Saddest Horror Films.

Who could've guessed that Horror Films could be genuinely touching, even tear-enducing? I sure didn't, but I know there are plenty out there. Here are the saddest Horror Films I've seen.

1.) Candyman: I just couldn't stop crying at the end.

2.) Candyman 2: Farewell To The Flesh: A bleak, depressive pall hangs over the film from the first frame to the final credit.

3.) Alien 3: Havin' a good day? This movie will change that!

4.) Godzilla: King of The Monsters: A very downbeat film about the horror of nuclear annihilation, culminating with the death of a good man & the destruction of what was, in the end, just a simple animal doing only what came naturally.

5.) Bubba Ho-Tep: Laugh all you want, but this film really got to me in ways I can't explain (though the absolutely beautiful score was a primary factor).

HONORABLE MENTION: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of The Sith: I didn't cry or even actually get sad, but I was honestly touched at how everything fell apart for The Republic, The Jedi, & especially Anakin.

So how 'bout you guys? Don't be embarassed--sorrow & sadness are perfectly normal human emotions.

Ill post one some people might take issue with.

Shawn of the Dead.

******************SPOILERS!******************

..when Shawns mother died...and how she died.

I think that since all the other deaths had abit of a comedic element to them, that while sad, u could laugh at the same time but her death kinda made me squirm for some reason FAR more so then many straight up horror movies have ever.

Thats why i loved the movies so much, the variety of emotions it could bring fourth in the viewer was uncanny.

The only film that makes me sad is The Crow. The beautiful ending combined with Brandon Lee's death gets me everytime.

Both Jacob's Ladder & Pet Semetary(while being some of my all time favs) are 2 extremely creepy and disturbing films, they're also relentlessly somber/depressing to the point were it can have a harsh effect on one's otherwise decent day.

CHRONOS has a sad ending, You might not cry, but you can really feel for the vampire. it is a great film.

The '98 remake of Godzilla was beyond sad, especially the ending:.

Spoiler:

When Godzilla is trapped, tied up and shot to death in a long sequence, I felt this was bordering on sadistic. I suppose as any defenseless creature is slowly or systematically killed. Not exciting, not scary,. I just felt very sorry for the poor thing. The whole film is just plain bad.

Donnie Darko is the only one that really has me down at the end. So the rest of my list will be scenes.

SPOILERS!!

Shawn Of The Dead has 2 scenes for me. Like Shockwave said Shawns mother was one and the scene when Shawn is saying good bye to Ed.

Dawn Of The Dead (orginal) Peter killing Rodger.

NOTLD (68) the ending

thats all I can think of and I just noticed that zombie movies are sad.

Shawn of the Dead.
Totally agreed. I wasn't expecting that movie to have a sad moment. And the actors just do so well and it's delivered with such a ballsy punch.

Some that got me bad:

Dark Water (original). The finale was extremely EXTREMELY depressing.
End of Evangelion. The entire third impact scene.
Ginger Snaps. Who wouldn't agree the ending is heartbreaking.
It. Probably because of the book. The movie itself isn't very sad.
Donnie Darko. The last scene.
May. Shattering finale.

Good call with "May", Night. Definitely a sad movie.

i would like to add the depressing as hell yet brilliant "The Machinist" to this list. Amazing film, and the depressing ending both horrified and saddened me. I thought about this movie for days afterward, and that hasn't happened in awhile.

Halloween 4 and 5 , I just feel so so sorry for the kids after seeing their friends get dismantled by the unstopable killing machine, lol noo..

Actually, Pet Semetary is probably the only horror movie that I think is sad, due mostly to it's depressing tone.

Angel Heart
Jacob's Ladder

I think the sadness comes from the revelations at the end of each film, because both have kinda similar endings...

SPOILER!

...even if you do see the Angel Heart one coming from far off, the sequence over the credits with Mickey Rourke descending into "Hell" in the elevator is awesomely sad. I think so anyway.

Eraserhead saddens me. Forget the weirdness and the disturbing aspects, at a base level Henry's girlfriend leaves him and then he is left knowing he will never ever have the affection of the beautiful woman across the hall. Loss and rejection right there folks. Contemplation of and the act of Suicide too, if you want to take a possible symbolic thingy standpoint.

28 Days Later gets a mention too, mainly due to the Brian Eno track in the middle of the film though.

If only the upcoming version of Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" could capture the sadness of the book, I would be astounded.

Underworld is the only horror movie to ever make me cry. I felt so sad, primarily for myself, because I had to watch it. I almost felt that bad over Last House on the Left, as well, but fortunately I watched that right after my girlfriend and I had broken up, and I was drinking heavily at the time, so I was kind of in a drunken haze through a lot of it. Yes, that's right, being dumped and then drinking alcohol to drown your own misery is an uplifting experience when compared to watching Last House of the Left. And it's positively like a blowjob from Sarah Michelle Gellar when compared to watching Underworld.

I'll go with everyone with Jacobs Ladder, Bubba Ho Tep, Pet Semetary, The Crow.
SPOILERS!!!!
But the only horror film that almost made me cry was Shaun of the Dead.
At the end when Shaun is saying good bye to Ed and they lean forward and touch heads. OH God that almost got me! As a matter of fact that flick is one sad fucking movie. The scene were Phillip dies is touching until the joke. Shauns mom, and Ed. I've never seen a movie with so much range of emotion and actually have it work. I love Shaun of the Dead.

I thought Willard (remake) was a pretty sad flick. I actually felt bad for the character and thought Crispin Glover did an awesome portrayal. His scenes involving Socrates were especially touching. One thing that ruined it was the ending. Just seemed like a cheap way to leave it open for a sequel. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Minus Man (More of a bizarre mystery/thriller, but still had a creepy and weird vibe to it. Plus it's sad as hell. Brian Cox's character in particular.)

Not exactly horror but I do consider the ending of Terminator 2 to be pretty sad. "I can not self terminate" and "I know now why you cry... but it is something I can never do" are two lines that sadden me whenever I watch the film. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Not even gonna front...I remotely get wet around the eyes STILL to this day with that scene. Damn you T2,damn you and these allergies to hell.

For the man who pointed out Bubba-Ho Tep as a bit depressing,I'd agree with that as well, something weird/unique about it brings a rather dark but amusing sadness.

The only sad horror movie I can think of is Pet Semetary. The kid dying in the beginning and his father's futile attempts to get him back and the elimination of his family and the subsequent pathetic attempts that the father tried to get things to the way they were are pretty sad.

EDIT:How weird. I went up a few post and saw that I replied to this topic nearly two years ago. My answer was the same

Hmm

Dawn of the Dead remake

Prince of Darkness (Carpenter's)--I didn't expect that ending, and I'm not going to spoil it for those who haven't seen it.

May

Wendigo--the movie itself bored the crap out of me, but I really like the actor who played the dad, who also was a major character in the Dawn of the Dead remake.

Although I have never seen it I have heard that The Fly can be a pretty emotional film. I checked this thread but I didn't see it listed. I bought it today so I will see for myself. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

The Fly actually has quite a few emotional moments. If you can put past the fact that a woman really can't still be in love with something that looks like whatever Goldblum ended up as in The Fly, the end of the movie will leave you in near tears.

Paperhouse is a pretty damper film that was released in the late 80's. Directed by Bernard Rose who made Candyman.

I agree about T2. That ending still gets me a little to this day.

Most recent, id say Shawn of the Dead.

When the mother, the father in law, and the best friend died. Those were such great characters! Its strange how i cared more for them in a horror/comedy then most straight up drama ive seen recent years.

...the part where the father in law shuts the music off even after hes a zombie is classic.

I just watched the movie a couple of days ago and I can now agree. It can definitely be a sad film for sure. The line about Goldblum being an insect who dreamt he was a man was really brilliant. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who got shaken up by the ending of T2. I had a phase when I was younger that everyday when I went to the babysitters, I would watch T2. That ending got me every single time.

Man after going on that adventure with them through T1 and T2, and through his transition and everything, it was hard NOT to get attached to the T-800. Even though it sucks what had to happen to him I actually wouldn't change it. It just feels right. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Just saw 1408 this past weekend and I think we can add this one to the list. When John Cusack's character's daughter died in his arms - again. Very sad.
