Sequels that were better than the Original

Not just sequels as in the next chapter, but maybe the 3rd/4th etc that outdid the original in your opinion.

My top ten:

1. X2
2. Aliens
3. Wes Craven's New Nightmare
4. Terminator 2
5. Ip Man 2
6. The Dark Knight
7. Return of the Jedi
8. Halloween H20
9. Blade 2
10. Final Destination 2

And sequels that completely sucked ass:

Godfather Part 3
Nightmare on Elm Street 3/4/5/6
Grease 2
Halloween 2 (both versions)

Aliens
Godfather Part II
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3,4 and New Nightmare
Basically almost every single Star Trek sequel is better than the original except for Generations, which is the weakest IMO
The Dark Knight
Terminator 2
Halloween II ('81), IV and H20
Final Destination 2
Shanghai Knights
Rush Hour 3

Do we have to include the sequels to the original or can I include prequels like X-Men: First Class or movies that are sequels to sequels like Fast Five? 'Cuz if I can, then:

X2
Toy Story 2
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
X-Men: First Class
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The Dark Knight
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
(compared to the other prequel films, not the original trilogy which is obviously far superior)
Tron: Legacy
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Final Destination 5

Fast Five

T2
Aliens (Depending on my mood)
Empire Strikes Back
Dawn of the Dead 1978 (Depending on my mood)
Godfather part 2
The Road Warrior
Spider-Man 2
X2
The Dark Knight
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
The Chronicles of Riddick (Both are pretty underrated imo)
Blade 2

I enjoy all the Toy Stories, LOTR's equally.

[Sigh] Again, these 2 films and "A Fistful of Dollars" are 3 totally unrelated films both character- and story-wise. The fact that Clint Eastwood's characters in each one all have a similar appearance to one another is pure coincidence. The whole 'Man with No Name' slant was purely a marketing ploy devised by United Artists in order to sell them in the U.S. So can we please stop referring to these as a trilogy?

Rush Hour 2
Home Alone 2
Blade 2
The Rescuers Down Under

Don't really consider LOTR as sequels since it's really just a 10 hour movie.

Yes, you both should check out the Death Wish series. Charles Bronson is awesome and Paul Kersey is a cool character.

Wow. Don't know how I forgot about Evil Dead 2, of course. Army Of Darkness, too. I enjoyed the horror tone of the original, but both sequels are more entertaining than the first one.

The answer to this question, forever and always, is The Road Warrior.

Aliens is an SF/Action film. Alien is an SF/Suspense film. They're equally great.

The road warrior definitely.

T2 sucks compared to T1. T1 was much more entertaining.
Aliens sucks compared to Alien. Alien was much scarier.
Empire sucks compared to A New Hope. Empire is cheese. Kershner sucks.

It's actually Children Of The Corn II, but just barely. I thought the possession scene was pretty cool.

There actually aren't very many sequels I think are better than the original.

I agree with The Road Warrior.

I feel I must chime in here and protest.

Why and how can everyone list Aliens and T2 as better than the originals? Not to derail this thread but lets do a quick analysis.

Aliens vs Alien...Aliens had superior special effects and the marine squad was indeed cool however Cameron failed to capture that sense of impending doom and fear that Ridley did. Ridleys flick was very scary and suspenseful, Camerons was just a straight action movie. Also, IMO, Newt is one of the most annoying child characters ever. And I don't think it is because she is annoying per say but I didn't want her in my Alien flick. Aliens is close but the original takes it by a nose.

The Terminator vs T2...Again, T2 blows its predecessor away in terms of special effects but in every other aspect the original is better. The original Terminator is far more sinister than the T-1000 and the relentlessness he had took the movie to another level. The whole back story stuff was far to bloated. I understand Cameron wanting to do it and all, but the entire middle of T2 put me to sleep. The original never stopped, never let up. And finally, Ed Furlong was terrible and the cheesiness/camp with Arnold made me throw up in my mouth. Terminator is twice the movie T2 is.

I've often gone back and forth on T1 and T2 as to which is the better movie. As of now, I'm going with T1, but both of these movies are so good, its a virtual tie.

As for Alien/Aliens - I think Alien is a good movie; an artistic and technical triumph that suffers from a slow first half. Aliens is far and away the better movie on all fronts. The cast, the creatures, the production design - all top notch and inserted seamlessly into a wholly realized universe without any effort or anything appearing out of place.

The sheer fact that so many people have been clamoring for two decades for a movie to return to the world of the Colonial Marines speaks volumes for how perfect this movie is.

Alien: 7/10
Aliens: 10/10

The first Terminator is definitely better than the sequel, imo.

I think both Alien movies are about equal for me.

We disagree. I enjoyed the set up in Alien. I like the characters far more in Alien than Aliens. They seemed far more "real" to me. The marines in Aliens were over the top cliches for the most part. They even went with the "officer in command who has never seen a real battle" with Gorman. I mean come on, how many times has that card been played?

To me personally, Ridley created a far more immersive world than Cameron did. To me the characters in Alien were far more realistic where Aliens they seemed like cardboard cutouts. Plus the atmosphere, the tension, the sense of impending dread was more palpable in Alien. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time chewing my nails not knowing who would die next. Aliens I knew they were all toast except Ripley and the stupid little kid.

In the end, Alien pulled me in by the throat and ripped my larynx out. Conversely, I felt like a mere spectator in Camerons world. Aliens is a great action flick, far superior in special effects, but misses on everything else. To me, the measure of a truly great film is when one doesn't think of anything else during the entire run time. You are completely absorbed in the story, suspension of disbelief comes effortlessly. Very few films do it. Alien did for me and Aliens did not. JMTC
