The world's laziest cat had a good reason to get off his ass this past weekend as GARFIELD perched on top of the charts. The Bill Murray voiced feline collected a cool $2,016,197 over the weekend, taking its total to $2,254,100 (US $23,156,822), taking its Advance Screening run into account. Though being critically lampooned, it took advantage of the school holiday frame and its target audience are an undemanding bunch, and it's most likely to have a reasonable hold, though SHARK TALE will certainly be a big draw. But if the similarly targeted Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed and The Cat In The Hat can manage totals of $10,747,878 and $9,879,054 respectively, and they opened with lower numbers, then the future is looking good for Garfield. Anothy pussy putting their paw imprint in the charts is CATWOMAN. The Halle Berry action vehicle rounded up $1,030,489 (US $10,586,420) over the weekend, marking it as Berry's 11th Highest Grossing film already. The Sharon Stone accompanied comic book flick won't be making X2 type numbers ($16,444,180 for the star, and will most likely struggle to match her last cinematic outing Gothika ($4,613,947), but time will tell how many lives this Cat has. Tom Hanks slipped 37% over the weekend, but still held onto the 5th spot with his stay in THE TERMINAL. The Steven Spielberg directed comedy/drama has raked in an underwhelming $2,562,202 (US $26,322,016) after 2 weeks in release. Jennifer Garner continues a good hold in the Top 10 with her comedy fantasy SUDDENLY 30, sitting at #6 in its third week of release. All up she's scored $4,866,297 (US $49,992,447), coming up close to its equivalent US run total. Off from the #2 debut and $1,290,842 the original earned in its first week in 2001, the disney sequel THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT settled for a debut at #8 this week. The Anne Hathaway starrer scored $662,000 (US $6,800,859) all up. The plethora of kiddie aimed entertainment pretty much followed one after the other in the lower half of the charts, with THUNDERBIRDS, HOME ON THE RANGE, and YU-GI-OH! debuting at #9, #11 and #13 respectively. The live action Bill Paxton number managed $444,078 (US $4,562,102), the farm themed animated comedy with $224,160 (US $2,302,840), and the anime outing with $124,832 (US $1,282,424). Falling hard over the weekend, despite it being in the right category to appeal to the school holiday frame, the Jackie Chan actioner AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS dropped 71% down 9 places to #16. After 4 weeks, it has a poor $1,632,901 (US $16,775,120) under its belt.

THIS WEEK (September 23rd): Hilary Duff gets her fairytale; and that comedy starring that Asian guy from American Pie and that Indian guy from Van Wilder.
