Baywatch moves closer to big screen

Baywatch, the Californian saga which captivated television viewers for 13 years with its scantily-clad lifeguards, took a step closer towards big screen reality yesterday with news that two of Hollywood's top writers are in talks to adapt the screenplay.

DreamWorks executives have been eager to rush the project into development ever since paying more than $1m (£531,000) late last year for remake rights for the show which, in its early 90s heyday, was the world's most popular TV programme.

The studio wants to release the picture in summer 2006 and signing Jay Scherick and David Ronn would be a major coup. The pair scripted the recent US number one picture Guess Who, a comedy remake of 1967's Guess Who's Coming To Dinner that starred Sidney Poitier.

Baywatch centred on the experiences of a southern California beach patrol under the avuncular supervision of David Hasselhoff. The series, sometimes referred to as Bikiniwatch, ran from 1989-2001 and also starred Pamela Anderson, Erika Eleniak, and Parker Stevenson.

As Conan O'Brien once suggested, when somebody tucks their stomach in after they take their shirt off, it should be referred to as Hasselhoffing, or to Hasselhoff, if you will.

I'm sure he'll be welcomed cordially after his BRILLIANT and OSCAR-WORTHY cameo in Sponge Bob Square Pants. Hmm, maybe Sponge Bob can do a cameo in the Baywatch movie too.

I have a feeling this movie is going down, unless they really attach the best crew to the project. I heard Spielberg bought it's rights or something, but he's not going to direct it. I wonder who will.
