in Beetlejuice and in Sleepy Hollow. I'm too lazy to find out. But he is terrific in this film. The art scene in Ferris Bueler's Day Off is a big step in this movie. It's really damn deep. Very deep considering that this is a comedy. The way it's masterfully directed by John Hughs, makes it seem like something that even fricken Kubrick would use. Or maybe I take that scene too seriously. if you haven't seen it...see it now. This movie is just so amazing. I may like it a little too much, but when a person like me sees a movie more then 20 times and loves it each time, then it's terrific. Remember (as I posted somewhere else) I like to experience movies and blabla bla... "It could get bumped, scratched, breathed on wrong, a bird could shit one it" "no ferris, you don't understand. He doesn't drive it. He just rubs it with a diaper!" "que bella!" |

Damn looks like I'll be skipping friends and survivor tonight and popping in Ferris Bueller. I have never ever ran into a person who didn't just like Ferris, but loved it. Seriously it has to be one of the most timeless movie that I can think of.
People here will likely want to slay me for bring up the "s" word here, but I'd love to see a sequal to this movie. I have to know how Ferris and SLoan turned out. I want to know what Ferris is doing today. I guess ideally we should wait another ten years or so when Ferris and SLoan are raising Ferris Jr. I'd look forward to that more than Episode II or the Matrix sequals. |

No please! for the sake of humanity! no more sequels. I'm sequeled out. Just hearing about an American Psycho sequel killed me.
And if they even try to make a sequel to Ferris Bueler's Day Off...John Hughs better be with it. |

"Ferris" was definetly one of the best comedys ever made, and i agree a sequal would make a very interesting movie!

Actually, back in 95', I read an article in EW with Matthew Broderick, and he said that him and John Hughes were discussing a sequel, and it sounded really cool:
Ferris is an adult and takes a day off of work! I'd pay eight bucks! Oh, the actor who plays the principal is Jeffery Jones. |

When I look back at myself when I'm old and decaying, the movie I'll remember most about being a kid is probably this one. It is the only movie where I can actually laugh at high school. For some reason, when I'm there, I can only put a smug look on my face, then for a split-second putting a smile on when I pass someone in the hall I know. I seriously cannot imagine anyone my age being able to hate or not like this movie. Its all about fun and getting back at the adults you despise most of the time (or some of the time anyway).
The opening 30 minutes or so is probably the funniest chunk of the film, with jokes GALORE, poking fun at teachers, students, parents; just about anything you could make fun of. Although I will admit, this film is not perfect in any way whatsoever, and actually has many flaws, and places where it could've been better. But, coming from an everyday high schooler, this has got to be one of the best movies I've seen, that I can actually relate to, especially Cameron, who is a spitting image of me--the kid who's always depressed, too bad I don't have cool friends like Ferris to entertain me on occasions. And that is my main reason for liking the movie so much, its like a fantasy come true. My all time favorite section of the film comes when the Trio visits the museum, all the way through the parade, where Ferris sings (or should I say Lip-Sync's) on the float. The museum is a serious scene, but so serious that it mocks philosophical scenes in movies, and seems to get funnier each time I see it (especially when Cameron looks closer and closer at that painting), but I also like the music that goes with it too. The parade scene where Ferris sings is the climax of the movie, and I wanted to stand up and dance with them. I get the tendency to everytime (am I a geek or what?). I would like to thank the man John Hughes for creating one of the most memorable characters in movie history, and one of the most enjoyable films I've ever seen. And since he gets much credit for this flick, I would like give kudos for making another one of my favorites, THE BREAKFAST CLUB, a year earlier. He created two of my personal favorite films that I relate to, and can come back to more than just once. Thank you much, Mr. Hughes. And I would like to quote one of my favorite lines (from Ferris) that easily sums up the whole point of the movie: "I said it before and I'll say it again, life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop to look around once in awhile, you could miss it." [big grin] and my favorite quote from Cameron, as he sits in his car trying to decide what to do: "He'll keep calling me, he'll keep calling me, he'll keep calling me until I come over. He'll make me feel guily. This is uh... This is ridiculous, ok I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go, I'll go. What-- I'LL GO. Shit. [pounds on passenger seat] GOD-DAMMIT!" ****1/2 out of five or (9/10) [This message has been edited by Fergus (edited 06-27-2002).] |

This and Breakfast Club are also my favorite teen movies. They both captured what high school life is like. Its not all sex and drugs and parties like in American Pie. In some ways it is, but it never was for me. My life was more like these 2 movies. This movie is also great for quoting.
"Ferris Bueller your my hero". Cubs game on the T.V.: "Whats the score?" "Nothing to nothing" "Who's winning?" "The Bears". "Pardon my french, but Cameron is so tight that if you stuck a lump of coal up his ass, in 2 weeks, you'd have a diamond." |

The best line in this movie to use for quoting:
"It's understanding that makes it possible for people like us able to tolerate a person like yourself." |

So, I guess this movie's a little overrated I finally saw it today, and yeah, I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a particularly outstanding comedy. And it definitely isn't the best John Hughes movie, for sure. There were some funny parts, and I liked Matthew Broderick's role, and the roles of the other actors. And it is a very accurate portrayal of high school, but in the end, this movie just didn't really jump out and grab me the way it does for other people.
My Rating: 6/10 |
