Unpopular Music Opinions

King Crimson > Can.

Yes > Roxy Music, mwahahaha.

Brian Enos work with Robert Fripp, anything else Eno has done.

Led Zeppelin are a great band, and yes here that IS an unpopular opinion.

I love U2, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Pearl Jam and most bands Urban and over a third of the MB populice dispises.

And chances are I loath many of the bands you do like.

Modest Mouse is the worst band in music history, anyone who disagrees is just wrong. Bad guitarist, bad bassist, bad drummer, bad vocalists, bad lyrics, bad melodies, there is nothing positive you can say about them, and if you do have something postitive to say, chances are I will dislike you as a person.

Metallica may be overrated, but they are still better than any extreme metal band I have ever heard.

Nirvana do not fucking sound like Pixies, and as opposed to the well regarded belief among Indie losers, Nirvana make better music as well.

Oh yeah, and Pixies are goddamned overrated as holy fuck here, there and everywhere (intentional Beatles reference).

Nick Drake is an incredibly dull "musician" with a voice like a robot who strums over a poorly tuned accoustic guitar he dosen't even know how to play all the while trying to be all "personal" and "emotional" and failing miserably.

Most Emo dosen't suck balls, but most Indie sure as hell does.

Megadeth are talented, but I still find them completely unlistenable.

Johnny Thunders is NOT a very good guitarist, even if his punk rock influence should not be ignored.

Why this will hurt my prog cred greatly, I find Marillion to be incredibly dull, Steve Rothery is a pretty good guitarist though, even if he is a shameless Gilmour ripoff.

Gilmour > Barrett.

Everyone here loves Simplicity, nothing wrong with that, I just find Complexity to be more rewarding.

I don't care how good a songwriter you are if I can't even fucking listen to your vocals, as far as I'm concerned, Leonard Cohen is trash.

Interpol are worse than Nickelback.

Your turn.

Nick Drake's guitar sounds poorly tuned? Could it be...because he didn't play in standard tuning? It's not like he just took his guitar out of the case and didn't bother tuning it before he started playing. It's fine if you don't like his music (actually, it isn't, but that's not the point), but make sure you know what you're talking about before you criticize him for it. It should be noted that I'm a diehard Drake fan, so I'll defend him to the same grave he so precociously entered.

I love your "everyone here" thing, because I don't think we're that cut and dry. In fact, half of the posts here are about how Nine Inch Nails and Tool are the greatest bands in the history of the world.

But in the spirit of your post, I will say a few things...

The only thing Daniel Johnston and Brian Wilson have in common is that they both have mental illnesses. Wilson is a musical genius, while Johnston has crafted a few good songs and a ton of screeching garbage.

Jesus Jones had a few decent songs.

I've said it before but I know that "everyone here" disagrees: featuring your music in commercials, writing songs for commercials, or personally starring in one is the lamest thing you can possibly do as an artist.

"Smoke on the Water" has a terrible riff.

He needs to define the rest of us in general terms so he looks more like a rebel with his statements.

This forum loves Led Zeppelin. Right?

And how very dare you to stand out there on a ledge like that, I mean simplicity has always been far more preferable to complexity...FAR more rewarding. Let me put this way, you're happier, more mentally healthy if simplicity defines the day.

I agree with Brando on Johnston. He has my dearest sympathies but all comparisons to Wilson are wildly misguided. It is offensive how hipsters have coopted him for their own personal coolness--but, you know, I don't think he's without talent.

Brando: writing songs for commericals is the lowest of low but I do not think there's anything wrong with having your song featured in one so long as it is not adjusted in any fashion (see: the Of Montreal Outback commercial). Artists need money too, making money for use of your art doesn't cancel out the art if the art was created prior to the commercial and without it in mind

I agree with you for the most part, except I think that 90% of emo does suck, but so does 90% of indie. And Led Zeppelin rules, anyone who disagrees is either being willfull or hasen't seriously listened to them. Same with The Beatles. They're amazing. I'd also like to add one thing.

Tool fucking sucks.

U2, Metallica and Eminem are all very good artists.

"Stairway to Heaven" is one of the greatest songs of all time.

Green Day is usually good.

Weezer has sucked since the Blue Album.

Nevermind is better than In Utero.

Demon Days by the Gorillaz isn't that good.

Prince is better than Michael Jackson.

Well, it's not as lame as the other two ways, but it's still pretty lame. Since when did "Lust for Life", a song about heroin addiction, have anything to do with credit cards?

Radiohead has essentially put out the same record over and over since Kid A.

un·pop·u·lar
–adjective
1. not popular; disliked or ignored by the public or by persons generally.
2. in disfavor with a particular person or group of persons.

Did you mean #2? Because almost everything you said is a commonly held opinion.

U2 is an awful, awful band.

Coldplay is one of the most boring bands of all time.

I've always though Radiohead, Tool, and Nine Inch Nails were generally just OK.

Of the British Invasion, I always liked The Who and The Kinks far more than the The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Metallica, shitty metal bands like them and 99.9% or their fans should be put into camps and phased out.

Hell, 90% or more of music sucks. There's a boatload of absolutely fucking terrible music out there, it's all about wading through the crap to find the 10% that's actually exciting.

As for unpopular opinions.
Radiohead suck, and Thom Yorke's voice is like fingernails on a blackboard.

Right, there goes all my credibility in this forum... but it was worth it.

Boo. Johnny Rotten is a terrible vocalist, i dont care how great the lyrics are and the band is way too simplistic.

If you're looking for a simplistic punk band to call the greatest ever, it is far more the Ramones than the Sex Pistols.

Radiohead's best two albums are Pablo Honey and The Bends.

They are incredibly overrated because for the most part, they are incredibly boring.

They've got some good stuff - I don't hate all their work, but In Rainbows was average at best (a couple good tunes - "Reckoner" is the highlight)

I listen to loads of unpopular music,

http://last.fm/user/AndrewDB

However, I also tend to balance it out with a good heaping portion of what can be considered "popular".. Coldplay, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Green Day to some effect (more specifically their American Idiot album) etc.

I even listen to bands some people haven't even heard of .. Bishop Allen is a good example of this. They're not exactly the most popular band on the planet, but they do some great tunes.

The Zombies top all of the above.

Neil Diamond is a GOD.

I'd take Donovan over Dylan.

Syd Barrett > Pink Floyd.

Now that I think about it, of all the criticisms I've read of Nick Drake, I've never heard anyone bring his musicianship into doubt. I would still like to hear exactly why he's a bad musician for any other reason than tuning, which is a nonsensical criticism because not playing in standard tuning is usually a sign of a good musical ear.

Please, I want to hear this. Dammit, prove to me that you're right.

Yup.

I own IV by Led Zeppelin and in all honesty I cant stand it.
The Beatles are atrocious.
Creed's first 2 albums are awesome.
Chili Peppers from 1999 till now > Chili Peppers from 1995 back to 1984.
Rhapsody of Fire are amazing and one of the best bands out there (unpopular in the metal world anyways).

Most of Nirvana's fans are Nirvana fans because they believe Kurt Cobain was a martyr for his cause, and it's trendy to love a band whose lead singer committed suicide/was murdered (depending on what view you take), when the band was in its hay day.

Which.. if you humbly ask me, is a bunch of bullshit.

Granted, they have some great songs.. see Smells like Teen Spirit, and Heart Shaped Box for proof of this, but over all they're extremely over-rated. I'd rather listen to Pearl Jam any day of the week instead of Nirvana. Unless of course, it's Tori Amos' cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit. I freaking <3 that cover.

Yeah, I always thought the same. Great band and all, but I don't think Cobain was the god amongst insects he's made out to be because he killed himself.

Grohl is fucking awesome, though.

They have one song that I always enjoy listening to though.. for reasons I don't know how to explain:

Quote:
Day after day,
Alone on a hill,
The man with the foolish grin is keeping perfectly still
But nobody wants to know him,
They can see that he's just a fool,
And he never gives an answer,

But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.

Well on the way,
Head in a cloud,
The man of a 1000 voices talking perfectly loud
But nobody ever hears him,
Or the sound he appears to make,
And he never seems to notice,

But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.

And nobody seems to like him,
They can tell what he wants to do,
And he never shows his feelings,

But the fool on the hill,
Sees the sun going down,
And the eyes in his head,
See the world spinning 'round.
