Favorite Palme D'Or Winners

We've done this with the Oscar's Best Picture winners a few times, I thought it might be fun to try it with the more prestigious, international version.

1.) Taxi Driver
2.) Pulp Fiction (my two favorite movies)
3.) Apocalypse Now
4.) Paris, Texas
5.) The Leopard
6.) The Third Man
7.) If...
8.) The White Ribbon
9.) sex, lies, and videotape
10.) The Tree of Life

The Next Ten: Rome, Open City, The Tragedy of Othello, The Wages of Fear, Black Orpheus, La Dolce Vita, Viridiana, Blow-Up, The Conversation, The Tree of Wooden Clogs, The Ballad of Narayama

Their choices since 2001 have all been great films, L'Enfant could just as easily be replaced by Fahrenheit 9/11 or 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days.

For a list of all winners: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palme_d%27Or

Great topic! Can't believe this hasn't been done before.

Anyway, these would be my picks:

1. Pulp Fiction
2. Apocalypse Now
3. Taxi Driver
4. The Piano
5. Barton Fink
6. Elephant
7. Paris, Texas
8. The Pianist
9. L'Enfant
10. The Conversation

Runners up: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, sex lies and videotape, La Dolce Vita, Dancer in the Dark, Secrets & Lies, L'Enfant, Farenheit 9/11.

I really need to see more of these films.

Is there a site that lists all of the past winners?

Because I have no idea which movies have won besides the ones already mentioned here. And from those I'd say:

1. Pulp Fiction
2. Secrets & Lies
3. The Pianist
4. Apocalypse Now
5. Fahrenheit 9/11

There are a lot I want to see too, but I don't know that anyone who's seen and appreciated Mikhail Kalatozov's The Cranes Are Flying can really be called uncultured... cunt, I'll give you.

Heh, I thought it was funny that out of dozens of movies, half of us rearrange the top 3 as the 3 best. Those really are some fantastic films. All the mentions of The White Ribbon too remind me I really need to make the trek to catch that in theaters soon.

Just wanted to bring something up: I've only seen Elephant crop up on a few of the lists, and not on as many as I would think. Does nobody else think that this is just an incredible, incredible film? It's one of my all-time favorites! Well, it's hard to call it "favorite" since its not exactly an easy watch, but I definitely consider it one of the best films of the decade, and even of all time.

It's one of my all time least favourites, I hate that stupid, lazy, ignorant film.

Have you seen any movies by Bela Tarr? Gus Van Sant was inspired to make his 'trilogy' (Gerry/Elephant/Last Days and now I guess Paranoid Park) after watching Satantango. I wouldn't recommend watching Satantango first though since it's about 7.5 hours long but Werckmeister Harmonies would be a great start.

Great topic. Good list of films to go to when I need to watch something as there's loads I haven't seen. It's getting increasingly difficult for me to number, order and rank films so for this i will put what I think is the film that stands above all I've seen from the list and then the other 9 that would in some order or other make a top 10 list.

1. The Wages of Fear

Taxi Driver
Pulp Fiction
The Third Man
La Dolce Vita
The White Ribbon
The Conversation
Paris, Texas
Underground
Brief Encounter

I am aware of Bela Tarr and his influence on Van Sant although, admittedly, I have not seen any of his films yet. Werckmeister Harmonies popped up on many "best of the decade" lists which piqued my interest, and I have been meaning to see it for a while now, but haven't gotten around to it. I will also probably watch Satantango at some point as well. Thanks for recommend!

Monotreme, if you would still like an explanation on why I would disagree that Elephant is a masterpiece:

Well, to each his own. You seem pretty convinced, and at least you actually give an argument instead of the usual "That movie's CRAP!" "Why do you think so?" "It just IS!"

At least you liked Milk

What about least favorite Palme D'Or winners?

I dug Elephant a lot, but I guess we've got Natty's early choice in.

The Piano and Wild At Heart are the only winners I'd call outright bad, but I'm no fan of M*A*S*H or Union Pacific either.

The Piano? That makes me sad. I think it's one of the most absolutely incredible films ever made. But again, that's just me :P I think it's a shame you don't like it, though.

Anyway, again - I haven't seen enough Cannes films to properly answer this question, but I think the only one that I can think of that I didn't really like is The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And it's not like it's a bad film - I just didn't find it particularly engaging, especially in comparison to other films that were in competition that year (Babel, Pan's Labyrinth, Volver, Days of Glory - hell, I even enjoyed Marie Antoinette more than Barley).

I haven't seen it in years, but I remember loathing The Lost Weekend.

Also, Fahrenheit 9/11. That was a weak year, and it's not a terrible film (only a terrible documentary), but that it won over Nobody Knows and Oldboy is pretty scandalous.

Wild at Heart is easily the worst of the ones I've seen. I love David Lynch to death, but that was just a piss-poor attempt by him at making a semi-Hollywood-friendly film.

Wild at Heart is definitely an awful movie, agreed. Also not a big fan of The Mission or The Pianist (which is still a decent movie, just not great). Sad to see not too many MASH fans out there, love that movie. And I haven't watched The Piano in a really long time, maybe I should reevaluate.

No! Peeps, where's the Wild at Heart love? That movie may supposedly be a "piss-poor attempt to make a semi-Hollywood-friendly film", but have you SEEN the movie? It's anything BUT Hollywood friendly! It's an insane, off-the-walls, completely weird Lynch movie that takes what seems to be a Hollywood genre film and then turns it on its head, punches it in the face and drags it in the dust and in general just gives it the Lynch treatment! I've always said that that film is underrated...!

I was in two minds on wether to put it on there, but I just don't think it's that good of a film. It's his worst behind 'Fire Walk With Me'.

Maybe "friendly" is the wrong word, but it feels like a Hollywood road movie, even with its many Lynchian touches.
