My Top 10 Lists from 1957 to 2001 are currently under reconstruction. There are so many movies that I haven't yet seen (like IF... and the French version of BREATHLESS), and there are some (like THE BLACK STALLION) which I haven't seen since I was a kid.

1979 and 1980 are especially problematic, since I am having a hard time deciding which film(s) to place first and/or second on my list. Yes, RAGING BULL was the best film of 1980, but I liked THE SHINING better. Ditto APOCALYPSE NOW and ALIEN in 1979.

I'll have to decide whether these lists will be my favorite films or the best films of those years.

Guess I'm analyzing this way too much.

I'll admit to a bit of creative accountancy for 1898-9;Grandma's Reading Glass is usually given as 1900,but i've found it as 1898 in one book.Similarly with As Seen Through a Telescope(early voyeurism).Listing other pioneering films i've seen under each year would be a purely academic excercise.I can't at the moment fill every year till i can check the names and dates of a few others,and even then i may well be short.I've not seen Feuillade's Vampires in full,but it's the best of several i've seen from that year- failing that i'd have included Daydreams(Bauer),which is considered by some a masterpiece,though i prefer his Twilight of a Woman's Soul,and A Life for a Life.I dislike Birth of a Nation.I'd like to have seen more of the great early Swedish films of Sjostrom and Stiller.I'm grateful to Starewicz animations for filling a couple of years.Anyone else seen his excellent work?

QUENTIN, your list is really impressive and has plenty of my favourites as well. What interests me is that fact that over 95% of the movies on your lists seem to be american. Do you even have a change to watch foreign cinema, or do simply prefer american cinema over foreign one?

My own personal lists would probably have 1/4 of my favourite movies outside USA, but admittedly here in Finland we get plenty of european and a bit of asian cinema as well, all as original versions (no dubbing or re-cutting).

About 1 in every 8 films I see is foreign, I'd like that number to be higher but your average American video store (especially the kind in the small-ish town that I live in) have thousands of movies, and maybe a hundred or hundred and fifty foreign films. I've seen a lot of the "big" foreign films, the ones by the really notable directors, both because they are the ones I'm most interested in and because they are the easiest to find. I've seen most of the films by Fellini, Kurosawa, Bunuel, Truffaut, Godard, Tarkovsky, Imamura, De Sica, Eisenstein, Vigo, Renoir, Resnais, Herzog, Bergman, Wenders, Visconti, Carne, Rohmer, Cocteau, and Zhang, some by Ozu, Teshigahara, Kieslowski, Leconte, Mizayaki, Takahata, Malle, Beneix, Babenco, Eustache, Olmi, Garvas, Melville, Kadar & Klos, Jeunet & Caro, Demy, Antonioni, Ray, Dassin, Clouzot, Ophuls, Gance, Pastrone, Dreyer, Wiene, Sjostrom, Lang and Murnau.

You should see atleast one, and in many cases multiple (with some up to 10) films on the list from each year and there are hundreds in my top 1000 list. The problem for you may be, if you're not familiar with them or their English titles, except when a film only has a foreign title or is known exclusively by it's foreign title (like Yojimbo, Rififi, L'Atalante) I placed it with it's English title, because a lot more people in America know foreign films by their English titles.

Atleast 20% of the films are in a foreign language though, and the number gets higher the further into the past you go. Admittedly, I've seen a lot more "classic" foreign films than recent ones, although I did love Open Your Eyes, Insomnia, No Man's Land, The Princess & The Warrior, The Crimson Rivers, The Devil's Backbone and Amores Perros from the past couple of years. Maybe if I have the time I will go back and put all the foreign film's original language titles next to the English titles in parenthesis.

P.S. -In a few cases, such as Olmi's Tree of Wooden Clogs and Kieslowski's Red... it's simply that since creating this list I've seen or re-seen them and am not sure how I'd place them on this original list, again if I get the time and get around to re-sorting and arranging this fairly long list, I'll make all the appropriate changes.

Actually, I just checked IMDB and I think your incorrect. In parentheses, next to the title it says 1996 on IMDB. See, Hard Eight AKA Sydney made it's world premier in the US at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on January 20th, 1996. So technically, Hard Eight is a 1996 film. I too go by the American release dates.

In parenthesis next to the title, sure it says 1996, the year next to the title of a film on the IMDb is just the first time it was played somewhere, but that doesn't mean it is a film of that year. There are tons of movies that play in the film festival circuit for months and months before they are released, if you use the film fesitval circuit as a basis for release date, then 1/4 of all big Oscar contenders are gonna be ineligible... What is used for release date and what the Academy and critics use to determine year is the year of release to the public, if you notice Hard Eight only played at Sundance in 1996, but was released in America on February 28th, 1997. That's why there are two USA release dates on the IMDb. If you choose to go by the festival circuit, you're the first person I've ever seen do that. The rule for year of release is when it hits theaters, Hard Eight didn't come to theaters till 1997.
