A Serenity Sequel?

Was just over at www.ign.com in the news section and noticed this story. Not sure how reliable they are but I know that many of us Firefly fans will welcome any sort of return to that universe.

Exclusive: A Serenity Sequel?
This one's for the Browncoats.
by IGN FilmForce
December 1, 2005 - IGN FilmForce has heard that, although it was very disappointed in the poor boxoffice showing for Serenity, Universal may not have retired Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his renegade crew just yet.

Sources said that, given the strong sales of the TV series Firefly on DVD, Universal is planning a sequel film to Serenity that will be produced with and to broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi Channel, which is part of the NBC Universal family.

The project is said to be a lower budget undertaking streamlined for the small-screen.

IGN FilmForce checked with Joss Whedon's camp who denied the claim; Universal did not comment.

Time will tell if this rumor pans out.

Anyone heard anything else??

I never saw the TV show, but really enjoyed the movie. I hope there is a sequel, especially if it's as action-packed and humorous, with a pretty good story too, as the first flick. Hell yeah, bring it on.

Hopefully Joss keeps his hands on it, and never lets anyone assosciated with the Sci-Fi network (i.e. directors) touch it, cuz I don't want to see anything Firefly related turning into "A Sci-Fi Pictures Original" crapfest.

After having watched the movie, and liked it, I would say a sequel is a bad idea. Leave the movie as it is, the ending to Serenity was good enough and anything else would just lessen the first movie.

That's why I really don't like this idea. Loved the show, loved the movie, but Sci-Fi pictures originals always suck. If anything, maybe a mini-series or they could just go ahead and bring the show back on Sci-Fi (because for some odd reason they're minis and series seem to be good). You never know though, maybe the DVD sales will really boost the chances for a big sequel. It worked for the Punisher.

Even if we get nothing though, I agree that the movie did a great job at ending the story.

The only miniseries I've ever seen on there that I thought was any good was Frank Herbert's Dune, and then Children of Dune was horrible. Battlestar Galactica somehow made me actually WANT to watch the old '70s show... in a bad way.
And I still want to know what bunch of idiots bought so many copies of said Punisher DVD to warrant a sequel... Besides me and the copy I bought for my ex-girlfriend ("Oh Thomas Jane is so hot!" Bitch.)

Sci-Fi Channel Originals kind of run on two tracks. You have the sort of high toned stuff they're proud of (the two Dune series, Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, Battlestar Galactica and the Earthsea one) and then you have that shit they make going for laughs, that runs on Saturday nights. I get the feeling that this would be more the former.
