The Bela Lugosi Collection
The Bela Lugosi collection got released last week. Its 5 films on 1 double sided disc. I figured it deserved a thread of its own.
The only film I watched so far was Murder in the Rue Morgue made in 1932. Its an Edgar Allan Poe adaptation about a mad scientist (Lugosi) who is trying to proof the theory of evolution by injecting his pet gorillas blood into females he has captured. I think he trys to make a gorilla girl gfor his pet. Lugosi also can understand what his ape says. He has the usual deformed assitant. The gorilla is a guy in a suit for the action scenes and a real monkey for the rest.
The movie is a little slow compared to Dracula or White Zombie. It has nice sets and atmosphere. Its supposed to be taken place in Paris.
Bela Lugosi is only in the hour long film for about 15 minutes unfortunatley. His performance is good. He sports a thick unibrow and bad perm, but keeps his cool accent.
The transfer is very good for a movie this old. It has the occasional spots and lines. The sound is a little uneven at times but not bad. Theres also a trailer for the film on the disc. Unfortunatley there are no other extras.
Movie 2/4
DVD 4/4 for the look of the film
