"Blair Witch Project 3"

"Blair Witch Project 3" is a Direct Sequel?

It has been ten years since "The Blair Witch Project" surprised everyone by earning $250 million in theaters on a $60,000 budget. Since then, filmmakers Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez have been planning to do something with the franchise in a form of a prequel or a sequel, but never made a decision on what exactly they wanted to do.

They now tell BBC News that they are leaning toward a direct sequel to the first installment. "We've thought about doing a film that takes place in the late 1700s and looks like a [Stanley] Kubrick movie with gritty looking people and lighting," said Myrick. "But now, we're thinking about going back and seeing what happened directly after the first film finished."

He continued: "I think it will have some kind of video element in it, but it won't be a first person hand-held movie." Myrick went on to say that he still keeps in touch with two of the three actors from the first film, but it is unlikely that they will return for this third installment.

I was not a fan of the first one, but did like the second one. I do believe this is a theater movie, and loses its appeal on watching it at home, which I did, similar to Cloverfield.

I would be curious to see where they would go with the story, but it would have to be really good for me to see it.

The first was good, but the second sucked. I wouldn't mind if they had either some friends that went looking for them or a group of campers. I hope it doesn't look cheap and like a straight to dvd film. I hate looking at crap like that.

I'm a huge fan of the first, the second is campy fun on occasion (directed by the same team behind Paradise Lost no less), i'd actually be open for another if they original team were involved. I remember the rumors of a prequel years ago.

the first flick is still the creepiest flick i have ever seen in my life.. and i doubt the level of creepiness surrounding it will ever be matched!

i look forward to a direct sequel to the story... and even the set in the 1700's prequel they have wanted to do forever.

The second film is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

With that said, I could roll for a third-- it's better than a remake.

The first one is exceptionally scary and one of my favorite films ever. The second one was intolerably stupid. I couldn't finish watching it.

Listen, I'm always up for another entry into this series, especially if the creators are returning. With that said, everything that made the first movie work had to do with the way it was shot, the low-budget approach, the fact that everything facing the characters is kept off-screen and shrouded in mystery. I don't think a period piece would work well. The idea of making a movie about the events right after the first film sounds better to me, but even that has a potential for failure.

Still, I'll see it. We need good hoorr films, America has been lacking in that genre lately.

I agree. The horror movies are not as good nowadays as they use to be.Every1 just thinks alot of blood and gore makes a movie scary. What about suspense and being surprised.what ever happened to jumping in yur seat cuz something scared u...nowadays u just cringe at the gore and thats it.

This film can be ok ....maybe....but they should ignore the second. They need to use the same tactics as the 1st...maybe a lil more of a budget...a little tiny bit more....maybe it cn be about some cops that go out looking for the ppl from the 1st film...and they get stuck there 2.

I wanted them to pick up where they left off since i saw the first one .

The second film was a satire of the hype surrounding the original , a miscalculated effort to poke fun at the mania it inspired .

On it's own , it was an excellent horror film , as a sequel it failed on every level .

I imagined the sequel as another group going in to find out what happened , shot in the same realistic style . They would be better prepared obviously , night vision goggles , maybe some weapons , plenty of food rations . There were so many avenues they could have exploited . The thing that gets me is that , it could have ended in Rustin Parr's house once again , but that building has since been demolished .

I'm sure the whole YT , FB , MS thing will be utilized in the sequel ( they are a reality that can't be ignored in a film such as this , although they don't have to refer to them by name unless they want to raise some cash ). Internet everywhere is another angle that can be implemented in the story , it's much more difficult to get lost now with advances in technology ( don't go the cheap route and have all these devices not work for dubious reasons ).

You could have an unknown presence lead them astray by manipulating their gadgets since people rely on them so much now . You are here , you want to get there ( as they consult something akin to google maps ), when they get there , someone's finger is hanging from a tree branch .

Now , the main reason this could work , and it's almost impossible to do , is if they somehow recruit actors the way they did in the original . Don't tell them what the film is , or that it has any relation to the Blair Witch . Most people now , especially their target audience are internet savvy , it will be difficult to dupe another group of actors for this film .

They will have to film this the same way they did the original , by hiring some clueless thespians and leaving them in the woods , while they terrorize them every night . They could send them ominous messages via email or FB or YT ( i envision some of the footage that they tape can be posted on a vid sharing site as a viral marketing campaign during production ) . The participants will have to be left in the dark though . Just tell them they are part of some new reality show ( maybe not because then they may start preening for the cam ).

Now , i don't know what the directors look like now , but in order to fool whoever they hire , they should take a hands off approach ( at least in an eye contact sense ) and never show themselves to the cast until the film is completed .I would say , anyone who was part of any extras on the dvd or that was seen in either dvd versions of the BW or Curse of the Blair Witch should not show themselves until principal photo is completed , it may tip someone off .

This could work , but the challenges inherent with an effective sequel in relation to the passing of 10 years and advanced tech , in addition to a more connected and knowledgeable world presents all new challenges for the success of a sequel .

If done right , the sequel could fool and scare a whole new generation and immensely satisfy an older one who embraced the first . I'll do my part , if they go the really missing route , if anyone asks , i'll play along

I'm going to a screening tonight for the 10 year anniversary of the Blair Witch Project. They're going to show the Sundance print and have the directors there for an interview, so I might be able to hear more about a possible 3rd part. I'll let you know how it goes if anything interesting comes up.
