Great Movies Wouldn't be as Good w/o Great Music?

Some of my favorite movies of all-time seem to have some of my favorite sountracks...And I was wondering do you think some of these movies (and any others you can think of) would have been as big/great/memorable if it had simply mediocre music?

Such as...Rocky, Star Wars, Godfather, Superman, Psycho, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Back To The Future, Halloween, Indiana Jones, Bond, and even Conan the Barbarian.

The Lion King.

Without the score, it'd just be the most amazing movie of all histories. But it wouldn't have such a beautiful score.

There's little to no doubt in my mind that these movies wouldn't be near as great or classic without their respective soundtracks. The soundtracks gave the movies their identity for the most part.

Like to throw in Jaws to your list as well.

Try watching 2001: A Space Odyssey without the music. It's literally choreographed to it, so it's hard to imagine what it would be like without it. Or Psycho...on the DVD, one of the special features is being able to watch the shower scene without the score, and let me tell you, it has about a billionth of the effect.

I think any of Wes Anderson's movies wouldn't be as great, or have the same feel to them if they didn't have the soundtracks that they do.

I'd like to add Halloween and any Tarantino film to that list. His music choices add an unbelievable amount of extra OOMPH! to his films. Just imagine Pulp Fiction without it's main theme, Kill Bill without the whistling tune or even Reservoir Dogs' infamous ear scene without "Stuck In The Middle".

Also, if musicals count..I'd like to add every single one to this list.

Platoon would still be a masterpiece, but Adagio for Strings is such a great piece of work that adds an additional layer of humanity to the film.

Halloween.
I don't think there is a 5 minute stretch in the whole movie that is without music, and it is all top-notch.

I think pretty easily at the top of my list would be ALMOST FAMOUS...The music is more important in that movie than any other I can immediately think of...

Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events have one of the best score around. I know it is a kid movie but it is brilliantly done.

Also Titanic wasn't bad at all, only that the people on the radio keep on playing it so much that it get to stain that people listen to it no more and it finally become a joke for most people.

One of my favorite things about The Gladiator is the score. Just about every scene is beautifully accompanied by the most awsome music. It definetely would not have been the same without that score.

Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs has some pretty tight music. It fits right to the mood of the films.

Thats a great list...except I don't agree with Conan and Back to the Future...it did help, but those were great flicks...kinda like the terminator movies, ect.

I thought the Silent Hill movie had a great soundtrack. The music sounded like it was a direct adaptation of the game's. I felt it fit like a glove.

On another note, High Tension had the worst soundtrack ever!

That's because the music is from the games. What's funny is that I like the tracks more now. They seem to go better with the movie than with the games 90% of the time. Jeff Danna did a wonderful job.

The Devil's Rejects

Just try to imagine the whole movie with a contemporary score. The music is what made this movie feel like a 70's cult-exploitation movie. Without it, it'd be missing a lot of what made it feel like it was made in that era.

LEON

Eirc Serra score to LEON:THE PROFESSIONAL is so perfect is so many ways. From the opening "a bird over new york" to the finale "the game is over". Of course stings "shape of my heart" is such a great song. I watch the UNCUT INTERNATIONAL VERSION dvd with the isolated mucic score, its just the score no voice work what soever so many times while watching the film.

Decent list, but definately do not agree with the Godfather. That movie could be watched on mute and still be awesome. My opinion, one of the greatest movies ever. Also, Clint Eastwood makes the good, the bad, and the ugly, not the music. but, the music does add something to it.. still a great film. I agree with Halloween, it has the best music out of Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. Overall, good list

I think the list could be endless. I would guess in 90% of movies the music is an integeral part.

Requiem for a Dream
The Crow

Throwing Brokeback Mountain in here, because the low-key guitar music combined with some classic country tunes (King of the Road) match the mood of the movie.
