Benicio Del Toro is "The Wolf Man"

Hey everybody,

A very cool piece of news just released about a new adaption of the Wolf Man tale that will star Benicio Del Toro as the hairy monster himself. Universal Studios and the scribes of Seven will be a part of it and Del Toro will produce but there is not set director yet. The movie is slated for a 2008 release but filming will start next year after he is finished shooting Guerillas with Steven Soderbergh. Benicio is a busy man, I can't wait to see this.

Check out this link for details.

I wonder if they'll use make up, CGI or maybe both.

I don't know about the rest of ya, but the most exciting thing about these news to me, personally is that Andrew Kevin Walker is the writer behind this.

In the Sin City commentary Robert Rodriguez mentioned Del Toro's love for characters like The Wolfman and Dracula. That was actually partially the reason for the lightning strikes that lit up his face in Sin City.

So we know he's passionate about this project. He's even got some sort of Universal Monsters collection. And lets face it - The man's a great actor and looks the part

I hope they use makeup -- nothing like seeing an old school transformation that doesn't involve computers or quick dissolves. I've missed that technique, especially since we were shown the transformation clip from An American Werewolf in London today in class.

I'm not to sure ANY production company would be thrilled about their investment being hinged upon vintage techniques, but I agree that going the strict CG route with this would be a mistake. Whatever they choose to do though, I hope the transformations are very dark and graphic, maybe even going as far as to say outright disgusting. Of course, with Andrew Kevin Walker writing I don't doubt thats what we're in store for.

This news just made my day. Psyched for this picture already.

With Rick Baker doing the makeup effects the transformation and creature should look amazing.

Sounds interesting. Benicio Del Toro is probably the perfect choice for the Wolf Man, since Hugh Jackman would be kind of a cliche.

AINTITCOOLNEWS seems to be hinting(or flat out saying) that Mark Romanek is going to be the director.

That's what I heard as well and he's listed to direct at IMDB. For a guy who has been working for 20 years he sure hasn't directed much other than music videos, but he did direct one-hour photo which is promising.

This remake doesn't bother me at all. Benicio is an awesome actor. They also haven't done a true Wolf Man film in a while. So, it's semi-refreshing. Remaking the old Universal films doesn't actually bother me. They have their charms and are good films, but they are of course very dated. Now remaking something like Friday The 13th or April Fools Day is stupid as fuck.

Nor I. I take issue with remaking films that were made a decade prior, were excellent, and the remake hasn't attached any worthwhile talent or budget. This seems to be the opposite which I am happy to see. In fact I would love to see my favorite universal monster movie remade; The Creature from The Black Lagoon.

Now this is a horror film I can't wait to see... the werewolf has been the only monster that hasn't truly had a great film made about it. Sure, I love the vintage stuff, but I don't think I've seen a film about a werewolf that didn't have its fair share of flaws. And I love werewolves. When I was younger, they were my favorite monsters but I'm still kind of shocked that even films like Howling, An American Werewolf in London, even Wolfman aren't as good as I thought they could've been. I love the effects, but I just don' think it's hit a peak yet and this could possibly be it. And please don't come at me with Ginger Snaps or Dog Soldiers. I found them to be dull with weak effects.
