Hostel

I just got home from the Toronto Film Festival. The movie I had the privilage of viewing was Hostel, Eli Roth's new movie. I couldn't wait until November when it comes out simply because it will be edited and rated by then. I was lucky to catch the very unrated version of it. Having said all of that, this movie is unbelievable.

It wasn't completly finished with some special effects and the score needing to be completed. But this Eli Roth's best movie and will most likely remain his best movie for awhile. He is the best writer and director in the horror genre right now. Once again, he cast actors that the general public don't know and most of them made their film debut. The two main characters are Jay Hernandez (Friday Night Lights, Ladder 49, Crazy/Beautiful) and Derek Richardson (Dumb and Dumberer), both are great in their roles as Paxton and Josh, two American backpackers who are looking for some fun with hot European girls. They meet Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson), an Icelanic drifter and the three them have some serious fun in Amsterdam before they hear of this great sexy Hostel in Slovakia. They head there obvious looking for sex, but at this point, the movie which starts out similar to a Eurotrip style does a 180 and becomes one of the most goriest horror movies I have ever seen.

Most of the audience, myself included, applauded non-stop during the second half of the movie when horrorific gory scenes were continous. I keep referring to this movie as a horror, but it is not your normal horror movie, it's more distrubing, (think Saw times 100, but this is the unrated version, so the rated version will be more like Saw). The gore is almost all shown on screen which is awesome, (if u have a weak stomach don't watch it...also don't eat anything before..Eli warned us before the screening) and it is taken to another level. I don't want to spoil anything, so I will just comment on the awesomeness of it without any referrences or examples.

This movie is a mix of a very unrated version of Eurotrip and the gore and shock horror of Saw with great characters and one hell of a story. Eli Roth has now found himself on my list for favourite writers and directors. On a sidenote, he does one of the best Tarrantio impressions I have ever seen. I cannot say enough good things about this movie. I want to see the multiple endings that didn't make the cut when it comes out on DVD. As for anyone who will see the rated version, all I can say is wait for the DVD which will be the unrated one, Eli wants an unrated version on DVD, so it should happen. Just be patient. This is the movie that has finally overtaken Sin City for the best movie of the year. Go see it when it comes out and be sure to catch the unrated version when it hits DVD.

im not surprised by your review - because i read one review on aintitcool.com that states the same fact. which is that this movie is balls out disgusting. Im already wondering myself what this horror must be lkike to really make people 'talk' so much about it.

I think it seems great. I heard something about an October release but I doubt that'll happen. Hopefully it will come out soon though

Clarkey

Got a question for you. Is it simply a great movie becuase of the extent of gore thats in the movie or is it well made. I remember reading reviews for this on aintitcoolnews and all they could rave about was how grea t it cause how disgusiting it was. Is there actually some kind of intelligence going on behind this movie, is it well made or written. I dont care if its gory simply if its quality. You kind of already answered this but I need to knwo this specifically.

HOSTEL

*MAJOR SPOILERS*

Ladies and gentlemen, yesterday was my first time attending any type of film festival, and i cannot express how truly cool it was to see the movie I saw yesterday. I knew that i was in for a treat when the man, Eli Roth was sitting about 2 rows in front of me, and that he was really pumped to give us, the people of Toronto, the first public viewing of this film, after all, Toronto is where Eli launched Cabin Fever. Right before the movie started, Eli just gave us a rundown of what we were going to see, and that it WASNT a finished product (some looses ends like Sound design and digital effects) and that Screen Gems was planning on releasing this in November. He also said that it was a secret until now, but Quentin Tarantino is an executive producer, and low and behold at the beginning of the movie the first credit is "A Quentin Tarantino Production"

Then the movie starts...in what the first half hour seems like the sequel to Eurotrip, we are treated to three backpackers, 2 Americans, Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson) who met up with the Icelandic Oli (Eythor Gundjonsson) in Paris. The three men have somethign in common, they all want to get drunk, drugged and fucked. Things don't work out for them so much in Amsterdam until they meet this dude Alex (Lubomir Vukovy) who tells them that if they were to go to Slovakia that they could get the best chicks to fuck them cause the women there love Americans. At this point i dont get how this would work for Oli, but anyways the three hop aboard on a train and head to Slovakia.

They head to Bratislava, Slovakia where the women walk around naked in the spa, do ecstasy and slut it up at the disco, everything the 3 fellas wanted....that is until their friend Oli goes disappearing.

THIS is where the movie shifts into one of the most INTENSE and crazy horror films that I have witnessed with my own two eyes. I was one of the people who thought that SAW was extremely intense and crazy, but this movie just blows that away. The first Torture scene honestly had my hands clammy and my knees buckling, Derek Richardson convincingly plays off the torture victim like noone i've ever seen, the way this scene was acted was perfection, and i really felt like someone was suffering at this very moment. This is what separated most horror films from this, the acting was SPOT ON. At first Jay Hernandez character of Paxton was very annoying, and very unlikeable, but since he did a tremendous job of acting, he stole the show in the second half once shit hits the fan.

The whole concept of businessmen paying to see people get tortured is disgusting, but its a unique twist in horror films, since there is NO clear cut villain. The gore is crazy, there are drills plunging into peoples cheeks with skin flying everywhere, we get a chainsaw dismembering fingers and shredding someones thighs apart. oh lets not forget slit Achilles tendons, decapaitations, bloody bodies being sewn together, a blowtorch brought upon someones face leaving their eye LITERALLY hanging by a thread only to have the nerve cut shooting out some nasty puss. IT JUST DOESNT END FOLKS!

One of my favorite scenes was definately the revenge Paxton has on 3 people (theres some things you have to see for yourself).

HOSTEL is an intense picture, that is definately no sophmore jinx for Eli Roth, the version we caught was unrated, so im sure some of what we saw will be hacked apart, but he said that he plans on having an unrated version on the dvd, and an alternate ending.

chinton,

i think this film is shot beautifully, considering its shot entirely in europe, prague to be exact, its a unique look for a horror movie. The acting is insanely good for a horror movie, and really shifts into gear in the second act, i cant express how amazing the acting was, and the crowd we were with couldnt seem to disagree, i really think Eli Roth has made something special here

I think I'm the only one who thought Hostel was cheap exploitation with no creative style at all. It's good because it dares to shockj you, but thats it. It has a very creative idea but a weak script in comparison to the idea. I do feel this will be a film that pushes the envelope and will lay the path for more gruesome films in the future.

Cabin Fever was probably one of the worst movies made in the last ten years. Hostel doesn't look or sound and better to me.

Well, from what I have heard about it, it sounds good. Plus, I was a big fan of Cabin Fever and I think that from the two reviews that I have read, it is going to be a kick ass piece of cinema or a flaming piece of shit.

It wasn't a secret when I saw it 2 months ago in LA, when Quentin attended. The whole reaosn I went was because it said Quentin Tarantino Presents, so it got me thinking it was probably really good, if QT liked it. I was dissapointed, but with that, it's not a bad movie, its just relies too much on cheap tricks and it's not consistant.

Cabin Fever is one of the best movies I have seen. I loved the story and the humor. It wasn't that scary but it was damned good. So I am looking forward to this new flick.
