reeker - 7/10 franks

review of reeker

7/10 franks

***MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

~~yes, this review IS different from the slashers one ~~

(non-horror digression: since my last review, i’ve seen a few other things of note. "death note" is still kickin' ass and takin' names. i'm in the middle of vol. 4 and i'm loving it. the only downside is misa's inane desperation for light to be her boyfriend - it rubs my inner feminist the wrong way [dirty!]. i also watched brother's keeper, which was sadly underwhelming.)

good news - today i had time to re-watch 2 faves that i own.
bad news - i had the time because i was home sick. so please excuse me if this review isn't up to my usual (high?) standards, but i'm all jacked up on cold meds.

i really, really like reeker. i wade through dozens and dozens of shitty horror movies to find little diamonds in the rough like this one. it's no classic, but it's solid. it takes a standard genre plot (intro to characters, creepy unexplainable shit happens, OMGTHEYWEREDEADTHEWHOLETIME!) and executes it competently and entertainingly, and throws in a few original curve balls along the way.

props to the acting - everyone was solid. tina illman was a strong semi-final girl. devon gummersall always has a "my so-called life"-sized spot in my heart and he was great. always nice to see michael ironside. and i have a strange afffinity for derek richardson; i always tend to like him, and this is no exception. and hey eric mabius!

props to the effects - nice and gory, and pretty much everything (with the exception of the though-the-window neck injury) looked real (sorry, saw the seams on that one). i really like reekers weird and deadly little machines too - very gross.

ok, so i'm getting hot and cold flushes and sneezing all over my keyboard - that's enough for now!

oh, and i'm really looking forward to the upcoming sequel/prequel. bring it on!

so, thems mah 2 cents - feedback is welcome!

next 3 horror items on my netflix queue:
- 2ldk (supposedly horror...we'll see)
- one missed call (japanese miike original)
- eyes without a face

PS: i'd like to be able to use "half franks" in my ratings - can anyone make a half frank for me, pwetty pweeze?
