Bones
Bones- 8/10
Genre: Horror Year: 2001 Rating: US R/ Can 18A for Tons of Brutal Gore, Nudity and Graphic Violence. Director: Ernest Dickerson Cast: Snoop Dogg Pam Grier Bianca Lawson Plot: Jimmy Bones (Snoop Dogg) was brutally killed by a group of people including some close to him. He was buried along with his name and now he’s trying to get out of the spirit world and into the world of the living to exact his revenge. My Thoughts: This is blaxpoitation at it’s best! I never thought I’d see the day when it came back but here’s the proof. Blaxploitation is a sub-genre long thought dead from back in the 70’s and early 80’s. It features African American men and women in an exploitation setting. It was the African American answer to all the purely white movies coming out. Those movies us horror fans have come to love are neglectful of African American men/women. There was a huge boom of African American actors that were given jobs in horror flicks but they always seemed to die off first (or at least one of the first). Fortunately, African American’s created blaxploitation which consisted mainly of African American actors getting butchered. One might argue that that in itself is just as bad as what the white folks were dealing to the horror crowd but remember, this was a response to those films. To this day African American actors aren’t given enough screen time in films. Bones is one of the few large budget horror flicks of the past few years to sport a mostly African American cast. Bones may have it’s flaws (weak acting, script problems) but it’s undeniably enjoyable and is a worthy horror movie in the genre. I hope to see more movies like this one made in the future. Acting- 6/10 I love Pam Grier, she’s a phenomenal actress but isn’t given enough screen time here. Snoop Dogg is awesome once he’s in spirit form but I didn’t really think he did the 70’s part all that well. Katherine Isabelle is great as usual but she also doesn’t get too much screen time. Bianca is very strong as the strange and angelic daughter of Pam Grier; I dug her performance. Directing- 9/10 Here’s the movie’s second strongest point (the first being the gore). Amazing atmosphere, excellent pace (with hardly any downtime), wicked sets and he gives the audience what they want. Gore- 10+ ***Gore Hall of Fame*** Gunshot wound on dog that quickly disappears, tons of blood and chunks land on a dude, ripped off jaw, lots of blood, very gory rejuvenation, blood galore, extremely bloody gunshot wounds, bloody multiple stabbing, someone is torn to shreds (very bloody and graphic), more kick ass rejuvenation, guts are pulled out by canine, maggot vomit, ripped off hand, gory slit throat, slit throat, tons of blood splatter, tons of spurting blood, multiple explicit impaling with spurting slit throat, decapitated head, bloody stabbing, another decapitation, someone’s ripped up, chopped off arm and lots of gooey spirits. Nudity- 7/10 Bianca in completely see-through shirt, lots of scantily clad women, hooker shows her butt and breasts. Matt AxeHorror©=Copyright |

Not a bad movie, and I agree that Pam Grier is great. I remember her from the 70's blaxploitation movies, and I'm glad to see her in movies again.

Bones is lopsided, but it's entertaining. Dickerson directs with panache, the cast is solid, and we get abundant cranberry sauce (although the blood resembles orange paint). The camped up third act is a downer, though (talking heads???). I'm surprised that there haven't been talks of direct-to-video sequels yet. Jimmy Bones has the potential to be a respectable cult icon. He'd be right up there with Jack Frost!

Pam Grier rules, but even though she's the 70's kick ass queen, I liked her better in the present tense of Bones rather than the flashbacks.

Heres my thoughts on Bones
It began...well, very promising. I thought the acting was pretty good. The scenes were done pretty well. The movie actually *gasp* had an eerie feeling to it. Everything about this movie was rocking..... UNTIL..... Bones came alive. Then the movie went downhill. The began so good - then it seemed like 2 different directors were making the same movie. When Bones came up we were hit in the face with non-humurous comedy, lame child-horror stunts like the talking heads, ridiculous looking blood, unimaginative as hell kills. And couldn't he stalk a little when killing? Give us any suspense AT ALL? Nothing??? ![]() The first part of this movie - 4/5 The second part of this movie 1.5/5 |

I dig this movie. Not great, but really fun and it serves as a good homage to 70s horror films. Ernest Dickerson has done 2 good horror films and i hope he does more.

Just saw Bones last night and was pleasantly surprised...
It's a good film with quite a lot of gore (always good!!) and a pretty good storyline... however, although Snoop Dogg's acting was v.good, at times it made me laugh because he was all Ghetto Pimp looking and stuff. In all, I'd give it 7/10. I was pretty p*ssed however, at the appearance of the blood they used!! It looked more like strawberry smoothie as opposed to blood!!! -ED- |

The reason for the bright blood was because Dickerson wanted to simulate the look of the blood used back in the 70s which was brighter than what is used now. Some of that has to do with the blood mixture itself and some has to do with the film stock used in the 70s.

I found Bones to be very enjoyable. I seriously had my doubts. But then again how bad it can it be. It had the beautiful, sexy, talented...Pam Grier. 8/10

Bones was a fun movie, despite it's cheesier, over-directed moments. I liked the flashbacks that showed Bones as a personna pre-mortem and Pam Gier is always a blast to watch. I wonder if people who take hip-hop serious really go and see every movie that's designed for a hip-hop audience, maybe something like : "Hey, that movie stars Snoop! It's a horrormovie but it could be cool!" or rather "Hey it's a horrormovie and it stars Snoop! Could be cool!".
Anybody got any news on a sequel? I thought this one had quite some franchise potential. |

I never found interest in Bones, it seemed gimmicky celebrity exploitation from the previews but I guess I will have a look now with some of the positive praise it is getting.

"Bones" 2001
Directed by: Ernest R. Dickerson ("Demon Knight") Written by: Adam Simon ("Carnosaur"), Tim Metcalfe ("Fright Night Part 2") Starring: Snoop Dogg, Pam Grier ("Scream Blacula Scream"), Bianca Lawson ("Dead and Breakfast") Tagline: This Dogg's Got a Bone to Pick Rating: 3/10 Plot: Four kids refurbish an old building to turn it into a hot nightclub. This building, however, was the stronghold (and resting place) of the infamous Jimmy Bones, the neighborhood gangster with a heart of gold. His body still lies in the basement after he was betrayed and murdered. His ghost gets pissed off at being disturbed and goes on a rampage of revenge. Review: "Bones" is a heart-breaking film. The film oozes a fun 70s vibe and features a hot cast but blows it all with a CGI orgasm that makes it just laughable. It's always much easier to tolerate a bad movie if it has no chance of entertaining you. The plotline is the ghost story seeking revenge. Instead of pissed off Indian spirits or a reclusive insane millionaire, though, our spirit is none other than Snoop Dogg. His Jimmy Bones character was like the Godfather of his 70s hood. This is a unique and fun twist and provides the audience with a fun anti-hero. Snoop Dogg drips a cool essence throughout and is excellent in his flashback scenes. As a killer...not so much. It must be said, though, that his performance is overshadowed by numerous horrible effects. The kids and the nightclub are almost tertiary in the script. Basically they serve as bodies to be dispatched and nothing more. The characters with more emotion are the ones who betrayed Jimmy all those years ago and now are being stalked. They are all adequately depicted again until horrible crazy effects set in. The film has a horrible "Jeepers Creepers" feel to it for me. The beginning of the movie has a great edge to it and a slow building storyline. Then at one point all that is tossed out the window when someone decided to go overboard on cheap CGI effects. Are the effects really that bad? At one point we have a dog with a maggot cannon for a mouth. If that's not bad enough we have a character being spun around like a top by spirits or decapitated heads spitting out one-liners. That mood that the filmmakers were producing just went out the window. The film also features some of the worst computer animated fire effects I've ever seen. I think I could do better with construction paper and a glue stick. The gore does look good. The reanimation of Jimmy Bones has a slick feel to it. There is a lot of blood to keep gorehounds glued to the screen even if it looks like syrupy kool aid a lot of the time. The dog consumption of a human scene is especially notable. "Bones" is another in a long line of films with great potential that sell out to CGI. You can almost pinpoint the time in the film where they either ran out of story or our of patience. They just mailed in the rest of it and turned it over to the effects folks. One of these days (probably after you and I quit paying to watch this shit) they'll return to the theory that mood and story make the movie. |

Good until Bones comes alive. I was pleasantly surprised by Snoop Dog's performance. I thought he was actually suitably menacing and charismatic on screen. I'd give it the movie a 5/10. |
