HBO is building a "Boardwalk Empire" with a series order for the Martin Scorsese-directed pilot.



The premium cable network has picked up 11 episodes of the period drama, bringing the total order to 12 hours, including the pilot.

Production on the series is slated to begin this fall for a 2010 premiere.

Written by Terence Winter (The Sopranos), Empire is set in 1920 at the dawn of Prohibition and chronicles the life and times of Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), the undisputed ruler of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster. Empire is also a look at the history of Atlantic City's boardwalk; from its origins as a quiet seaside resort to the casino empire it is today. Based on the book "Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City" by Nelson Johnson.

Alongside Buscemi, others in the cast include Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as Buscemi's G-man nemesis, Michael Pitt as his second-in-command, Emmy winner Kelly MacDonald (Trainspotting) as his love interest, and Stephen Graham (Public Enemies) as Al Capone.

Scorsese and Winter are executive producing the series with Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Tim Van Patten. Scorsese is expected to continue to be creatively involved and may direct another episode of Empire, subject to his availability.

In addition, the cast of the pilot also included Michael K. Williams (Omar from The Wire), Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man), Paz de la Huerta (The Limits Of The Control) and Dabney Coleman (Domino, Tootsie.

HBO has been beefing up its slate of original series over the past nine months with orders to new comedies Hung, Bored to Death, How to Make It in America and a drama from the creator of The Wire called Treme.

It's cool that Scorsese is doing a tv series. Even cooler that it takes place in Atlantic City which is about a 90 minute drive from where I live. I hope they are filming there.

after the end of the wire and sopranos, aside from lost i aint been following no yank tv drama as nothing really caught my interest. this and treme i will certainly be downloading as it airs on your turf

This looks fuckin' ace. As if someone somewhere with impecible taste was dreaming that one of the best directors should get together with the ballsiest TV network, get one of the best character actors out there and do a show about fucking gangsters. Doesn't really get better than this.

Something exciting to look forward to for the fall Now i have to go and see what this Treme fuss is about .

HBO is officially back. After The Wire ended, not to mention Six Feet Under and The Sopranos I kinda felt they were entering a bit of a dry season. But now, they are officially back. And this looks fucking INCREDIBLE. The visual style evokes the best and most stylish Scorsese films. The show looks to be absolutely epic in its scope. And the cast! What a cast! Steve Buscemi, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amy Macdonald, Michael Pitt, Michael K. Williams, MICHAEL SHANNON! So awesome. And with a legion of directors who are all Six Feet and Sopranos alumni, not to mention the master himself at the helm... this is going to be quite a spectacle.

Holy shit. I am so excited for this show, it's not even funny. Between this and Treme, it really seems like HBO are back on track after The Wire/Sopranos/Six Feet Under got cancelled.

Looks great. It reminds me and looks like another HBO Show, Deadwood. You know, gambling and corruption in town.

God I miss Deadwood. Great show. Too bad we didn't get more seasons. Would have been nice to get one more to get an ending. One of HBO's best shows.
