The Happening: there, I said it! The film was pure cheezy entertainment and there were a few moments where I was laughing so hard I nearly cried. So hang me from a tree, burn me at a stake, call me a herotic, whatever you please, but I'm sticking to it.

I didn't realize how good and just how many horror movies i've seen this past decade . No order , just ones that i genuinely enjoyed and made these past 10 years or so a sort of modern day Golden Age :
DOTD 04 Res Evil 1-3 Shaun of the Dead Hot Fuzz ( definitely horror , it has strong slasher elements and copious amounts of gore ) Dead End ( a hidden gem for sure ) Brotherhood of the Wolf Silent Hill Slither Friday the 13th Quarantine REC Wishing Stairs Uzumaki Kairo Dog Soldiers Severance 28 days later 28 weeks later Land of the Dead Diary of the Dead Zombie Diaries Descent Scarecrow ( yep , i liked it ![]() Texas Chainsaw Massacre Book of Shadows ( once you get over the fact it's only a sequel in spirit , it's a great film ) Ring remake Ring 2 ( it expanded on the mythos to excellent effect ) Dark Water original Juon 1 and 2( the ones shot on video . Think those were 99 but i'll put them on this list ) Phone ( excellent Korean film ) Tale of two Sisters original Haute Tension Evil Aliens ( must see goromedy in the spirit of Bad Taste ) The Others My little Eye ( highly recommend this low budget creepfest ) The Ruins Cloverfield ( just may be the best big monster run amok film ever made ) The Mist The Eye original Planet Terror The Card Player Nonhossono ( may have spelled it wrong , but it's aka Sleepless ) La Terza Madre My Bloody Valentine The Happening ( way better than people are giving it credit for ) I am Legend Wild Zero |

Wow LordSimen, even at 100, I never thought I'd see Last House In The Woods on any "best of" list.
And I agree, this has been a great decade for horror, and I'd thank a little indie horror flick for the resurgence back in '99. ![]() I can't be nackered to come up with all of them, but this is a bunch I can pull off the top of my head, and I know I'll read this in a week and go "SHIT! How could I forget..." [REC] - 9/10 Dawn of the Dead - 8.5/10 Wrong Turn - 8/10 Texas Chainsaw Massacre - 8/10 A Tale Of Two Sisters - 9/10 Wolf Creek - 9/10 Dog Soldiers - 9/10 The Descent - 8.5/10 Hostel - 8/10 Hatchet - 8/10 Final Destination Series - 9-8-8.5/10 (with one more to come) Splinter - 8/10 The Ruins - 8/10 Cloverfield - 8.5/10 (even tho I don't consider it a horror... wtf) Quarantine - 8/10 Zombie Diaries - 8/10 Pontypool - 8/10 The Signal - 8.5/10 Dead Sno (Dod Sno) - 8/10 Deadgirl - 8.5/10 Outpost - 8/10 Let The Right One In - 9/10 Hell, I'll stop there, cause I could type forever, and still miss a bunch. I know there are still a TON of Asian horror flicks I left off. Let me add the inverse as well. Some of the worst: Martyrs - 3/10 The Mist - 3/10 The Happening - 4/10 The Uninvited - 5/10 Surveillance - 4/10 Saw 4 - 3/10 Boogeyman - 3/10 Inside (L Interieur) - 5/10 Last House In The Woods - 4/10 Haute Tension - 2/10 House of 1000 Corpses - 3/10 Dretch! |

1.American Psycho- 90/100
Either the most satiric horror film or the darkest comedy ever made, American Psycho is in a class all its own. Christian Bale's performance as the psychotic playboy with a mask of conformity is absolutely incredible. He's demented, hilarious, frightening, and powerful. The script is razorsharp and almost as grizzly as the novel. A must see. 2.Donnie Darko- 90/100 How can a straight to video film contain such a stellar cast? The entire cast is spot on in their performances and Richard Kelly's dark vision of a tormented teenage hero is absolutely breath taking. Modern day classic. 3.Grindhouse- 89/100 Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's stab at the b-horror films of the '70s and '80s is absolutely fantastic for any fan of film. The sights and sounds are so reminiscent to that of the genre they set out to embody, its almost criminal that the two haven't returned to the horror genre since. And despite what you may have heard, the shock scares and over the top gore of Planet Terror is no match for the edge of your seat suspense in Death Proof. 4.Silent Hill- 87/100 Best. Video. Game. Movie. Ever. Christophe Gans creates such a twisted hell in Silent Hill that it almost embarasses the video game its based upon. The story is as dark and twisted as anything I've ever seen and may be the best straight forward horror film of the decade. But don't come in expecting Resident Evil, because you'll get something much deeper and haunting than you'd ever find in a Paul Anderson film. 5.Antichrist- 86/100 Far and away the most disturbing film of the decade, and possibly EVER. Charolette Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe deliver power house performances in an unnerving hell of built up tension between the two over the loss of their infant son. Don't let the cynics scare you off, this is much more than just a grusome display of shock effects, this is a deeply haunting and dark film. 6.Bubba Hotep- 86/100 Another genre bender, Bubba Hotep is absolute undefinable greatness. Bruce Campbell cranks out his best performance since "Army", and Don Coscarelli delivers a film thats neck and neck with Phantasm for his best. Hilarious, thought provoking, and eerie. 7.Cabin Fever- 86/100 To me, this is Eli Roth establishing a name for himself in the horror industry. Balls out grusomeness, creepy atmosphere, unsettling characters, and off the wall hilarity. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I cant help but absolutely love this film. 8.The Devil's Rejects- 84/100 For most, Rob Zombie's a pretty hit or miss filmmaker. And while his writing abilities are questionable, his love for the genre and originality behind the lense are unquestionable. Devil's Rejects is where he's at his best. 9.Frailty- 83/100 Bill Paxton's directorial debut is nothing like I'd expected it to be. Part growing up drama, part Se7en; Frailty is a brutally bleak look at religion with plot twists around every corner. 10.The Road- 82/100 Viggo Mortenson's performance is enough for anyone to love this film, but if that isn't enough take a look at the gorgeous atmosphere created in this film. The scariest part of the film is that its the most plausible scenario on this list. 11.Hostel Part 2- 82/100 12.Hostel- 82/100 Most people despise this series claiming it to be "torture porn" but to me Hostel is Saw's smarter, less popular older sister. The film has a much bigger message than the Saw serries and has much more relevance into today's political climate. Everything works so well, too bad it felt he held back on some of the creative stylistic touches he threw into Cabin Fever... 13.Shaun of the Dead- 82/100 You wouldn't expect one of the best zombie films of the decade to be a British romantic comedy as well, but such is the case with Simon Pegg's breakout film. The leading duo are hilarious together and the script puts a smart and hilarious twist on the zombie genre. 14.Joy Ride- 82/100 This may be another guilty pleasure for me, but I found this film to be really creepy. The whole aspect of the Trucker's revenge seemed a bit unlikely at times, but still fun and still scary as fuck. 15.Final Destination- 82/100 Despite the terrible sequels (okay, the second one was pretty decent), the first Final Destination is quite the horror film. With mostly unknowns in the cast, its fairly hard to perceive who's next on death's chopping block and just how merciful their fate will be. In most cases, not whatsoever. 16.Rob Zombie's Halloween- 81/100 Another one I'm probably in the majority about, in my opinion Rob Zombie's Halloween is the best remake since John Carpenter's The Thing. Zombie's gritty vision of young Michael growing up in an insane asylum butchering animals and beating bullys to a pulp was an incredible addition to the Halloween folklore in my opinion. Its where the remake actually starts about halfway through the film that it begins to lose its luster. Don't even get me started on the sequel... 17.Drag Me to Hell- 81/100 Sam Raimi's return to horror is a welcome one, it just isn't quite as successful as you may have been lead onto beleive. While the entire premise is very inriguing, some of the slapstick comedy gets to be a bit much at times. And the twist is so obvious my 6 year old sister pointed it out to me 30 minutes before the ending came. 18.Signs- 81/100 For the most part, Shamylan has been pretty downhill this millenium. But Signs was definitley one of his better efforts. Gibson gives a great performance and the script is very well written, even if it is a bit odd that extra terrerstrials with a sensitivity to water came to a planet made almost entirely up of the substance. 19.Club Dread- 81/100 One of the most underappriciated genre films of the decade, Broken Lizard's Club Dread is everything Scary Movie tried to be and more. It's actually a decent horror film, with some really inventive shots and true moments in terror. Turn off your brain and let the blood fly. 20.28 Weeks Later- 80/100 The far superior sequel is jam packed with scares, gore, and a fantastic story about the youngest people alive. Faster and more furious than its sequel, 28 weeks turns a mediocre concept into a brilliant serries. Last edited by Kevin Smith fan; 01-17-2011 at 04:40 PM.. |

10. American Pyscho
There are a couple of movies on this list that I don't really consider as horror, but I put 'em on here cuz either they're using a subject that is usually centered in horrors flix, or just because I wanna have a list that comes out to an even ten, and these certain films come close enough. AP is a good example of this. 9. The Devil's Rejects A family of rednecks that makes even Satan go "Damn.... these people are just plain downright evil.....!" ![]() 8. The Mist This was a really good movie up until the end. INO, it felt too forced. And I know that it's the same ending as in the book, but onscreen, it didn't worked as well I thought it could. Still, overall, the film was good was enough to make it my list. 7. Ginger Snaps There comes a time in every young girl's life when her body starts to give off signs that she's becoming a woman. Or a werewolf. ![]() 6. Shaun Of The Dead I knew that this was gonna be my kind of zombie movie when in one early scene, the main character, Shaun (duh!) said that he still liked Second Coming, the much under-appreciated 2nd. album by the Stone Roses. After that part, my hairy pimp-ass just sat back into my easy-chair, relaxed, & enjoyed all the thrills, chills & gags. ![]() 5. Planet Terror While the shlock that comes with most zombie flicks usually puts me off, Robert Rodriguez's style of depicting his half of The Grindhouse as a caricature of a genre that has already gone cartoonishly over the top, makes this a walking undead gore-a-rama that I could not only stomach, but enjoy as well. Coupled with a modern sense of violence that we've all mindlessly grown to love, it's a zombie action flick of an energetic quality that sparked some life into my usually dead reaction to most shambling corpse fare. So, if you're into chicks with guns, zombie apocalypeses & amputees (& let's be honest.... who isn't?), then this is the zombie flick for you. ![]() 4. Cloverfield This movie gets an extra point just for the surprise factor of how much I ended up enjoying it. I really didn't expect to like this as much as I did. I saw this flick with my brother-in-law, & remember that when the lights in the theatre came on, we both looked at each with an expression of "Whoa" on our faces. As an adult, one of my absolute favorite things about going to the movies is when I see a film that brings back those feelings that I used to experience as a kid whenever I saw something that was too fantastic that it was beyond the realm of our realty & yet watch it come to life on the big screen in front of me. A giant alien monster rangin' thru the streets of the Big Apple is a pretty good f'rinstance. ![]() 3. 28 Days Later Y'know, the concept of zombies has gotten bogged down with the campiness that has overtaken this horror sub-genre over the years, that the horror aspect seems to have been practically filtered out. And though alot of this may be due to the logistic of being able to easily escape these stumbling monstrocities, the fact is, if anyone reading this actually saw a zombie, they'd still be scared to the point of shittin' out their own skeletons. If at least by the idea that they have born witness to something as "death-defying" as an entity of the "undead". This movie attempts to address these issues by respectfully replacing the idea of rising from the dead more akin to being infected with a rabid mind-devolving plague. And IMO, that's enough to turn the concept of a zombie into a more reality like creature that's pretty damn scary. Especially when added to the fact that they can now move fast enough to actually catch you. ![]() 2. Let The Right One In Good horror movies come so rarely into my life. The same with good vampire movies. And the same also goes for good love stories (I refrain from using the term "romance movies" since I find Hollywood's idea of romance is always so impossibly & ridiculously fairy-tale-like). This movie is 2 outta 3 (Though there is some, it's very light on the horror). Told more in an adult manner, yet still with enough of an escapist sensibilty that is respective to the genre, this is a soft, beautiful & beguiling story (which is really saying something since I don't know what that word means) of two 12 year olds finding love for the first time thru the flaws of each of their separate (& sometimes desperate) life situations. The lead actors for this movie portray their characters with a true down to earth awkwardness that is usually found with kids at this age, along with a longing that is both sincere & convincing. As far as vampire love stories go, I find myself agreeing with those who compare this one with another human-falls-for-bloodfeeder film that was released around the same time: the 15 year old girls can have their Twilight. I'll take LTROI. ![]() 1. [REC] Take what Cloverfield took from The Blair Witch Project, add a dash of 28 Days Later, and then sprinkle on some sub-titles (at least, in my case), & there you go. A quality zombie flick of which I rarely get to see without a giant glob of gooey camp splattered all over it. ![]() |

Not really sure if I can think of a top 10 list for the decade...there have been some good horror flicks out there but I still haven't seen many of the ones that are getting a lot of praise....and as everyone knows that it is a scientific fact that horror films achieved perfection in the 1970s and 1980s. That's why there's so many remakes these days.
Instead I will just choose one. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon It's clear that the makers of this movie are true horror/slasher fans and they put a lot of effort into their satire. I have never seen horror deconstructed the way it is here. You always wonder, maybe in the back of your head, what exactly does a dude like Jason Voorhees do in his off-time? How does he choose the people to kill in seemingly the perfect order? Etc. This film provides the answer to these kinds of questions. It's funny, it's intriguing, and yeah, it even has good kills and some T&A. There are only 3 things that keep it from being a MASTERPIECE: 1. The killer's design. They really could have worked harder on making something a little more memorable than overalls and a goofy mask. Luckily he's unmasked so much that it's almost not an issue. 2. The ending could have been a bit better. It seemed to just go on auto-pilot in the final scenes. 3. Not enough Robert Englund. Other than that, I loved the movie. Best of the decade. |

Ju-On (2002) Just in time for Halloween, i've been wrapping my head around the best horror films of the past decade (2000-2009). I know off the bat many won't agree with my number 1 pick (some might not even consider it as a horror movie) but tell me what the difference is in the basic outline between Elephant and All the Boys Love Many Lane? Well, despite one being fucking amazing and the other being mediocre as hell, the only difference is marketing. One is marketed as a horror film, the other is marketed as an art house romp. Though Elephant actually horrifies, stimulates and provokes, while most every horror film post-Scream, like All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, is made as an overly-meta, self conscience take on the genre which I think suffocates most of the terror and tension. |
