Something interesting about 'The Squid and the Whale' and 'Fly Away Home'
I was just thinking about this the other day. I'm sure other people thought of it, but it only just occured to me. In 1996, Jeff Daniels played Anna Paquin's father in the family movie Fly Away Home. Anna Paquin was just 14 years old at the time. 9 years later, Jeff Daniels plays her lover in The Squid and the Whale, and has a kissing scene with her. Would anyone else find that awkward if you were in Jeff Daniels's shoes (or Anna Paquin's, for that matter)?

If I was in Jeff Daniels shoes, I'd inquire about some long takes.

I have yet to see The Squid and the Whale, but just knowing that even makes me feel a bit awkward. I'm sure it came up on set, how could it not.
Speaking of Fly Away Home, that was actually a pretty good movie when I was 13. I wonder how it would hold up if I watched it now. |

Yeah, the director talked about that issue in the commentary. I mean, the whole thing about her going for both the dad and the son was weird enough already, but the FLY AWAY HOME thing kicked it up another notch.
Still, the movie was very interesting. Both very bizarre and, at times, hilarious. Worth watching. |
