HOSTEL -- over-rated??
Eli Roth's movie
Produced by Quentin tarantino and me being QT's fan just had to see what he had produced and honestle it wasnt as great as i had expected it to be... 3 backpackers are in Amsterdam where they get locked out of their youth hostel. They are invited into a man's house where he tells them of a hostel somewhere in eastern Europe where the women are all incredibly hot and have a taste for American men. When they get there, everything is too good to be true - the hostel is "to die for" Wish there cud've been more in it... |

Yeah I was disappointed by hostel. The non horror first act was very childish and the script was nowhere near as witty as cabin fever. And even when the shite hit the fan you still had a very mainstream horror that was nowhere near as disturbing as some of the things I've seen recently, like the miike episode of masters of horror, which was disappointing as hostel was hyping itself up as something special.

the film was crap, the first 45 odd minutes had no horror, laughable script and was overly childish. when the "horror" did kick in i was just left wondering where all the gore was that we were promised. complete overhyped crap

I agree with everything you people are saying. When I reviewd Hostel, I said that it wasn't even close to being as good as Cabin Fever, with the main reason being Eli Roth abandonned his roots and went main stream. Anyways, everything that made Cabin Fever great, was lacking from Hostel. The script had terrible dialogue, the acting was subpar, and the ending/twists were just like "wahatever".
I mean come on......"Smokey the Clown"......FREAKING HILARIOUS!!!!! |

"hostel" was the first movie i saw in 2006, and i can confidently say that it will be the worst movie i see in 2006. you wait through that shitty story - with absolutely terrible dialogue, acting, plot, everything - only to build up to these laughable "torture" scenes. nine dollars and two hours of my life wasted.
and even though there were many hot chicks getting naked, it still didn't make up for the rest of the film. that's not what i go to the movies for. that's what porn is for, and even that i can get for free. |

Yeah I thought it was pretty dissapointing. Yeah there were some scary and funny moments, the nudity was good and the overall concept was interesting, but this merely raises it from bad to mediocre, as the first 45 minutes are really boring and nothing happens, the gore isn't even that good, and there's no real sense of tension and/or caring about what's going on. Plus the script was rubbish.

Here's my perspective:
Was Hostel "over-rated" and "over-hyped" by its producers, including Tarantino (whom I love)..and then not delivering the goods in a more horrific manner? Yes it was. Is it still a decent horror flick? Yes it is. Reflection and comparisons: When I was a wee kid, there were cult flicks that we all heard about that as wee kids we could never see due to our age, the rating or the unavailability of said flick. These movies reached MYTHOLOGICAL status..they were: Texas Chainsaw Massacre Hills Have Eyes Last House on the Left I Spit on Your Grave I Drink Your Blood Except for TCM, these flicks ended up sucking ass for me. Now, kids of today have it much easier in that a movie really wont reach myth status cuz somehow they will be able to see it without waiting years and sometimes DECADES like I did. There's netflix, video stores carry these types of flicks..theres downloading, etc.. But if I compare those old cult flicks and their hype up against stuff of today such as: House of 1000 Corpses Devils Rejects Hills Have Eyes remake Haute Tension Hostel Wolf Creek...even Wrong Turn....there is NO comparison...these flicks are hands down far and above superior to those so called "awesome cult movies of the 70s. I bet (and hope) there are still some grade school kids that are building these newer movies up in anticipation of seeing them some day...and I know for the most part they wont be as disapointed with the quality and goods offered in these new "exploitation" horror movies when comparing them to the so called cult classics of yesteryear. |

By the way for you blood thirsty hounds Eli Roth talked about Hostel 2 and he said its going to start where the first one left off and there wont be any of humor in the first 40 minutes instead its going to be a all horror. |

The reason why is cause i didn't listen to any of the hype when it was released, I saw it cause i thought it looked good from the trailers. Hostel reminded me of my fantasy and my nightmare mixed into one movie. The first 45 minutes were my fantasy and you can guess why. The final 45 were my nightmare, being tortured and seeing my friend's dead. That's why I loved this movie, cause some of the things the charcthers did i would have done (like Paxton running over those skanky Ho's with the car, If i went through what he went through, i would have done that) The movie was gory enough for me also and i know the hype promised Lots and thats why most people were disappointed. Don't listen to hype IMO. I think you mean Boobies and yes the boobies were great. I love Boobies ![]() |

It was impossible to ignore the hype. You couldn't turn on your TV without seeing a TV spot claiming that it was the scariest movie ever made. You couldn't go to a movie Web site without seeing an ad declaring the same thing. QT and Roth told anyone who would listen that it was going to scare the shit out of people and blow their minds. So I don't blame people for bringing certain expectations into the theater. I tried not to buy into it, because I don't think you can take the word of QT or Roth. They are shameless hucksters. I did expect more than I got, and that isn't because my expectations were too high.

I didn't think that you liked it because of the hype. Maybe ignore was the wrong word. Impossible to not be aware of the hype.

i like many others fell into the hype of the film...thinking it was this great horror flick...very disturbing...one of the best horror movies in a while..blah blah..it was none of that...i came out very dissapointed...the premise was great....the hostel premise that is..not the 3 guys trying to get laid for the first half...but the whole idea of a hostel where you pay to kill someone or whatever...that was a nice idea...just didnt dealt the treatment it should have to be a great horror expierence......ahh well..thats what i get for believing the hype..

I loved the flick myself. For the R rating, we were provided with a lot of gore (that eye...eww!). And hey, I loved the first 45 minutes. I don't know of anyone who could complain about 45 minutes of nudity.

Yes, It was a little bit over-rated. I didn't mind that the movie took it's time to get to the action, I enjoyed the build-up. I don't mind that comedy along the way, it was funny. What I did mind was that when they finally got to the torture action, they showed so little of it. They showed less of the "all out torture/gore" than they promised/hyped and that was a shame. I knew, knowing it was directed by Eli Roth, that it would be a little overhyped (like the piece of crap, "Cabin Fever"), but I didn't think they would overhype it this much. The movie isn't bad though. I gave it *** / ****, but had they not over-hyped it to death, I might have given it ***1/2 / **** instead. They shot themselves in the foot.

SPOILERS!
I like Roth's style of humor involving the supporting characters (ie., the bubblegum kids), but to applaud the sadistic bloodshed as a great form of horror? The show was devoid of any real scares or thrills. Takashi Miike's cameo implied that AUDITION was probably a big inspiration to Roth, but where that film develops the protagonist for 90 minutes before unleashing it's horrors, the ugly Americans from HOSTEL have simply tits & fags on their minds ("by their fruit you will know them?"). It should be said that their banter and sleazy misadventures were sort of entertaining, but to descend to the lowest common denominator in order to bond with the movie's heroes? Perhaps Roth is attempting to say something with the ending - if our surviving hero uses the same killer instincts and/or sick desires as the businessmen torturers to obtain pleasure, under the guise of justice. But that may be giving the man too much credit given the nature of this juvenile flick, illustrated clearly in the screenshot below: ![]() |

It's a movie about juveniles that completely winds up a juvenile, puerile mess. This was so disappointing, and I don't even blame the obnoxious hype about QT producing, etc. It's the film that should be rated, not the marketing, and based on that aspect, Hostel was a major underachiever and a terrible film.
Severed limbs do not easily impress me anymore. I want to feel deep rooted terror. Last edited by Lazy Boy; 04-13-2006 at 04:50 AM.. |

Hostel is only overrated from the fans perspective and not the critics (who mostly bashed it). Cabin Fever had the same thing, and it was overrated too in that sense. The entire first half was boring and probably the worst attempt at a Eurotrip type comedy movie I have seen. The second half kicks in and we get the supposed horrible torture, but it was really not that bad. The make-up effects were pretty bad at points too (the fingers getting cut off by the chainsaw were laughably bad) and the script was basically a wannabe Tarantino. I wouldn't call Hostel overrated though, as I said the critics gave it quite the bashing when it came out. Overhyped is the better word here, I can compare this to Saw in terms of how it got tons of good word but the movie itself was pretty average.

I think its a matter of opinion since the last two really effective horror movies I've seen are Saw and Hostel.

I was hyped for the movie and i fucking loved it, but i think one of the reasons i thought it was more violent than others is because i havent seen any of the clips online or any spoilers.
