Those are the ones I have the most problem with. And number one should've just been "Everyone in the Godfather Part I & II"

that's my personal favorite in the list. added to the fact that his performances as forrest gump, andrew beckett in "philadelphia", and jimmy dugan in "a league of their own" aren't even on the list.

but honestly, how can you make a list like this and not include vito corleone? it's easily one of the five or ten best acting performances of all time and it's not on a top 100 list.

I usually don't have problems with other people's lists, but I am going to point out how much higher they listed Nicholson in The Last Detail than in Cuckoos Nest.

Nicholson is my favorite actor, and The Last Detail is a great film, but it's not performance heavy like Cuckoos Nest in which Nicholson shines against a lot of great character actors. I'm not defaming The Last Detail at all, but when I think of it, I don't think of Nicholson's performance., just about how great a film it is.

Granted, for as long as I've drank, I still use the line, "Best goddamned beer in the world." and everyone has no idea why I'm arching my eyebrows and doing a different voice while I'm saying it.

I can't believe they did not mention Ben Kingsley as Mohandis Gandhi in GANDHI, or even Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption.
Yeah, it's not really an impressive list.

Edward Norton didn't make it? The man gets no respect.

No Sean Penn either. Some love for his performance in Dead Man Walking would be nice.

Who else? Willen Dafoe in Last Temptation of Christ

Kevin Spacey for Se7en or The Usual Suspects
Christian Bale for American Psycho
Ellen Burstyn for Requiem for a Dream
Sarah Polley for The Sweet Hereafter
Billy Crudup in Waking The Dead

The problem with these lists is that, even though they recognize some great performances there, they are bound to fill most of the top 100 (and in particular the top 10) with "TEH_CLASSICS".

i.e. If we put too many 90s performances in the top 10, people will think we have no knowledge of movies before that era. So fill this shit up with stuff from the past, no matter how stilted and forced those performances were.

Well, I'm not going to get into this "old performances vs. new performances" debate again. Just realize that there are great performances from every time period, and you can't judge by when the movie was released.

Anyway, there were some pleasant surprises on the list (Emily Watson in Breaking the Waves, Toshiro Mifune in Yojimbo, Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein), but I also find it hard to take the list seriously when Tom Hanks in Big is #15 above not only all of his other performances, but above every performance by Orson Welles, Alec Guinness, and tons of other great actors who weren't even on the list.

Plus, I love Gene Wilder's performance in Young Frankenstein, as I already said, but top 10 of all time? Come on, that's a little ridiculous.

Some other great performances that didn't make the list and haven't been brought up in this thread yet:
Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy (as good, if not better, than Hoffman)
Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet
George C. Scott in Dr. Strangelove
Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove
Sissy Spacek in Coal Miner's Daughter
Sissy Spacek in Badlands
James Cagney in White Heat
Orson Welles in The Third Man
Alec Guinness in The Bridge on the River Kwai
Anthony Quinn in Zorba the Greek
Henry Fonda in On Golden Pond
Henry Fonda in Once Upon a Time in the West
Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces
Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
William Hurt in Kiss of the Spider Woman
Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction
Morgan Freeman in Driving Miss Daisy
Jessica Tandy in Driving Miss Daisy
Julianne Moore in Boogie Nights

And I take issue with the fact that they included Johnny Depp's one-note performance in Pirates while ignoring his best performance, which is Ed Wood.

It's just another list that not one person will agree with. I do think that Brando's Vito Corleone should be on there somewhere, and how Steve Martin as "The Jerk" go on there, I'll never know. But hey, what're you going to do. It's just another excuse for Premiere to make people talk about them.

I agree, zeppelin. There ARE great performances from every period, but Premiere doesn't really reflect that. A lot of great 80s, 90s and 00s performances were ignored.

And very nice list. I loved all of Peter Sellers' roles in Dr. Strangelove.

Steve Martin in "The Jerk" at no. 99 -- deserved in my opinion. Comedic performances are really overlooked. Other great ones:

- Kevin Kline in A Fish Called Wanda
- Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness
- John Candy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Of course it's all subjective, but I'm not bothered about the list. Although the biggest change I'd make is by putting in Alec Baldwin for Glengarry Glen Ross...small role, but such an electric performance.

Nice to see Jeff Bridges as the Dude on there though even if it is at 90th

My favorites on the list are:

100 Malcolm McDowell as Alex DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (1971)

48 Bill Murray as Phil Connors in Groundhog Day (1993)

9 Gene Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein in Young Frankenstein (1974)

Anyone think..

41 Samuel L. Jackson as Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction (1994)

Will soon change to:

41 Samuel L. Jackson as Nelville Flynn in Snakes On A Plane (2006)

?

23 Russell Crowe as Jeffrey Wigand in The Insider (1999)
22 Johnny Depp as Edward Scissorhands in Edward Scissorhands (1990)
16 Cary Grant as T.R. Devlin in Notorious (1946) - how is it that he made the cut but Bergman and Rains, both of whom were far better in the movie, didn't?
14 Robert Duvall as Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies (1983)

ONES THAT HAVE NO BUSINESS DOING ON THIS LIST WHATSOEVER IMO:
79 Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

46 Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland in Cast Away (2001)
31 Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles in Ray (2004)

(there are others that wouldn't even make my top 100, but there were at least some good qualities in them to write home about, these had none)

GLARING OMISSIONS:
ANY of Orson Welles' performances (especially Charles Foster Kane and Harry Lime)
ANY of Ingrid Bergman's performances (especially Ilsa Lund and Alice Huberman)
Humphrey Bogart as Rick Blaine - Casablanca
Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch - To Kill a Mockingbird
Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone - The Godfather

Joan Fontaine as The second Mrs. de Winter - Rebecca
Gong Li as Songlian - Raise the Red Lantern
Jack Nicholson as Robert Eroica Dupea - Five Easy Pieces
(the list goes on and on......)

Overall, not a bad list as there are several worthy inclusions, but like most other 'greatest lists', I disagree with a lot of the rankings & positions, and then there are those far better performances that always seem to get left behind.

I like the diversity of this list...they didn't go for all the safe picks. Sure, some good ones were left off, but there'd be just as much bitching if the top ten went:

De Niro
Brando
Pacino
Brando
Brando
Streep
De Niro
De Niro
Pacino
etc...

ED HARRIS!

One of the most underrated actors of all time! He steals the screen whenever he is on it. He should have 3 Oscars on his shelf yet he has none. What the hell?

He should have at least been nominated for the following roles:

1. The Abyss - Brilliant emotional and physical performance that steals my heart everytime.

2. Just Cause - Played the most brilliant psychotic role I have ever seen on celluloid.

3. Pollock - How they hell did he not win for this, pure brilliance.

4. The Rock - Even though it was an action flick, Ed Harris became a man whom everyone can respect as a human being and as a man who is trying to fight for a cause. He was goddamn genius as General Hummell.

5. Needful Things - Played the best town sheriff that has ever walked the silver screen.

And the list goes on and on and on and on........

As well, in "A History of Violence, how the hell did William Hurt get nominated for a "Best Supporting Role" Oscar and Ed got nothing when he was ten times better than Hurt.

I have to agree with ChemicalRomance. I do like the 90's peformances better than the 50s. Although, I watch a good amount of 1950's movies , I find the performances to be boring or outdated. You can watch them all you want, Heavy, but It is a idea of tastes that seperate a movie fan from another.

I understand all of that, that's why it was a joke.

...

I'm scrolling down the list SERIOUSLY expecting Gregory Peck as Atticus in "To Kill a Mockingbird" to be #1. And it isn't even ON THERE!

Shenanigans!!!

And yes Jack... Where the hell is Anthony Perkins?!?!?!

I don't even think this is an issue of personal preference. A lot of these performances are either terribly obscure or just silly (I mean I love Bill Murray... but "Groundhog Day"? over Norman Bates and Atticus Finch!??!?!... come ON!).

11 Daniel Day-Lewis as Christy Brown in My Left Foot (1989)

Great pick, though it should probably be in the top 10 imo

One of the best most iconic performances ever.

I absolutely loved Election but what the fuck is Reese Witherspoon doing at #45?? Not even HER best.

There also seems to be a lot of other actors on here for roles that aren't even the best on their personal lists.

97 Ben Kingsley as Don Logan in Sexy Beast (2001) - I'd put Schindler's List and Gahndi higher
92 Clint Eastwood as "Dirty" Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry (1971) - Iconic yes but better than him in Unforgiven?
73 John Travolta as Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever (1977) - again very iconic but he was better in Pulp Fiction
48 Bill Murray as Phil Connors in Groundhog Day (1993) - I love this one too but I'll take Lost in Translation, Rushmore and Ghostbusters
46 Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland in Cast Away (2001) - I'll give 'em BIG even though it's too high but not Cast Away over Philadelphia? Forrest Gump?

And I couldn't agree more Bubba, as good as Jack was in The Last Detail (a great fucking movie) there is no way it should be higher than Cuckoo's Nest and I think he was probably better in Five Easy Pieces, Chinatown and The Shining too.

The performances in the list are all good, but it's a shit list because of the extremely questionable way they are ranked.

I'd like to put in an application to the Why The Hell Isn't Gregory Peck As Atticus Finch On The List!? Club.

Also beginning to question the following glaring omissions; some have already been mentioned in this thread:

Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard in American History X
Will Smith as Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali in Ali
Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet
Gene Hackman as Det. Jimmy 'Popeye' Doyle in The French Connection
Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List
Robert Shaw as Quint in Jaws
Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, The Godfather
Billy Bob Thornton as Karl Childers in Sling Blade

...I don't think those guys are on there, anyway. Could be wrong.

Agree about Ed Harris, as well.
