Christian Bale can NOT act!!!!!!!!!

I see a lot of love going out for Bale, and I don't see why. he is horrible and ruins every movie he is in. Let me go down the list here.

American Psyco - 3/10 - A great plot, a horrible lead. Christian bale was stiff through the entire thing, on top of that he always look like he has to take an enormous shit.

Equilibrium - 0/10 - I got through about 20 minutes of this movie. Maybe it's the whole plot that sucks, but still GOOD actors should be able to make a shitty script good.

The Machinist - 4/10 - he lost a lot of weight for the movie, so much weight it was considered dangerous. I'll give him that, but losing weight and gaining it for movies does NOT make you a good actor. This story could have been great, even better then fight club. But Bale had to go and ruin it. Way too many facial expressions for one sit down.

Batman Begins - 4/10 - To think i was actually giving Bale the benifit of the doubt, and helf high hopes for BB. With JoBlo giving it a decent review, and other critics giving it GREAT reviews i thought this one was in the bag. But nooooo! Bale Bale Bale, the guy just can't act. He was by far the worst batman to ever grace the screen. And again, the story was great, the orgin of batman would be awesome if it wasn't centered around Bale. God this guy sucks ass.

That's all i've seen with bale in it, and it's all i will see.

Christian Bale was brilliant in American PsycHo. He was "stiff?" I am not sure what your definition of stiff is, but my contention is that he was supposed to be "stiff" in this role. He was a perfectionist, and wanted to have the best of everything, and have everyone like him. Any time he did not have the best (say the AWESOME business card scene) he was uneasy (stiff). I think he played the role to perfection...and most other people agree. I think you missed the boat on his performance in American Psycho. Now if you don't mind, I have to go return some tapes.

Have you read the book? He played Bateman pretty much perfectly.

All of Bale's performances that I have seen have been exceptional. I'm sure BB will be no different.

Wow, he played Patrick Bateman to a tee. Next time you're going to make a statement about a movie, read the book first to see how the character is chararterized. As for Equilibrium...another great performance. I could feel what he was going through as he evolved from a human being without feeling to someone who could care about things. The Machinist is another great movie. Not Bale's best performance ever, but he was solid and the movie itself was exceptional. I'm really looking forward to seeing Batman tomorrow night. I can't imagine who you think CAN act if you think Christian Bale can't. By the way Bale was also quite good in the slightly above average Reign of Fire. For that matter Bale was really the only part of the movie Shaft I enjoyed as well.

American Psycho 10/10
Equlibrium 8/10
The Machinist 8/10
Reign of Fire 6/10

American Psycho is a piece of shit of a movie. It's really horrible IMO and Bale gives a terrible performance in the movie.

Having said that, I think Bale is actually a fine actor. I liked him in Shaft and Reign of Fire. Those weren't great performances but he was decent. However, it's Batman Begins that sealed the deal with me. I thought he was absolutely superb in Batman. He's the best Bruce Wayne/Batman, and that's hard for me to admit because I was such a HUGE fan of Michael Keaton's work in the first two Batman movies. But I do have to admit, Bale gives the best performance as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Agreed... EXTREMELY over-rated pile of shite in my mind... Was just boring, and I won't say that Bale didn't do his job and play the character well, cuz I'm sure he did (never read the book)... But this movie was an HUGE disappointment after all the internet hype I've read about it...

I LOVED The Machinist, brilliant flick... Can't wait to see Batman Begins too!

Eh, I'm in extreme disagreeance (is this a word) with this rant.

Bale is awesome. Actually, when you take awesome and cube it, and then subtract 6, thats how awesome Christian Bale is.

I mean come on.

Let's get serious now.

Christian Bale is the balls.

Bale:Damn you! I CAN ACT! Damn You!!!!!!

Before I do a rundown of Bale's film credits, IMO He CAN ACT! The roles he has taken on is a wide assortment. There will be some flicks that he has done makes ya wonder why did you take that and some that he was tailor made.....

As for the 3 flicks (BTW he has done much MORE mmmmkay )

American Psycho - It was a ummmmm INTERESTING movie from 2000. Thank goodness Leo passed cuz I can't picture Titanic boy as a killer. The only downside was the last 20 minutes. I felt it just got sloppy towards the end.

Equilibrium - Yes its a rip of The Matrix but so what...

The Machinist - Have yet to see this but I will check it out in the near future...

Empire Of The Sun - A 10/10 movie but egh.... maybe I need to watch this a few times to get into it....

Newsies - A so so movie disney musical... A one time rarity to see Bale break out into a dance number...

Swing Kids - A good movie IMO that went under the radar

Velvet Goldmine - A wild and trippy flick, id rate it a 6/10

A Midsummer's Night Dream - Bale was pretty much the reason why I went to see this. May not be everyones cup of tea being its a Shakespeare Movie.

Shaft - He plays the bad guy that really needs to be taken out. A 7/10 rating from moi...

Captain Corelli's Mandolin - I dunno, could not get into this flick. A mere 4/10 though the movie focused on Cruz & Cage...

Laurel Canyon - 7/10

Reign of Fire - 7/10

and finally BATMAN BEGINS! I have yet to see this and its on my hit list of movie to see at the theaters which I plan to do on my next day off from work.

i disagree with this rant, IMO he is a very good actor, he was great in American Psycho, and after reading the book he portrayed the character perfectly
he was also great in Equilibrium and Reign of Fire
although i hated Empire of the Sun after watching some of it again he was also good in that

i need to see more of his films

I have yet to find a movie that he's in that I don't like. American Psycho, Reign of Fire, The Machinist, and now Batman Begins. All these were good or even great - mostly because of his performance. I think he's the best Bruce Wayne to grace the movies and probably the second best Batman (Keaton was better).

Don't see where you're coming from the Pokey.

I have a question: Christian Bale is Welsh, yet every interview I've seen lately with him (for BB and The Machinist) he talks with an "American" accent. Has he lost his original accent, sort of like Mel Gibson or Anthony LaPaglia?

Just curious.

In an interview he once stated that he dropped the accent, atleast in America, so people don't go: "Batman is British?" LoL. His choice, really.

One of my buddies wanted to see the Machinest (which was a blind buy) so i brought it over to his house, had a few hours to kill and watched it. He thought it was fucking great and I really don't see why.

JUST BECAUSE BALE LOST A TON OF WEIGHT, DOES NOT MEAN HE DID A GOOD ACTING JOB.

I mean seriously, this guy gives you a dumb, not needed facial expression every 2 fucking minutes.

Please Machinest lovers, tell me why the movies is so fuckin great.

Not because of Bale really although I did like his performance other then the weight loss. It was just a solid screenplay. Everything was so surreal, and I felt sucked into Trevor's own little world. I found it clever how the finale was executed, and didn't feel cheated in the least. It was nice to see everything come together like that. After a repeat viewing other little things start to fall in place and you start to see subtle little hints. Definitely a good movie. The weight loss by Bale just added to the character because if someone didn't sleep for a year they would lose a hell of a lot of weight. It was necessary for the plot to be believeable. Imagine not sleeping for a year....what would become your reality, and more importantly would things become so distorted that your reality would indeed be your imagination. The Machinist delves into something that is actually believeable and handles it quite well.

The Machinist 8/10

Believeable? Not in the least bit... and from my point of view that is due to Christian bale. With bale he never makes anything feel real, it never hits home with him... it's always just blah.

I disagree, do you expect someone who hasn't slept in a year to be bouncing off the walls. How real was it supposed to feel, when it wasn't real at all? I think Bale gets flack because of some of the roles he takes. He plays them perfectly, but people complain he shows a lack of emotion. With The Machinst, Equilibrium, and American Psycho that's kind of the point. Everyone however is entitled to their own opinion, and I can respect the way you feel.

I think, if anyone has seen Empire of the Sun, that it can be agreed that Christian Bale is not a bad actor. In fact, based on that film, he gave one of the best performances for a younger actor EVER. He's been really solid in roles since then, but watch that and tell me he's not giving it his all, emotionally.

Empire of the Sun - 5/10

I give it the best score for a bale film then any of his others, but he still annoyed me in it.

I didn't make the thread to try to convince people that he sucks, i just wanted to blow off a little steam, I respect everybodys views good and bad, I just wanted to hear a little reasoning for why they liked him.

I think it really does come down to whether or not you like the characters or the movies he plays in. As said by many, his performance in American Psycho was very cohesive to how the character was written.

That's my problem with Bale -- most of the movie he's in don't interest me. American Pyscho was good to me, and I really have trouble stomaching ellis stories because the characters are so damned unlikable.

The bad: Christian Bale seems to have a one-track forced American voice that perpetually sounds like Agent Smith.

The good: I dug that voice in American Psycho. I forgot about it 15 minutes after he opens his mouth for the first time in The Machinist.

The Machinist kept me thinking. The dialogue of the film was spectacular. The visuals were astounding, as were the motifs throughout the film. I found it to be a mentally intriguing film that opened in a most peculiar and vividly interesting way.

Well, nice to hear that, because it came off sounding that way to me.

Anyway, i think Bale is a great actor, he's proven it many times over(in my opinion of course as if i have to mention it), all of his performances have felt real to me, i guess that's a matter of perception as you clearly thought otherwise.
And seeing as he's only 31 years old, he's got an entire career ahead of him.
