I think there were a few surprises....namely HUSTLE & FLOW and the absense of MUNICH and KONG. I'm glad to not see KONG, which while a good movie is not award material outside of effects. I think MUNICH will get more Oscar noms. I know that Best Cast doesn't exactly equal best picture, but if it does I think BROKEBACK is possibly the only one that will get a nom...possibly GOOD NIGHT too. I love seeeing HUSTLE, but I think its best shot will be a sleeper nom for best actor with Howard.

Amy Adams / JUNEBUG – Ashley

But, where the hell is Maria Bello? I still think she'll make the cut.

Capote looked almost dead except for Lead Actor, Adapted Screenplay and maybe Supporting Actress, but now it's almost a lock for a nomination in Best Picture, Best Director, and Supporting Actress (as well as Lead Actor and Adapted Screenplay).

Which I'm very happy about.

I'm very happy as well.

As for the rest of the noms, Crowe slid in the fith spot for best actor, beating out Howard, Feinnes, or Daniels. I'd pick any of those three over him.

Well, I thought Russell Crowe's Golden Globe nod would be his only accolade this awards season, but I guess I was wrong. Still, the only nomination that truly surprised me is Don Cheadle's for Crash. Clearly, Hollywood loves this movie, and I'm pretty sure now it will get a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars.

People, let's not read too much into the Best Picture categories. These are just for acting - an ensemble cast not a Best Picture make. I'm not too sure about Capote; I think it's a Best Actor winner shoe-in and that's it. Maybe a Best Supporting Actress nod, but little else.

Now Crash has a shot, but I'm betting more on a Best Screenplay nod (maybe win), but I think a Best Picture nod is a long shot. I MAY BE WRONG, but that's just my two cents.

I'm really pleased to see Amy Adams and Rachel Weisz both nominated, two of the best performances of 2005, in my opinion.

Am I the only person who loathes Russell Crowe? He's a very mediocre actor, all he does is mumble yet people seem to be taking this as genuine emotion. Plus he's a cunt off screen. His nomination is a waste, it could have gone to someone much more deserving. I sincerely hope he isn't nominated for an oscar but hey, that's just me.

Replace Crowe with Heath Ledger, and those are my exact thoughts. Crowe is a good actor.

actually, i'm surprised by quite a bit of noms here:

- both cheadle and gyllenhall for best supporting actor. would've chosen terrence howard over cheadle.
- 4 out of 5 best actors playing real people. i'd think that after last years' heavy amount of biopics, they would choose less actors portraying somebody else, especially with so much good competition for this category.
- hustle & flow for best ensemble. am i the only one that finds it strange that a movie can get this nomination without having a single actor nominated individually? don't agree with this one. they should've just nominated terrence howard for best actor.

between these nominations and the golden globes, it'll be interesting to see who the academy will choose. i also can't remember a time when so many major studiofavorites have come up so short. it's nice to see some independent flicks get the glory they deserve.

I agree to a certain extent. Looking back, the only truly great performance Crowe has given was in The Insider (an Oscar worthy turn), otherwise he isn't really that good of an actor (I agree, the mumbling tend to become annoying), despite being in some brilliant films. I was surprised by his SAG nom, but I sure as hell don't think he's deserving. I personally would've replaced him with someone much better, say, Terrence Howard (for Hustle & Flow).
