Who likes The Wind That Shakes The Barley (Spoilers Inside)
If you haven't seen this movie there spoilers below, so stop reading if you care.
I finally got to see this and I must say I enjoyed it. The acting was great across the board. It helped that I didn't know anyone besides Cillian Murphy and Roger Allam. It really helped me care about the characters. Pádraic Delaney really delivered. His crying at the end before and after he gives the orders to shoot Damien owned me. I love Cillian as an actor and my favorite scene with him would be when he shoots O'Reilly. After he does it, his reaction seems so much more genuine than breaking down and crying. He just drops the gun and stumbles away. I don't know why but that hit me harder than if we had seen him break down and lose control. I also loved his character's arc from someone who didn't think he'd be of any help to someone who died for his beliefs. I thought it was a tad bit predictable but it didn't really take away from the film. What does everyone else think of this? Sorry I kind of rambled throughout. I hope my point was clear enough. |

I have seen this and I have to say...it's just one of those films that can make your head explode, it's just so good. Ken Loach's directing style is really what makes this film work so well. If you don't know much about him, he does a lot of nifty stuff, for instance, he doesn't let the actors read the whole script, so a lot of their lines and actions are improvised. That's what makes it so real--they stumble over their lines, and deliver them with such truth that makes it super believable.
The pacing is good too...a lot of people thought it was slow, but I completely disagree. It was paced really well and the suspense was spread out nicely. There are a couple good shoot out scenes here and there between some great political discussions. There are some scenes in this film that I can just watch over and over again...I love the scenes with Cillian Murphy in prison...they are just so good, the acting is just fantastic. Oh yeah and how about that ending...sure it's a tad predictable, but I don't find it corny or anything. I bawl every time (I'm a girl though, so that's not too much of an awkward thing). All of Ken Loach's films are just insanely believable...I always forget I'm watching a movie. |

The best film Loach has made in a very long time. It's all around great cinema. It was a very deserving winner of the Golden Palm.
