Tricky-Nearly God

So, I know Tricky's output is sporadic, and Vulnerable is one of the biggest pieces of shit I have ever heard.

But having said that, I think Nearly God is mindblowingly awesome, and the most sparse, intensely powerful record not only of the 'trip hop' era, but of the last fifteen years or so. Anybody else harbor deep admiration for this album?

It's great, it's Tricky at the height of his powers, no doubt (but personally Angels With Dirty Faces blows my mind even more). It does have some exceptional material on it--"I Be The Prophet", "Black Coffee", "Poems" all come immediately to mind, & "Make A Change" is really stunning. I always liked the tense atmosphere Tricky created on his records.

But I don't really care for the latter half of the album, all the guest star singers starts to overwhelm it for me ("Bubbles" and "I Sing For You" I never really cared for, and even the Bjork collaborations fall flat, though I really like Bjork).

So what the fuck ever happened to this guy?? I wholeheartedly agree that Vulnerable is one of the biggest pieces of shit ever crapped out by such a formerly genius musician.

Holy shit--Wikipedia has it that Tricky is actually releasing a new album, Knowle West Boy, on April 7th:

New Portishead AND Tricky in the same month? It's like 1997 all over again!

Hm. I hope it turns out better than this shite up on his MySpace right now..
