Rate the Scream Series

After watching SCRE4M today I found myself rating the series in my head. I thought it might be better just to do it here. From best to worst (IMO).

Scream - 10/10
Scream 4 - 7.5/10
Scream 3 - 6.5/10
Scream 2 - 5.5/10

Okay, your turn...

1) SCREAM - 10/10
2) SCREAM 4 - 7/10
3) SCREAM 2 - 7/10
4) SCREAM 3 - 6/10

But even though I tied them, 4 is a distinctly higher 7/10 (bordering on 8, but I can't quite go there) than 2's 7/10. The third I still think is fun, but way watered down, and 4 only highlighted that to me with its liberal showers of refreshing red.

I recently watched the original trilogy (in reverse order for some odd reason) before viewing the new movie (I still want my fucking money back!)...and I loved Parts 2 & 3 much more than the original this time around! The killers in all four movies lack that something that even the non-iconic murderers in other slashers (think Happy Birthday To Me and Prom Night) possessed. Sympathy or empathy, maybe? Style & panache? IDK!!!

4. Scream 3 - 8/10

This is probably my favourite film franchise and certainly my favourite horror series, so I have a real soft spot for it. Hence the high ratings. I could grade 4 more harshly but originally it was 10/10, so there

I believe the first two films deserve a perfect grade, though. Not sure why everyone is so hard on Scream 2. It's nearly better than the first film.

For me they go in order:

Scream - 9/10
Scream 2 - 8/10
Scream 3 - 7/10
Scream 4 - 6/10

Each one lost a little bit from the one before. I was actually really disappointed with the fourth one. Had been looking forward to it for a while. It was probably best to just leave it at a trilogy. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

My main problem with the Scream series, is that their all pretty much products of their time. While I applaud the first one for reinventing the slasher genre, I also blame it for the wave after wave of pointless, insipid, teen horror films of the late 1990s (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, etc.) The sequels haven't aged well at all either, Scream 2, while entertaining, suffered from a complete uninspired ending, not too mention killing off likeable characters (Randy) and not killing off unlikeable characters (Dewey). Scream 3 came out during the aftermath of the Columbine Massacre, so the violence and the gore were toned down, which severly diluted the film's impact. As for the new entry, while I applaud it's "stab" at poking fun at the new recent remake craze, it's still left a disappointing taste in my mouth. So on that note, hear are my picks I suppose.

1. Scream (1996): 7.5/10
2. Scream 2 (1997) 6/10
3. Scream 3 (2000): 5/10
4. Scream 4 (2011): 5/10

You thought Dewey was unlikeable?!?!

Also, blaming Scream for all the countless copycats is like blaming Jaws for all the bad summer blockbusters that we've gotten since Jaws was the first summer blockbuster that came out. It invented the term summer blockbuster.

^ Exactly. It's not Craven, nor anyone else's fault that Scream was an enormous success and inspired multiple inferior copycats.

I thought Randy being offed in Scream 2 was a fantastic and unexpected twist. A lot of people complain about his death, but then they also complain that the two latter films in the saga aren't 'daring' enough to kill off any of the main characters. Killing Randy in 2 made the following events with major characters - the car sequence and the chase through the film school - more unpredictable as the characters felt less 'safe'.

I wouldn't have minded if Dewey was killed off in 2. I think originally that was the intention but Craven/Williamson loved the character so much that they couldn't part with him.

This is something Paralise Monster sent to me a while back, she seems to have stopped posting, but I more or less agree with what she said.

"At first I totally dug it, everything was mapped out, the plot was strong and then what is my payoff? A couple of jerks who's master plan fell apart all because they decide to act like idiots. I get two idiots? These are the brains behind everything I had just been watching? In a nutshell it just blew it for me, petered out. A lot of movies are like that, they start out great but when it is time to wrap up for an ending, problems ensue. Scream made me feel like I finally got to score with the cute popular guy but it was over after one stroke. All that anticipation just turns to shit. It just really rubbed me the wrong way and it still does."

none of them really bare rating for me.

Scream - 8/10
Scream 2 - 7.5/10
Scream 3 - 5.5/10
Scream 4- 3.5/10

They obviously declined big time for me. But I also realize in retrospect the whole 'product of its time' thing is true. When the first two came out I was younger and not the same movie fan, it hit me big time. If I were never to have watched them up until now I probably wouldn't think much of them.

I dig the whole series.

Scream 9/10
Scream 2 7/10
Scream 3 7.5/10
Scream 4 7/10

Scream 3, imo is much better then people give it credit for. As whole I feel it is more focused then 2 and the twist, while a bit of stretch, is more satisfying then the twist in 2. I also don't think the violence in 3 is toned down all that much from 2. I remember 2 being pretty dry compared to the first one as well. 4 thankfully brought back the violence from the first one.

Scream is a classic. I will never get tired of watching that, no matter the time of year. The second one never really did it for me. The third one had a cool twist and the imagery of Sid's dead mother I thought was terrifying. The most recent one was just fun.

The only Scream film I can say I did not like was 2. Going back and trying to re-watch it now is extremely hard. The killers were not done well this time around. The story felt more like it was done so for a sequel.

A lot of hate is coming out for 4, but then people re-watch it and seem to like it more the second time around. This happened for me. I went back and saw little clues I missed the first time, and it was a much better experience. The ending makes me wish that they would just kill off a main character already.

With 3 I have mixed feelings. You can tell it was a different writer, first off. The characters could have been more likable. I did like the whole Hollywood scenario.

Then Scream 1 is just fantastic. I re-watched it recently and it still holds up well. While watching Scream 4 over again, it was very much a remake of Scream, but with little changes, example the killers, which I thought was done very well.

I would rate them like this:
Scream 10/10 - Fantastic film
Scream 2 5/10 - Some good things, but too many bad things for me
Scream 3 6/10 - Loved the setting, execution was off
Scream 4 8/10 - Solid comeback, some minor issues
