Exotica (9/10)
The cover of the dvd/vhs for Exotica looks a lot like one for a porno, and if you rent it for that reason fine by me, but its definitely not one, theres no sex at all, but taking place in a strip club, you do get some female nudity. Now thats outta the way, Exotica is hard to explain, the characters are a stripper, a DJ, a tax auditor and a gay pet store owner. The movie unravels to show how closely these characters are connected. What I loved about the film is how you think most of these people are sick-o's at first and the secrets that will eventually be revealed about them will be related to sex but it goes beyond the sexuality of the film to reveal something more truthful, and quite depressing.
The performances are great. Mia Kirshner (New Best Friend 5/10, Not Another Teen Movie 7/10) is an interesting actress to watch and here she gives her role as the stripper an innocence which is critical to the movie. Bruce Greenwood (Disturbing Behavior 6/10) is also very good.
If your in the mood for a dark character study (with a haunting, beautiful score that I have to mention) rent EXOTICA.
