80's Music Appreciation Thread

I'm not surprised that no one else has started one of these threads on here. But I'm glad to be the instigator.

Please no 80's haters as this is an appreciation thread.

So what songs really take you back to the 80's and put you there? Have your favorites from that decade changed or stayed the same? Try to post the more obscure works and give us some awesome blasts from the past!

Here's goes a great groove to start things off(wait for it):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIsMe...64C08528E6C77A

Remember this 80's FM smash from Australian band Real Life?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6zBj...64C08528E6C77A

Or how about this covered to death Matthew Wilder song from 1983:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0ms6...64C08528E6C77A

Contrary to belief, Nena was NOT a one hit wonder; at least not in Germany. I like this song better than 99 Luftballoons:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jQOT...64C08528E6C77A

How about this gem from Better Off Dead:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4ag3...64C08528E6C77A

Another Australian masterpiece:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-mQy...64C08528E6C77A

Here's a pretty forgotten love song from the 80's:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNeyF...64C08528E6C77A

Another great 80's groove:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyZgE...64C08528E6C77A

Remember when Ministry were New Wave?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sET1l...64C08528E6C77A

And rounding it out for now is this great Alice Cooper homage to Jason Voorhees:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbT8n...64C08528E6C77A

More to come later...........
Please add your own.

I completely love you for starting this thread. Seriously.

I listen to Real Life's "Send Me An Angel" almost every day, hahaha. I just love the moody dance songs. You seriously posted some awesome songs that not many people remember. I'm impressed! "Like To Get To Know You Well" - Hell yes! I have so many 80's movie soundtracks. It's sad that soundtracks aren't what they used to be, huh?

I also love:

Yaz (or Yazoo) - "Situation"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPiMbg4yVWk

Tears For Fears - "Mad World"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZRib_aAQFQ

Berlin - "No More Words"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MSYzT_LuZ8

Scandal - "Goodbye To You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9no2JbeFPjo

And I love you for loving it. The 80's were a constant party. If I was the age I'm at now- then, I probably would've lived a short and very happy life.

In the words of David Lee Roth, "The clothes SMILED and the music SMILED."

And in the words of Randy The Ramm(The Wrestler), "90's sucked".

Yeah. Not even close. I just love these two from The Breakfast Club:

We Are Not Alone by Karla DeVito
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5yvf9T0bdg

Wang Chung - Fire In The Twilight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keN_CW79VKE

and also The Goonies

Cyndi Lauper - Goonies R Good Enough
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTSsk...64C08528E6C77A

The Karate Kid
Bananarama - Cruel Summer("This school SUCKS man! It SUCKS!!!") lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLnX6...64C08528E6C77A

Footloose
Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f_Hs...64C08528E6C77A

Yeah we could probably go on and on with just the soundtracks!

T-Pau - "Heart and Soul"

The Fixx - "One Thing Leads To Another"

Pat Benatar - "Invincible"

E.G. Daily - "One Way Love"

Teena Marie - "Lovergirl"
Yeah, I was originally gonna throw some Patty Smyth in there and "Goodbye To You" was the song. Good call. Same thing with Teena Marie's "Lovergirl".
Early Tears For Fears is GREAT! I consider The Hurting to be an even better album than the chart topping Songs From The Big Chair. Pale Shelter is my favorite song by them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTn4o...A739E76829C43A
T'Pau's "Heart & Soul"- another good call.

I absolutely love Liz Daily, Berlin, The Fixx, and especially Pat Benatar.
Great picks!

Here is some other overlooked 80's radio fanfare:

Robert Plant - Big Log
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZQL2...A739E76829C43A

Expose - Come Go With Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGhxl...64C08528E6C77A

Rod Stewart - Young Turks[E.G. DAILY IS IN THE VIDEO!]
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSWp6...64C08528E6C77A

Belinda Carlisle - Circle In The Sand
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDcC9...64C08528E6C77A

Julian Lennon - Too Late For Goodbyes

Haha! "Holding Out For a Hero" is such an epic song. That entire soundtrack is loaded with great tunes. I used to adore Belinda Carlisle! "Heaven Is A Place on Earth" is one of those songs that really reconnects me with my childhood. Nice picks!

I love that scene.
'The Ram': "Then that Cobain pussy had to come around & ruin it all."
Cassidy: "Like theres something wrong with just wanting to have a good time?"

That cracked me up.

The 80's weren't as bad as many ppl would like to think. Not saying it was the best decade in music but since music you liked between the ages of 13-16 is gonna stick with you a lifetime , i can't diss it.

In fact , the 80s had incredible songs. These are some of my classics ( trying not to duplicate songs already named because Safety Dance would definitively be there )

Front242 - Headhunter ... first song that got me interested in EBM (industrial). After that i kinda got into Skinny Puppy , Ministry and Front Line Assembly

Corey Hart - Sunglasses at night ... Sunglasses & night = pure win

Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days ... My first dance with a girl and first kiss too ... i was 12 and scared of girls until then

Billy Idol - Rebell yell ... everything Billy Idol was awesome in the 80s

Platinum Blonde - Crying Over You ... this is a song i'm ashamed of liking nowaday. It's because back in the days , I was waiting in line to try Dragon Mountain @ Canada's Wonderland and the cute redhead behind me had the biggest breast i've ever seem and she was wearing a pink top with "platinum blonde" written on it ( she was like 20-23 , i was 13 )

Gowan - Criminal Mind ... still love this song today , wicked video back in the days

Simple Minds - Dont you forget about me ... well , it's THE song from Breakfast Club. Can't think of anyone that grew in the 80s that didn't find this film awesome =)

Soft Cell - Tainted Love ... reminds me so much of elementary school dance , it's also the first vinyl i bought

finally ... my definitive 80s song

Joan Jett & The Blackhearts - I love Rock'n'roll ... i like this song so much i could write 3 pages about it hehe.

anyone in Canada remembers Video Hits w/ Samantha Taylor on CBC ( before muchmusic ) ?

LOL! That cracked me up! Duran Duran much? What surprises me most is that this band was from Canada. They really have the British sound down!

I agree with what you said about Billy Idol. I still think he's cool. Have you seen any videos of him lately? He still has the voice.

Here are some more:

Don Henley - "Boys of Summer"

Eric Carmen - "Hungry Eyes"
(I just found out today he was the frontman for The Raspberries!)

Scorpions - "No One Like You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvsY-q8OS-8

Love and Rockets - "So Alive"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFObRusJt24

ABC - "The Look of Love"

Haircut 100 - "Love Plus One"

'Til Tuesday - "Voices Carry"

80s music is a strange era. In the 90s , i was saying it was a complete crappy decade. Early 2000's , i had totally forgot about it. Now , i can't stop checking it out because of all the memories it brings back.

At 36 , i'm pretty much a child of the 80s and i remember a lot. Sure it had really aweful things going on : spraynet , shoulder pads , fluo fashion , bad early technology , etc . But on the good side : it was bright , innovative , risk-taking and carefree.

It had a lot of one-hit wonders too ... those are my fav ( fav being a word for the ones i remember the most lol )

Information Society - What's on your mind

Dead or Alive - You spin me right round

Rockwell - Somebody's watching over me .. yes its MJ singing the back vocals!

Falco - Rock me Amadeus ... it's in german , can't figure out what the song is about but it's probably why i like Rammstein nowadays

Opus - Life is Life .. this is bad , yet i can't forget it ever existed ... someone cut my wrist plz !

Toni Basil - Mickey

Herbie Hancock - Rock it .. srsly dunno why this tune was a 1-hit wonder , don't get me wrong it's pretty good , just not mainstream ( no vocal , lotsa scratch) ... and Herbie is still doing doing music now but he's into jazz

yet for all these songs i posted , i can't deny that i switched to metal in the late 80's

Megadeth - Wake up dead

Suicidal Tendencies - How will i laugh tomorrow ... this song litterally saved my life

Queensryche - I don't believe in love ... prolly the greatest concept album ever made ! ( i still have the VHS edition from which this video is taken )

Lita Ford & Ozzy Osbourne - Close my eyes forever .... oooh sexy Lita ! my biggest wet dream ... and those jeans honestly , best duo ballad ever.

Ratt - Round & Round ... you know it's a classic when Supernatural plays you !

WASP - Fuck like a beast ... caught this one late but it defined what the RCMP was all about !

I love 80's music.

The Go-Go's were (and to an extent) still are my favorite.

Head Over Heels

Vacation

Turn to You

Get Up and Go

Yes or No

Our Lips are Sealed

I've also got such a sentimental attachment to my cassettes I can't bear to part with them even though I've got most on CD and now mp3. I still have every one that I've ever bought going back to my first tape, Hall & Oates' H2O (1982).

That's sad, I know.

Family Man - Hall and Oates
I loved this song!

What about Lust To Love?
This is probably my fav song by them(and that demo version rocks harder than The Beauty and The Beat version).

Nope. Quite respectable in my book.

I'd never heard that Demo version before. That does jam heavier than the album version.

My favorite album of theirs is Talk Show. My tape is pretty well worn and my cd of it started getting scratches. In that respect, thank God for mp3s! I've seen it on vinyl at this used place I hit up and I'm thinking about grabbing it for the hell of it, especially since nostalgia has been kicking in and my record collection has gotten larger lately.

That was my transition piece. I had been buying records but couldn't find a copy of it that didn't skip. So that last time I took H2O back to Target, I got it on cassette (having just gotten a cassette player I guess it was finally time to switch formats.)

One 80's pop song I adore that never seems to get any recognition anymore is "Tenderness" by General Public.... and I'm not sure why, it's just as catchy, accessible, and enjoyable as the prototypical 80s pop tune.

Smalltown Boy is such an anthem! Bronski Beat were actually fairly successful in the UK...they had a massive club hit with a medley that incorporated a couple of Donna Summer tunes and "Johnny Remember Me"...and they also managed to make the top 10 with "Hit That Perfect Beat" even when the brilliant Jimmy Somerville was replaced by John Foster.

Jimmy went on to form The Communards of course...he was an incredibly underrated vocalist IMO.

Some picks,

Echo & The Bunnymen - Seven Seas

Adam & The Ants - Prince Charming

Pet Shop Boys - Always On My Mind

The Human League - Love Action

Prince - Raspberry Beret

Herbie Hancock - Rockit

Yazoo - Don't Go

Talking Heads - Once In a Lifetime

Kate Bush - Cloudbusting

Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

The Smiths - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before (filmed in my locality)

Kraftwerk - Computer Love

The Cure - A Forest

The Communards - Don't Leave Me This Way

Heaven 17 - Temptation

Orange Juice - Rip It Up

The Style Council - Walls Come Tumbling Down

Sprinkle on a little bit 'o' cheese...

John Farnham - You're The Voice

Aztec Camera - Somewhere In My Heart

And finally...

Joy Division - Atmosphere (a re-release I believe, but included for obvious reasons)

Forgive me if I've made any errors here...I haven't checked up on the exact years of all these tracks but I'm pretty sure they are all 80's.

More to come...

Unless your talking about college radio and every other indie band back in the 1980s, then yes, I will be more than willing to express my appreciation, but if your speaking in terms of the popular music of the 1980s, than my praises will be few and far between.

That's the beauty of the Golden 80's. The 70's was the most creative but in the 80's there were more variables of good music to choose from than any other decade. I don't think that any grungehead or modern indie emo kid could possibly refute this. There was great pop, great hard rock and metal, great underground, and yes, great indie bands.
So please include them.

While I said in a previous thread that my fav musical artists of the 80's was The Police, right now, I'm leaning more towards Metallica;

Seriously; Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, ....And Justice for All, all released in the 80's, just rock huge even to this day. All three just rock in any sense of the word.

Agreed. And don't forget Kill Em' All. Though I agree the other albums are more progressive in nature.

I couldn't agree more. I love...no, I ADORE those albums. I'll have to throw Kill 'Em All in that list as well -- personally, I don't love Metallica's debut, but it features some killer thrash metal. I still think Metallica is an awesome band, but 80's Metallica fucking rocks.

Animotion - Obsession, I've always liked this song, but only recently figured out who did it. Probably one of the best drum beats ever, and the best keyboard riff of all time.
